Real Madrid enjoyed the perfect preparation for Paris Saint-Germain by thrashing Real Sociedad 4-1 on Saturday to move eight points clear at the top of La Liga.

Madrid had to come from behind at the Santiago Bernabeu as two scintillating long-range strikes from Eduardo Camavinga and Luka Modric turned the game on its head, before a Karim Benzema penalty and a tap-in for Marco Asensio completed am emphatic victory, AFP said.

Camavinga's strike, his second goal for Madrid, was timely given the 19-year-old may have to start against PSG on Wednesday, with Toni Kroos, absent here, struggling with a hamstring strain.

"Camavinga is definitely an option," said Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti.

Madrid are tasked with overturning a 1-0 deficit from the first leg in Paris if they are to reach the quarter-finals.

At the end of the game and with the stadium mostly empty, Madrid's players came back out onto the pitch to salute the ultras behind the goal.

"The thanks to the fans was an idea that came from the players," said Ancelotti. "After this game they believe more in what we can do on Wednesday."

Everything seems easier with the 36-year-old Modric, whose own wonder-goal was the highlight of another mesmeric display, for which he earned a standing ovation from the home crowd in the second half.

Kylian Mbappe, Lionel Messi and Neymar will provide a sterner test for Madrid's back four in midweek but this was a particularly encouraging performance from Ancelotti's attack, which was far more dynamic after struggling for goals in recent weeks.

Benzema looks sharp again after recovering from his own hamstring injury last month. Benzema has three goals in his last three games, and had two disallowed against La Real before finally scoring from the spot.

Victory extends Madrid's advantage at the top of La Liga after second-placed Sevilla were held to a goalless draw by Alaves on Friday night.

Real Sociedad could have gone third with a win but they stay sixth, with qualification for the Europa League looking more realistic now than the Champions League.

Real Madrid started sloppily and paid for it after David Silva's touch and shift was too quick for Dani Carvajal, who caught the midfielder's trailing right foot.

- Impressive Modric -Thibaut Courtois dived the right way but Mikel Oyarzabal's penalty had too much power and whip, the ball nestling into the bottom right-hand corner.

It took until the 29th minute for Madrid to register a shot on goal and the crowd were getting agitated when Camavinga's rocket released the tension. Modric flicked the ball in-field to the midfielder, who controlled and unleashed a shot from 30 yards that sizzled straight, hard and into the net.

The floodgates opened, with Madrid finding the net twice more before half-time. The first was ruled out for offside, Benzema a whisker too quick to latch onto Modric's pass after Camavinga robbed Asier Illarramendi.

But there was no stopping the second, a quick corner allowing Modric to collect on the edge of the area, with Silva shuffling out to meet him. Modric took Silva left, right and then left again, working enough space to unleash with his left foot, the ball soaring high into the net.

The Madrid storm eased a little in the second half but not much. Benzema and Rodrygo both went close while Real Sociedad were struggling to escape their own half for the opening 20 minutes.

Benzema banged in a third but Rodrygo's right foot was offside in the build-up and then with 16 minutes left, Vinicius Junior won a penalty after a meandering run down the left.

Vinicius nipped past Igor Zubeldia, stayed on his feet and then beat Aritz Elustondo, toppling over the defender's planted left leg and relying on VAR to spot that it was inside the area. Benzema skipped up to the penalty and guided it in.

Three minutes later, Asensio made it four, finishing off Carvajal's cut-back to round off a commanding win.

Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho said Kylian Mbappe deserves to win this year's Ballon d'Or, arguing the award should go to "the best player in the world" rather than be decided by World Cup or Champions League success.

"The best players in the world, there are two, three or four of them, and we know who they are: they're here," Mourinho told reporters Saturday ahead of Madrid's game against Malaga in La Liga.

"And for me there is one who, individually, made history this summer," Mourinho said, in reference to Mbappe, who became the all-time leading scorer in World Cup history during the tournament.

The France captain is among the contenders for the Ballon d'Or after finishing last season as the top scorer in La Liga, the Champions League and the 2026 World Cup, despite failing to win a major trophy.

His rivals include England striker Harry Kane, Spain midfielder and World Cup winner Rodri, and Paris Saint-Germain's European champions Ousmane Dembele and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.

Mbappe, who scored a hat-trick in Wednesday's 4-1 win over Real Sociedad, featured on the front page of Madrid-based sports daily AS on Saturday under the headline: "Mbappe targets the Ballon d'Or".

"You cannot give the Ballon d'Or to a player simply because he won the Champions League or the World Cup," said Mourinho.

"For me, the Ballon d'Or should go to one of those players who, when they retire, will be missed forever. Maradona, Ronaldinho, Ronaldo Nazario, Cristiano Ronaldo, Messi, Zidane..." he said.

"If we want to reward the Champions League, then give it to Luis Enrique. For the Spanish national team, give it to (Luis) De la Fuente. The best player in the world is something else, and he is neither at PSG nor in the Spain team," Mourinho added.

Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner made last year's US Open feel like two weeks of killing time until the inevitable.

They had separated themselves from everyone else in men's tennis while meeting in the French Open and Wimbledon finals. It seemed a foregone conclusion they would make it three in a row, which is exactly what happened.

With the No. 1-ranked Sinner sidelined, Alcaraz only returning now to defend his title after missing four months and Novak Djokovic perhaps finally showing his age, the US Open once again feels, well, open.

Just don't confuse that with meaning easier.

“It’s the same conversation,” American player Frances Tiafoe said. “Still got to beat seven guys however way you slice it.”

Sabalenka's summer swoon threatens her place at the top

The women's side has its own questions, with two-time defending US Open champion Aryna Sabalenka losing in the fourth round at Wimbledon and both hard-court tournaments she played since, putting her hold on the No. 1 ranking in jeopardy.

The top spot in the rankings could be in reach for multiple women and so is the trophy at the final major tournament of the year, with No. 3 Jessica Pegula saying “there’s not one or two super dominant players where you feel like they have to lose in order for you to have a chance.”

“It seems to me like maybe more open in a way, just because, I don’t know, there’s more chances,” added Pegula, who lost to Sabalenka in the 2024 final and last year's semifinals.

Play begins Sunday, with Pegula in Arthur Ashe Stadium's opening match and Djokovic leading off the night session before Venus Williams, at 46, faces Sofia Kenin.

Injuries have given other players an opportunity

Alcaraz gets one more day to prepare. He has been sidelined since April with a right wrist injury, deciding last week he was ready to return at the tournament where he has won two of his seven Grand Slam titles.

The most recent was at the Australian Open, but he went out not long after. Alexander Zverev won the French Open for his first major title, lost to Sinner in the Wimbledon final, then became the No. 1 seed in Flushing Meadows when Sinner determined the knee injury that has kept him out since that victory wasn't fully healed.

“It’s been a couple of months now where it’s been pretty similar: a lot of uncertainty, some of the top players, they’re kind of injured or they’re not playing. This is a little bit of the same, so we have seen lot of different players stepping up and a lot of different opportunities being up for grabs," said Alex de Minaur, the No. 6 seed from Australia.

Daniil Medvedev, the 2021 US Open champion, pointed at players such as Zverev and Arthur Fils, who beat Tiafoe for the Cincinnati Open title before coming to New York, as players who know there's an opportunity they don't want to waste.

“For them, they’re probably thinking about it, not in a bad way, but they’re like, we have a better chance without Jannik and maybe Carlos not 100% yet,” the No. 7-seeded Medvedev said.

Djokovic exited the Cincinnati tournament in his first match and afterward mentioned an unspecified health problem that bothers him in the heat. That could make it difficult for the 24-time Grand Slam singles champion to make another lengthy run in New York at 39.

American men are still trying to end a Grand Slam drought that dates to Andy Roddick at the 2003 US Open. Ben Shelton won in Montreal before Tiafoe's runner-up finish in Cincinnati, and Taylor Fritz lost to Sinner in the 2024 final in New York.

“I would say this is a golden opportunity,” ESPN commentator Patrick McEnroe said. “Obviously if Alcaraz comes back and gets through a few matches, looks good, he’ll quickly become the favorite. I mean, he’s the favorite right now, but he’d quickly become a bigger favorite. There’s no doubt the fact he hasn’t played since the spring, with Sinner out, this is a monster opportunity.”

Elena Rybakina, who beat Sabalenka in the Australian Open final, Pegula and No. 4 Coco Gauff are all in pursuit of the No. 1 ranking. Sabalenka could, depending on other results, lose it even if she becomes the first player to win three straight US Open titles since Serena Williams from 2012-14.

“I’ll try to do my very best, and we’ll see what happens with the end of this tournament,” Sabalenka said.

She may be vulnerable, but Alcaraz perhaps even more so. In 2025, it seemed only one man could beat him. This time, the list could be lengthy.

“I mean, he’s always a guy we’re going to look at, but a lot of guys believe they can not only get him but win the event,” Tiafoe said. “It’s going to be an exciting US Open.”

Liverpool have finalized ‌an agreement to sign French forward Bradley Barcola from European champions Paris St Germain in a deal worth up to £123 million ($166.43 million), media reports said on Saturday, with the 23-year-old set to become the latest high-profile addition to Andoni Iraola's squad.

The 20-times English champions will pay a package worth £106 million, with add-ons potentially rising to £17 ‌million, for Barcola, ‌the BBC said. The ‌Athletic reported that he is set to sign a five-year contract.

Reuters has contacted Liverpool and PSG for comment.

Barcola joined PSG from his boyhood club Olympique Lyonnais in 2023 and went on to enjoy a trophy-laden spell in the French capital, winning back-to-back Champions League ‌titles in 2024-25 ‌and 2025-26, three Ligue 1 crowns and two ‌French Cups, among other honors.

He made 152 ‌appearances across all competitions for PSG, scoring 39 goals and supplying 37 assists.

He had two years remaining on his PSG contract.

Barcola would be ‌the latest addition to new manager Andoni Iraola's squad following the close-season arrivals of Uruguayan defender Ronald Araujo on loan, French center back Jeremy Jacquet and Spanish forward Victor Munoz.

Liverpool's attacking options currently include British record signing Alexander Isak, Cody Gakpo, Rio Ngumoha and Munoz as the Merseyside club adjusts to life after talisman Mohamed Salah's departure. Forward Hugo Ekitike is also sidelined with a long-term injury.

Liverpool host Nottingham Forest later on Saturday.
