Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Sheikh Ahmed Nasser Al-Mohammed Al Sabah said on Tuesday that Iran was not a party to Al-Durra field, which is “purely Kuwaiti-Saudi.”

Referring to statements he made during a joint press conference with visiting French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian, Sheikh Ahmed said he meant “negotiations regarding the continental shelf, namely the tripartite negotiations involving Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Iran aimed at demarcating the borders of the continental shelf between the three countries.”

In a statement on Tuesday, the Kuwaiti minister underlined that Iran was not a party to Al-Durra field, which is Kuwaiti-Saudi in its entirety.

He noted that only Kuwait and Saudi Arabia enjoyed investment rights in this field in accordance with previously ratified bilateral agreements.

Last week, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait agreed to develop the Durra offshore gas field that lies in the shared neutral zone between the two nations. The agreement was signed by Kuwait’s Oil Minister Mohammad Al Fares and his Saudi counterpart Abdulaziz bin Salman Al Saud, Kuwait’s official news agency KUNA reported.

The offshore gas field is expected to produce 1 billion cubic feet per day of gas and 84,000 barrels per day of condensate.

In response, Iran said that the Saudi-Kuwaiti agreement was “illegal”, claiming that Tehran also had a share in the field and must be included in any action to operate it.

This is not the first time that the Iranian government has claimed that it owns a share in the gas field, which it calls Arash.

Iranian Petroleum Minister Javad Owji recently said that Tehran has completed comprehensive studies of Arash, “by drilling exploration wells and conducting seismic surveys”, according to local media reports.

“With the installation of a jacket, the drilling operation in the field will begin soon,” he noted.

In 2016, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait expressed, in a joint letter submitted to the Secretary-General of the United Nations, their protest against the repeated attacks and abuses by Iran’s military boats in the maritime area that is adjacent to the neutral zone.

Saudi Arabia strongly condemned on Tuesday an Iranian attack targeting the US ‌embassy ‌in Riyadh, and ‌stressed it reserved the right to respond, a foreign ministry statement said.

The Kingdom ‌reaffirmed its ‌full right ‌to ‌take all necessary measures to defend its ‌security and vital interests, including the option of responding to any aggression, the statement said.

It slammed the attack as a “flagrant violation of international law and norms, including the 1949 Geneva Conventions and 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.”

Saudi Arabia said Iran “acted this blatantly despite knowing that the Kingdom has confirmed that it will not allow the use of its airspace and territory to target Iran.” It warned that Iran’s attacks in the region could lead the region towards more escalation.

It stressed that it reserved the right to take all measures to protect its security, territories and safety of its citizens, residents and vital interests.

Iran struck the US Embassy in Saudi Arabia’s capital with two drones early Tuesday, said the Kingdom’s Defense Ministry spokesman Turki al-Malki.

The attack caused a limited fire and minor damage to the building, he added.

The Muslim World League (MWL) strongly condemned on Tuesday “the continued treacherous and indiscriminate Iranian” attacks against Saudi Arabia and other countries in the region.

In a statement, MWL Secretary-General and Chairman of the Organization of Muslim Scholars Mohammed Al-Issa slammed the Iranian aggression against peaceful neighboring countries.

He described Tehran’s actions as a “terrorism and corruption” that “violate religious values, international and humanitarian laws, and bilateral agreements, and breach the principles of good neighborliness.”

Drones targeted an Omani port on Tuesday, hitting a fuel tank, state media said, as Iran presses its campaign against the Gulf in response to US and Israeli strikes.

"A security source reported that fuel tanks at the commercial port of Duqm were targeted by a number of drones, one of which hit a fuel tank. The resulting damage was contained without any human casualties," the Oman News Agency (ONA) said.

The attack is the second on the port in three days, as Iran broadens its targets in the Gulf.

Oman, which played a mediation role in talks between the US and Iran, has called for a ceasefire in the war.

On Sunday, a worker was injured when two drones struck the same port. One hit accommodation for workers, while debris from the other landed near fuel tanks, reported ONA.

They were the first attacks on the Sultanate since war broke out, with Oman facing strikes despite acting as a mediator between Iran and the United States just days prior to the conflict.

On Monday, one person was killed in an attack on an oil tanker off the coast of the capital Muscat that caused an explosion and fire, authorities said.

The blast in the vessel's main engine room killed one crew member, an Indian national.
