Egyptian ministers held talks with World Bank officials on Wednesday to discuss cooperation mechanisms between the two sides as Cairo prepares for the COP27 Climate Summit, which will be held in Sharm el-Sheikh in late 2022.

In this regard, Minister of Environment Dr. Yasmin Fouad met with World Bank Managing Director of Development Policy and Partnerships Mari Pangestu and her accompanying delegation.

The meeting tackled key initiatives and topics that will be presented at the upcoming event, as well as the latest developments in the preparation for the Country Climate and Development Report the World Bank is preparing in several countries, including Egypt.

Fouad hailed the World Bank's support for Egypt’s environment sector and efforts to integrate the environmental dimension into the development process.

She further welcomed cooperation to support Egypt’s hosting of the climate summit, which seeks to implement the steps needed to accelerate climate action, present success stories from different regions for projects and programs to address the impacts of climate change.

According to Fouad, the event presents actual experiences to stimulate participation in combating the effects of climate change.

“Topics such as financing, dimensions of adaptation, priorities of developing countries, updated national contributions of countries, the required goals and actual experiences are put together to provide an integrated picture of how to start the implementation process.”

Pangestu, for her part, hailed Cairo’s efforts to integrate environment and climate change dimension into the development process, as well as the various initiatives it has launched in the fields of environment and climate change.

She also met with the Minister of Planning and Economic Development, Hala al-Saeed. Both sides discussed the features of Egypt’s Vision 2030 and the current modernization process to keep pace with global developments.

Saeed said the ministry is keen to integrate the environmental dimensions, sustainability and climate change into the various relevant national plans and strategies.

Adapting to climate changes has become a top priority for Egypt, the minister affirmed.

She cited the policies aimed at supporting the transition to a green economy, maintaining the sustainable use of natural resources as the focus of the country’s structural reforms program.

The European Union on Monday condemned new Israeli measures to tighten control of the West Bank and pave the way for more settlements in the occupied Palestinian territory, AFP reported.

"The European Union condemns recent decisions by Israel's security cabinet to expand Israeli control in the West Bank. This move is another step in the wrong direction," EU spokesman Anouar El Anouni told journalists.

The atrocities unleashed on El-Fasher in Sudan's Darfur region last October were a "preventable human rights catastrophe", the United Nations said Monday, warning they now risked being repeated in the neighbouring Kordofan region.

"My office sounded the alarm about the risk of mass atrocities in the besieged city of El-Fasher for more than a year ... but our warnings were ignored," UN rights chief Volker Turk told the Human Rights Council in Geneva.

He added that he was now "extremely concerned that these violations and abuses may be repeated in the Kordofan region".

The General Secretariat of the Arab League strongly condemned decisions by Israeli occupation authorities to impose fundamental changes on the legal and administrative status of the occupied Palestinian territories, particularly in the West Bank, describing them as a dangerous escalation and a flagrant violation of international law, international legitimacy resolutions, and signed agreements, SPA reported.

In a statement, the Arab League said the measures include facilitating the confiscation of private Palestinian property and transferring planning and licensing authorities in the city of Hebron and the area surrounding the Ibrahimi Mosque to occupation authorities.

It warned of the serious repercussions of these actions on the rights of the Palestinian people and on Islamic and Christian holy sites.

The statement reaffirmed the Arab League’s firm support for the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, foremost among them the establishment of their independent state on the June 4, 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
