Saudi Culture Minister to Head Board of Directors of Commission to Develop Taif

A Royal Order was issued to establish the board of directors of the new commission to develop Saudi Arabia's Taif province.

Minister of Culture Prince Badr bin Abdullah bin Farhan will head the board, which will include Prince Saud bin Nahar bin Saud, Princess Haifa bint Muhammad bin Saud bin Khalid, Ibrahim bin Muhammad Al-Sultan, Abdulaziz bin Ismail Trabzoni, Dr. Khaled Omar Azzam, and a representative from the Saudi Public Investment Fund.

The commission will work on coordinating efforts of concerned sectors in developing Taif. It will draft policies, plans, visions and studies, promote investment, develop various sectors and improve the quality of life, taking advantage of the massive tourism, natural, heritage and cultural potential in the province.

Taif is seen as the eastern gate to the Makkah region. It is a meeting point of several regions in the Kingdom, boasting several historic and heritage landmarks dating back centuries.

Last week, Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz issued a royal order to establish the Taif commission after reviewing proposals submitted by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of the Council for Economic and Development Affairs.

Qatar, MWL, GCC Condemn Houthi Missile Attacks on Saudi Cities of Taif and Yanbu

Qatar, the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and the Muslim World League (MWL) condemned Thursday's missile attacks launched by Yemen's Houthis against Saudi Arabia's cities of Taif and Yanbu, reaffirming their support for the Kingdom's security and stability.

In a statement on Friday, Qatar's Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the attacks as a reprehensible act of aggression that showed a blatant disregard for civilian lives, violated Saudi Arabia's sovereignty and constituted a clear breach of international law. It called for an immediate halt to such irresponsible acts.

The Muslim World League (MWL), in a statement issued by its Secretary-General, Sheikh Dr. Mohammed bin Abdulkarim Al-Issa, reiterated its condemnation of these treacherous terrorist attacks, which violate religious values as well as international and humanitarian law and norms. The attacks further demonstrate the terrorist militia’s criminal practice of deliberately targeting civilians and civilian objects.

Gulf Cooperation Council Secretary-General Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi also strongly condemned the Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia, reaffirming the GCC's full support for the Kingdom and all measures it takes to safeguard its sovereignty, security and stability, and protect its citizens and residents.

Saudi Minister of Foreign Affairs Prince Faisal bin Farhan bin Abdullah held separate meetings on Thursday in New York with Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs José Manuel Albares Bueno and UK Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs Ed Miliband.

The meetings were held on the sidelines of the High-Level Week of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.

During his talks with Bueno, the two ministers reviewed bilateral relations and discussed regional developments, as well as efforts to mitigate the repercussions of the current crisis in the region.

Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan met Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan at Saudi Arabia’s permanent UN mission in New York on Thursday, within the framework of the Makkah Agreement on mutual defense.

The ministers reviewed progress on establishing the agreement's secretariat, committees and working groups, as well as preparations for the launch of their operations.

The ministers condemned attacks on Makkah and Saudi civilian and economic facilities, praised the Saudi armed forces' readiness, and reaffirmed the Kingdom's right to defend itself under Article 51 of the UN Charter.

The ministers discussed plans for an emergency meeting of military chiefs to coordinate support for Saudi Arabia under their mutual defense pact and stressed the need to uphold international law, respect state sovereignty, and ensure maritime security and freedom of navigation.

The ministers reaffirmed their commitment to promoting lasting peace and stability in the region, supporting de-escalation efforts and pursuing peaceful solutions to ongoing crises.

The Makkah Joint Defense Agreement is a trilateral mutual defense pact signed by Saudi Arabia, Türkiye, and Pakistan on August 7, 2026.
