Sultan of Oman Haitham bin Tarik arrived in Germany Wednesday on a three-day official visit to meet President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

The Sultan's visit aims to explore cooperation between the two sides and address regional and international developments.

It comes at the height of supplies scarcity suffered by the European continent due to the war in Ukraine, and the situation in the region, most notably the fate of the nuclear agreement with Iran.

It is hoped that the discussions would promote ties between the two countries and increase the mutual benefits, especially in the economic, scientific, technical, and technological fields.

The German government's press office announced that the Chancellor would meet with Sultan Haitham on Thursday, noting that the meeting aims to address regional developments and cooperation in the economy and energy sectors.

The two leaders are expected to discuss the global situation, especially the impact of the war in Ukraine and energy security, and the Iranian nuclear issue.

Germany is one of the European countries in the talks to restore the Iranian nuclear deal, and Oman, which maintains close relations with Iran, plays a role in converging views between the West and Tehran.

Expert on Gulf affairs Cinzia Bianco tweeted that Germany and other European Union countries are alarmed by the possible failure of nuclear talks and fear Iran would join Russia and China.

Bianco said Europeans believe that Oman can persuade Tehran to change course.

It is hoped that the visit of the Sultan of Oman would boost cooperation in the energy field, especially in clean energy, hydrogen production, and solar and wind energies.

Oman's Investment Authority and Germany's Uniper signed a partnership in electricity generation and energy trading. They also cooperate with companies in the field of green hydrogen.

Sohar Port and Freezone are also in partnership with the German Hydrogenrise Company to support the production of the Jindal Shadeed green low-carbon steel plant.

Trade volume between Oman and Germany at the end of 2021 amounted to about $523 million.

German imports to Oman reached $449 million, while Omani exports to Germany amounted to $74.92 million.

Oman and Germany signed a treaty on the encouragement and reciprocal protection of investments, and the joint committee is working on further developing cooperation.
