Saudi Arabia detected its first monkeypox case in the capital Riyadh for a person arriving from abroad, state news agency (SPA) reported on Thursday, citing a health ministry statement.

The infected person is under medical observation and receiving care in line with the approved healthcare procedures, the ministry said.

Those in contact with the individual have been isolated and have not shown any symptoms, it added.

Talks between the United States and Russia kicked off in the Saudi capital Riyadh on Tuesday.

Sponsored by the Kingdom, the talks aim to improve ties between the two nations and are part of Riyadh’s ongoing efforts to promote global security and peace.

The meeting at the Diriyah Palace was attended by Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan bin Abdullah, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

Rubio was accompanied by US national security adviser Mike Waltz and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, while Lavrov sat next to the Kremlin's foreign affairs adviser, Yuri Ushakov.

Also present was Saudi Minister of State, Member of the Cabinet and National Security Adviser Dr. Musaed bin Mohammed Al-Aiban.
