Speaker of Libya’s east-based parliament Aguila Saleh met with Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani in Doha on Sunday to discuss boosting cooperation and the latest developments in the North African country.

Saleh briefed Sheikh Tamim on the latest developments in Libya, expressing gratitude for his continuous and constant support to his country and its people, reported the Qatar News Agency (QNA).

They also addressed several regional and international issues.

Sheikh Tamim reiterated Qatar's stance towards the Libyan people, supporting their choices and achieving their aspirations for development and prosperity for Libya's unity and stability.

Saleh was accompanied by Belgassem, son of Libyan National Army (LNA) commander Khalifa Haftar, and senior Libyan officials.

Saleh had arrived in Qatar on Saturday at the invitation of Qatari Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman.

He was welcomed by Speaker of the Shura Council, Hassan bin Abdullah al-Ghanim, senior Qatari officials, and the Libyan Ambassador in Doha, Mohammed Mustafa al-Lafi.

In his statement, Saleh did not mention that Haftar's son was accompanying him on his visit, but the latter appeared with the speaker in photos published by QNA and the official website of the Qatari Shura Council.

In Libya, Haftar received a French delegation that included President Emmanuel Macron's special envoy to Libya, Paul Soler, and French ambassador to Tripoli, Beatrice Duhelen.

The delegation met with various officials of the western region and stressed the need for parties to reach an agreement on holding elections.

Separately, head of the interim Government of National Unity (GNU) Abdulhamid al-Dbeibah will visit Senegal at the head of a ministerial delegation to meet with President Macky Sall, the current president of the African Union.

The UN Secretary-General appointed earlier this month Abdoulaye Bathily of Senegal as Special Representative and the Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) despite previous objections from Dbeibah.

The European Union on Monday condemned new Israeli measures to tighten control of the West Bank and pave the way for more settlements in the occupied Palestinian territory, AFP reported.

"The European Union condemns recent decisions by Israel's security cabinet to expand Israeli control in the West Bank. This move is another step in the wrong direction," EU spokesman Anouar El Anouni told journalists.

The atrocities unleashed on El-Fasher in Sudan's Darfur region last October were a "preventable human rights catastrophe", the United Nations said Monday, warning they now risked being repeated in the neighbouring Kordofan region.

"My office sounded the alarm about the risk of mass atrocities in the besieged city of El-Fasher for more than a year ... but our warnings were ignored," UN rights chief Volker Turk told the Human Rights Council in Geneva.

He added that he was now "extremely concerned that these violations and abuses may be repeated in the Kordofan region".

The General Secretariat of the Arab League strongly condemned decisions by Israeli occupation authorities to impose fundamental changes on the legal and administrative status of the occupied Palestinian territories, particularly in the West Bank, describing them as a dangerous escalation and a flagrant violation of international law, international legitimacy resolutions, and signed agreements, SPA reported.

In a statement, the Arab League said the measures include facilitating the confiscation of private Palestinian property and transferring planning and licensing authorities in the city of Hebron and the area surrounding the Ibrahimi Mosque to occupation authorities.

It warned of the serious repercussions of these actions on the rights of the Palestinian people and on Islamic and Christian holy sites.

The statement reaffirmed the Arab League’s firm support for the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, foremost among them the establishment of their independent state on the June 4, 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
