Bahrainis headed on Saturday to polling stations to choose their representatives in the parliamentary and municipal elections in their sixth legislative term to select candidates for 40 parliamentary and 30 municipal seats.

Polling began at 8:00 AM, amid security measures, hours after hackers targeted government websites.

“Websites are being targeted to hinder the elections and circulate negative messages in desperate attempts that won’t affect the determination of citizens who will go to the polling stations,” the Interior Ministry said.

More than 330 candidates, including 73 women, competed for the 40-seat parliamentary council, while 175 nominees, including 20 women, ran for 30 seats.

The number of eligible voters in all constituencies for the parliament reached 344,713, aged 20 and above.

As for the municipal elections, Gulf Cooperation Council citizens residing in Bahrain also have the right to cast their vote and non-residents who own real estate or land in the Kingdom.

Bahrainis abroad cast their ballots on Tuesday at 37 embassies and diplomatic missions.

A candidate must obtain 51 percent of the votes to win membership in the council of representatives, after which a run-off will be held after a few days if none of the candidates obtain this percentage.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Legislation and Legal Opinion Commission, Chancellor Nawaf Abdullah Hamza, the Executive Director of the 2022 parliamentary and municipal elections, praised the remarkable turnout of Bahraini voters since the opening of the polling centers.

In a statement to Bahrain News Agency (BNA), during his inspection of the electoral process at the polling centers at Seef Mall, he commended the citizens’ awareness and patriotism in dealing with all the negative messages and rumors aimed at disrupting the electoral process.

Hamza lauded the citizens’ insistence on participating massively in the elections to choose their representatives for the Council of Representatives and municipal ones.

Minister of Justice, Islamic Affairs and Endowments Nawaf al-Maawda explained that voters’ lists of former elections are considered when establishing the new ones. He indicated that persons who did not participate in previous polls would not be included in current lists, according to the law.

Maawda, also the Chairman of the Higher Committee over the integrity of the elections, not that this led to the decline in voter numbers between 2018 and now.

A government spokesman explained that no one is being punished for abstaining from voting, adding that the elections had more candidates than ever.

Parliament is made up of the elected House of Representatives and the Shura Council, whose forty members are appointed by the king.

The National Assembly consists of the 40 elected members of the Council of Representatives and the 40 royally-appointed members of the Shura Council.

The legislative role is represented in enacting the laws necessary for the state and proposing, discussing, and approving regulations, and this role is equally shared by the House of Representatives and the Shura Council under the provisions of law.

WHO Praises Saudi Arabia’s Success in Protecting Global Health during Hajj Season

The World Health Organization (WHO) praised Saudi Arabia for successfully ensuring that the 1447 AH Hajj season was free of disease outbreaks and public health threats, the Saudi Press Agency said on Sunday.

The organization commended the Kingdom’s effective management of one of the world’s largest mass gatherings, highlighting its strong public health preparedness and response capabilities amid ongoing global health challenges and emerging epidemic risks.

WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus congratulated Saudi Arabia on the success of the Hajj season and expressed appreciation for healthcare workers whose efforts contributed to a safe and healthy season, reflecting international confidence in the Kingdom’s ability to manage the health requirements of major mass gatherings to the highest standards.

WHO Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean Dr. Hanan Balkhy also congratulated Saudi Arabia on the successful Hajj season and praised the advanced health preparedness provided to pilgrims. She highlighted the deployment of modern health technologies, including robots and drones, the provision of healthcare services across various locations, and the continuous monitoring of pilgrims’ health throughout their journey, enabling them to perform their rituals safely and with peace of mind.

The praise coincided with the Ministry of Health’s announcement that the 1447 AH Hajj season was free of disease outbreaks and public health threats. The season witnessed the implementation of one of the largest health preparedness operations, encompassing integrated preventive, therapeutic, and emergency services. Efforts also included continuous epidemiological surveillance, health assessments, and risk management measures carried out in coordination with various national entities and international health organizations.

Minister of Health Fahad AlJalajel stressed that Hajj health security is global health security. He noted that Hajj represents a unique human gathering that brings together millions of pilgrims from around the world before they return to their home countries, making the protection of their health and safety a responsibility whose impact extends to global public health.

He added that the success of the 1447 AH Hajj season and its freedom from disease outbreaks and public health threats were the result of an integrated health ecosystem that begins before pilgrims arrive, including vaccination and immunization requirements and the enforcement of health fitness criteria to protect pilgrims and enable them to perform their rituals safely.

The ecosystem extends to early preparedness, epidemiological surveillance, risk assessment, and rapid response, supported by the integration of government entities and international health organizations and the mobilization of human, technical, and operational resources to serve pilgrims.

The minister also expressed gratitude to Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and Crown Prince and Prime Minister Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, for their continued support and attention to the healthcare sector and the pilgrim service system. He noted that this achievement was made possible by their directives, which have made human health and safety a top priority and contributed to enhancing the readiness of the healthcare system and its success in protecting pilgrims’ health.

The success of the 1447 AH Hajj season, along with United Nations and international commendations, reflects Saudi Arabia’s advanced position in mass gathering medicine and its leading role in developing and implementing best health practices for major human gatherings, contributing to strengthening health security at regional and global levels.

The general secretariat described this step as a legal and humanitarian victory for Palestinian victims and a fundamental contribution to advancing justice, accountability, and ending the prolonged state of impunity.

The OIC general secretariat renewed its call for the international community to take firm measures to put an end to all ongoing crimes and violations committed by the Israeli occupation, hold those responsible accountable under international criminal law, and work to provide international protection for the Palestinian people.
