British Foreign Minister James Cleverly stated that London would continue to assess and determine “the most effective way of curtailing the IRGC and indeed the Iranian government’s malign activities."
"Preventing Iran from developing a nuclear weapon remains an absolute priority in UK foreign policy," Cleverly said in an interview with Fox News on Monday.
He noted that only the US government has declared the IRGC a terrorist group, in response to a question on the reason why the UK hasn’t declared the IRGC a terrorist group yet.
"We, of course, keep these decisions under constant review, but the decisions that we make within the UK will always be based on our, you know, the primary commitment, which is to keep British nationals safe, to keep people in the region safe,” he said.
In recent months, several members of the British House of Commons have put pressure on Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's government to proscribe the IRGC as a terrorist organization.
Prominent political opposition activists, among them Reza Pahlavi, Masih Alinejad, Nazanin Boniadi, and Shirin Ebadi, have met British representatives to designate Iran's Revolutionary Guards a terrorist group.
Moreover, a bipartisan group of US congress members urged the European allies and the UK to designate Iran’s Revolutionary Guards as a terror group.
London is working very closely with "France, Germany, the United States in imposing sanctions, and obviously, we know very closely what we're doing in conjunction with the International Atomic Energy Agency to prevent Iran acquiring a nuclear weapon,” Cleverly stressed in his interview.
