The General Secretariat of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has applauded the short-term ceasefire agreement signed by the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces, following talks the two sides held in Jeddah.
The ceasefire will be effective starting May 22, 2023.
OIC Secretary-General Hissein Brahim Taha expressed hope that the agreement, aiming to relieve the suffering of the Sudanese people, will facilitate delivery of humanitarian aid and restore access to basic services.
"It is a significant step that paves the way towards ending the armed conflict, and promoting security, peace and stability in Sudan and the region as a whole," Saudi state agency SPA quoted Taha as saying.
Taha praised Saudi and US efforts that helped reach the agreement and encouraged the conflicting sides to engage in discussion, reach ceasefire, and resolve the crisis in Sudan through peaceful dialogue.
