Wildfires in Greece abated on Friday after burning for nearly two weeks but emergency services worked to prevent new flare-ups in the central part of the country, where people had fled massive explosions at an ammunition depot the day before.

The blazes, fanned by rising temperatures and strong winds, have killed five people, destroyed homes, farms and factories and scorched swathes of forest land since July 17.

In the hard-hit area of Magnesia, wildfires reached an air force ammunition depot close to the coastal town of Nea Aghialos on Thursday. The blaze at the depot caused powerful explosions and the coast guard said people were forced to escape by land and sea to Volos, the regional capital.

Fighter jets stationed at a nearby military airport were moved as a precaution, a government official said.

The shockwave was felt miles away, causing glass windows of several shops to shatter, locals told Reuters.

"They've split open, they peeled off, the panels have fallen, they are split open, only metal is left, the ironwork," said Dina Angeli, a local resident in Nea Aghialos.

Greek Defense Minister Nikos Dendias said on Friday he had ordered an investigation into the incident.

Firefighters made a "superhuman effort" but failed to tame the rekindling blazes in the wider area of Volos and in Aghialos, fire brigade spokesperson Ioannis Artopoios said.

Dozens of firefighters worked in the area, assisted by five aircraft and a helicopter, as strong winds could cause new flare-ups, the fire brigade said.

The labor ministry urged employers in an industrial zone of Volos to suspend operations for a second day on Friday.

On the island of Rhodes, where more than 20,000 tourists and locals fled seaside hotels and houses over the weekend, wildfires have died down after scorching about 10% of the island's acreage. But teams operated at several sites for an 11th day in an effort to fully tame all the fronts.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said on Thursday that Greece needed to take more steps to combat the effects of climate change, stressing the need to improve fire prevention further.

A Mars Bar From 1990’s Highlights ‘Shrinkflation’ Effect

A 35-year-old Mars Bar has been found during a house clearance – and the discovery has gone viral amid claims it highlights the effect of “shrinkflation.”

The chocolate bar with a best-before date of 1991 was found during a clear-out of a house in Scunthorpe.

Victoria Gordon, who runs the cleaning service, posted a photo on social media of the 62.5g bar alongside one of today's Mars Bars, which is 40g.

“It was nearly as big as my hand, which was kind of why I noticed it,” she said.

Speaking on BBC Radio Lincolnshire, Gordon said: "We were clearing out a hoarder's house and everything we were rooting through was decades old.”

She added, “This Mars Bar stood out to me because as I picked it up it was nearly the whole length of my hand. I was like, ‘Wow, look at the size of that!’”

A Mars spokesperson said: “Over the last 35 years, we have made a number of updates to our bar sizes and pack formats to reflect consumer demand, alongside considering wider external factors such as manufacturing costs and the price of cocoa.”

Gordon, who runs Pocket Rockets, is not sure what she will do with the bar, but she said she might be sitting on a “gold mine.”

She said: “I do post some hoarding videos but I've never had anything go this viral. It's so fascinating what people find so interesting.”

Gordon added, joking, “I almost put it in the skip [but] I might do a UK tour with it.”

A new wildfire broke out in Greece Monday morning southeast of the capital Athens, fanned by strong winds of more than 70 kilometers per hour, firefighters said.

At least 172 firefighters and around 40 vehicles have been deployed to fight the blaze in Kouvaras, 60 km (37 miles) southeast of Athens, in the Attica region, the fire service announced on X.

"Two water-bombing aircraft and four helicopters" are also taking part, the service added.

Agios Stylianos, a village near Kouvaras, has been ordered to evacuate by civil protection authorities.

Just hours later the flames appeared to have subsided, an AFP photographer said.

It marks the second fire near Athens this summer, after one that broke out 10 days ago northwest of the Greek capital and destroyed more than 11,000 hectares of pine forests and farmland.

Because of gusts reaching up to 130 km/h, it took five days to bring the fire under control.
Two helicopter crew members died in a collision with another helicopter while battling the flames.

Like much of the Mediterranean, Greece has experienced increasingly frequent and intense wildfires that scientists link to climate change.

The country remains on extreme alert and several regions are still classified at a very high fire risk.

Experts have warned about the increased severity of the fires affecting Attica, where Athens is located.

From 2017 to 2026, 42 percent of the total forest area in the region burned because of 15 major fires.

Flights ‌arriving at Catania airport in eastern Sicily were suspended until 1500 GMT on Monday after volcanic ash from a fresh eruption of Mount Etna drifted into airspace around the airport, operator SAC said.

Etna, which towers over Sicily's east coast, is one of ‌the world's most ‌active volcanoes and ‌frequently disrupts air traffic at Catania, the island's main airport and Italy's fifth busiest by passenger traffic.

"As the situation is significantly affecting operations, passengers are kindly advised to check the status of their flight with their ‌airline before ‌heading to the airport", SAC said in ‌a statement on Monday.

The situation ‌is being constantly monitored, and further updates will be provided depending on the evolution of volcanic activity and ‌weather conditions, it added.

The latest eruptive phase on Europe's highest volcano was continuing from vents at altitudes of 2,750 meters (9,022 ft) and 2,360 meters, feeding several lava flows and creating extensive lava fields, Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) said.

INGV's Volcano Observatory Notice for Aviation (VONA) remained at the highest alert level, red, indicating ongoing hazards for aircraft from ash emissions.
