UN special envoy for Iraq, Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, held on Sunday talks with Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian in the capital Tehran which touched on the latest developments in Baghdad.
During the meeting, the Iranian top diplomat deemed as “deep and solid” the relationship between Tehran and Baghdad, a Foreign Ministry statement said.
“In addition to the effects of such bilateral relations on Iran and Iraq, they also serve the stability, development and sustainable security in the region,” the FM added, stressing the importance of Iraq’s regional role.
Commenting on the statements delivered by Hennis-Plasschaert concerning shared borders, he emphasized the importance of ensuring security along the Iran-Iraq border, stressing that the border security agreement signed between Tehran and Baghdad in March should be implemented “accurately.”
For her part, Hennis-Plasschaert explained her views on the internal and regional developments related to Iraq. She also emphasized the constructive role of Iran in the West Asian country, the Foreign Ministry statement said.
The visit of the UN official to Iran comes at a time when the Iraqi government and political parties have started preparing for local elections scheduled for next December.
Earlier this month, Iran said the Iraqi government has until September to disarm Kurdish opposition groups based in the Kurdistan Region, threatening to use military action if Baghdad fails to meet the deadline.
In March, the Iraqi and Iranian governments signed a border protection deal in Baghdad, that includes coordination in protecting the common borders in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.
