Gen. Abdel Fattah Burhan, chairman of the Sudanese ruling Sovereign Council, has reportedly issued a decree to dissolve the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
Burhan instructed late Wednesday the Sudanese army's General Command, the general secretariat of the Sovereign Council, and other concerned authorities to put the decision into effect.
The decision came “as a consequence of the rebellion of these forces on the state and the grave violations they committed against citizens, and the deliberate sabotage of the country's infrastructure,” said a Sovereign Council statement on Telegram.
This coincides with the US imposing sanctions on the deputy leader of the RSF, Abdelrahim Dagalo, over human rights abuses in Darfur.
“We will act to promote accountability for those responsible for atrocities and to pursue justice for the victims,” according to the US Department of State.
Dagalo is the brother of RSF commander Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, known as Hemedti.
The war between RSF and Sudan's army broke out in mid-April after weeks of tension.
