A plane from Israel’s Arkia Airlines landed at Morocco’s Essaouira-Mogador International Airport on Thursday, inaugurating a new route between Essaouira and Tel Aviv.
Arkia’s Airbus 321 plane landed with more than 200 passengers on board, including members of the Moroccan Jewish community who came to celebrate the Hilula of Saint Rabbi Haïm Pinto.
Acting director of Essaouira-Mogador airport Mohamed Arhjoul said one flight a week will be operated between the city and Tel Aviv.
Essaouira boasts significant tourist potential, he added, noting that the airport is currently connected to seven international destinations (Marseille, Charleroi, Paris Orly, Bordeaux, Madrid, Las Palmas, and London), which are operated by four airlines.
The official revealed that during the first seven months of 2023, Essaouira-Mogador Airport welcomed around 100,788 passengers, an increase of 66% compared to the same period in 2019.
Redouane Khan, the head of Essaouira Regional Tourism Council, said the inaugural flight represents a new page in the history of Moroccan-Israeli ties in tourism.
Israeli tourist arrivals continue to grow in Morocco. In 2022, nearly 75,000 tourists visited the country, up 87% compared to 2019. At the end of June 2023, Morocco’s airports welcomed nearly 39,000 Israeli travelers, up 35% compared to the same period of 2022 and by 146% compared to June 2019.
