US forces have conducted a strike against a Houthi land attack cruise missile, US Central Command said in a statement.
“On Feb. 4, at approximately 5:30 a.m. (Sanaa time), US Central Command forces conducted a strike in self-defense against a Houthi land attack cruise missile,” it said.
“Beginning at 10:30 a.m. US forces struck four anti-ship cruise missiles, all of which were prepared to launch against ships in the Red Sea,” it added.
According to the statement, US forces identified the missiles in Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen and determined they presented an imminent threat to US Navy ships and merchant vessels in the region.
“These actions will protect freedom of navigation and make international waters safer and more secure for US Navy vessels and merchant vessels,” it said.
The United States intends to launch further strikes at Iran-backed groups in the Middle East, the White House National Security Adviser, Jake Sullivan, said on Sunday.
The United States and Britain unleashed attacks on the Iran-aligned Houthis of Yemen late on Saturday, a day after the US military hit Tehran-backed groups in Iraq and Syria in retaliation for a deadly attack on US troops in Jordan.
"We intend to take additional strikes, and additional action, to continue to send a clear message that the United States will respond when our forces are attacked, when our people are killed," Sullivan told NBC’s "Meet the Press" program on Sunday.
