Egyptian authorities kicked off investigations into the killing of a Yemeni military official, whose body was found inside his apartment in the Boulaq al-Dakrur area in the Giza Governorate, northern Egypt.
In an official statement, the Yemeni Embassy in Cairo announced on Sunday the killing of Major General Hassan bin Jalal Al-Obaidi, Director of the Military Industrialization Department of the Yemeni Ministry of Defense.
It said it was following the issue with “great interest and concern,” adding that has assigned specialists to the field, communicated with all relevant security authorities in Egypt, and will follow up on investigations to reach the truth behind the incident.
According to preliminary investigations published by local Egyptian media, the deceased had several stab wounds, and the crime was carried out about 48 hours before his body was found.
His friends discovered the crime after he suddenly disappeared and did not answer his mobile phone, which prompted them to go to his apartment where they found his body. Yemeni media noted that the man had his arms and feet tied and that he was found murdered in his apartment.
Al-Obaidi was the commander of military industrialization and in charge of manufacturing and import operations for the Yemeni army. He supervised the manufacturing of the army’s armored vehicles known as Al-Jalal 1, 2, and 3.
Yemeni researcher in strategic affairs Abu Bakr Badhib told Asharq Al-Awsat that it was too early to speak about the political implications of the incident before the results of the preliminary investigations by the Egyptian authorities are revealed.
But he stressed that the man had a long military history and was known to be an opponent of the Iran-backed Houthi militias.
