National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said on Thursday there are many details that still need to be hammered out to secure a ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas, and for a release of hostages in the Gaza Strip.
In a briefing to reporters, Sullivan said: “The signs are more positive today than they have been in recent weeks” and the remaining issues “can be resolved and should be resolved.”
“We’re going to keep driving until we actually get a deal. And President Biden will say a few words about this later today.”
Asked whether a portion of the bombs that were paused to Israel have been restarted, the National Security Advisor said: “As the President said a couple of weeks ago, the US policy on this has been clear. We paused the shipment of 2,000-pound bombs.”
Also, Sullivan said the US military's humanitarian pier off the coast of Gaza, which has been hampered by bad weather and aid distribution problems, will shut down soon.
“The real issue right now is not about getting aid into Gaza. It's about getting aid around Gaza effectively,” he said.
