SFDA, Saudi Municipalities Ministry Launch Ramadan Food Safety Campaign

The Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA), in cooperation with the Ministry of Municipalities and Housing, has kicked off a comprehensive regulatory campaign across Saudi Arabia to bolster food safety during the holy month of Ramadan.

The campaign focuses on verifying the quality of commonly consumed food items during this period and ensuring compliance with established health regulations.

Additionally, the campaign prioritizes intensified inspections in food warehouses, sales outlets, and distribution centers. It focuses on verifying the accuracy of food and nutritional data, assessing facility adherence to transportation and storage requirements, and examining product tracking mechanisms.

Alongside inspections, the campaign includes food safety training programs for employees a food establishment to help increase compliance with health requirements and ensure the provision of safe, quality-compliant products.

Special attention is given to the regions of Makkah and Madinah by implementing independent control plans tailored to the high volume of Umrah performers and visitors to the two holy mosques to guarantee food availability according to the highest safety and quality standards.

The SFDA stressed its commitment to ongoing control and inspection efforts across all branches and offices to ensure food establishments adhere to health standards and verify product safety throughout manufacturing, storage, and distribution, enhancing food security and safety during Ramadan.

Kuwait's foreign ministry issued on Sunday a circular indicating that it had listed eight hospitals in Lebanon as part of regulations related to "combating terrorism.”

Lebanon's health ministry expressed surprise and said it would seek clarification.

It said it received the Kuwaiti statement "with great surprise", adding it had not been provided with "any information or notification from any Kuwaiti entity about this matter.”

"The hospitals mentioned in the statement are registered with the syndicate of private hospitals in Lebanon and carry out their role in providing treatment and health services to all Lebanese without exception," the ministry statement said.

It called the facilities "an essential part of the Lebanese health system,” and said it would contact the relevant authorities to request clarification and "protect Lebanon's health system.”

It noted that "Kuwait has numerous joint projects with the ministry... and has been among the most prominent countries that have stood by the health system during the successive crises that Lebanon has faced.”

The latest move was "unprecedented and inconsistent" with the Gulf country's usual approach, it added.
