The Muslim World League (MWL) warned on Wednesday of the catastrophic consequences of the violent and expanded Israeli military operations to invade Gaza City, “as the extremist occupation government escalates its crimes and expands acts of killing, destruction, and forced displacement.”

In a statement by the General Secretariat, MWL Secretary-General and Organization of Muslim Scholars Chairman Sheikh Dr. Mohammed bin Abdulkarim Al-Issa renewed the league's “urgent and pressing call to the international community, especially the UN Security Council, to assume its moral and legal responsibilities and to take an immediate and serious stand to save civilians in the Gaza Strip from the war machine of the Israeli government”.

He accused Israel of persisting in “its arrogance and contempt for all international laws and norms and its disregard for the life and rights of the Palestinian people.”

Israel announced on Tuesday the launch of its ground offensive to seize control of Gaza's main urban center. Tanks on Wednesday moved short distances towards the city's central and western areas.

The United Nations, aid groups and foreign governments have condemned Israel's offensive and the proposed mass displacement.

The Palestinian death toll from the two-year war between Israel and Hamas has crossed 65,000.
