Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez welcomed on Tuesday the US peace proposal and said a two-state solution was “the only possible one” for the Middle East.
“It is time for the violence to cease, for the immediate release of all the hostages to take place, and for humanitarian aid to be provided to the civilian population,” Sánchez wrote on X.
Spain has been an outspoken critic of Israel’s war in Gaza, with Sánchez earlier this month calling Israel’s conduct a genocide.
US President Donald Trump met with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House on Monday after which he announced that the Israeli leader had agreed to the plan.
Speaking at a joint White House press conference following a meeting with Netanyahu, Trump said they were “beyond very close” to an elusive peace deal for Gaza. But he warned Hamas that Israel would have full US support to take whatever action it deemed necessary if it rejects what he has offered.
The White House released a 20-point document that called for an immediate ceasefire, an exchange of hostages held by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners held by Israel, a staged Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, Hamas disarmament and a transitional government led by an international body.
