Lionel Messi will play for another trophy. Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets clearly aren't ready to begin their retirements, either.

Tadeo Allende scored three goals — Alba and Busquets, a pair of longtime Messi teammates who will retire when this season ends, had the assists on his first two — and Inter Miami topped New York City FC 5-1 on Saturday night for the Eastern Conference title and a berth in the MLS Cup final.

Mateo Silvetti scored in the 67th minute for Inter Miami, with Messi setting up that goal — the 405th assist of his career for club and country, which is generally believed to be the most in soccer history, The Associated Press reported.

Telasco Segovia scored off a heel pass from Alba in the 83rd minute to turn it into a runaway, and Allende finishing off the hat trick in the 89th minute was the final play.

“We have reached the final with a brotherhood of moving forward," Inter Miami coach Javier Mascherano said. “The power of one group can overcome many things.”

Tennis star Carlos Alcaraz brought the East trophy onto the field to present to Inter Miami's ownership, before it was handed to Messi. Fireworks, confetti and a ton of happy photos and hugs followed, but it was also clear this wasn't the trophy Inter Miami wants most.

“We have made a fantastic playoff run and are very deserving of reaching the final," Silvetti said in Spanish.

Inter Miami — the No. 3 seed in the East — will play host to Vancouver for the league title on Dec. 6 at 2:30 p.m. Eastern. Vancouver topped San Diego 3-1 later Saturday night for the Western Conference title.

It'll be the first MLS final appearance for Inter Miami, which had never made it past the opening postseason round in any of its first five seasons. Messi's club went 0-2 against Vancouver this season, losing both legs of a semifinal meeting in the CONCACAF Champions Cup by a 5-1 aggregate.

Justin Haak scored in the 37th minute for NYCFC, which went 0-2-1 against Inter Miami this season.

The win moves Inter Miami one step closer to another trophy, after winning the Leagues Cup in 2023 and the Supporters' Shield as MLS' top regular-season team last year. Messi, a World Cup champion for Argentina and now eight-time Ballon d’Or winner, joined the team midway through the 2023 season when it was at the bottom of the MLS standings and in an 11-match winless streak.

Now? The club's brand is global, Messi's No. 10 jersey in the club's pink kit is sold all over the world, a new stadium near Miami International Airport is on the way for next season, Messi is signed through 2028, he seems like a lock to win his second consecutive MLS MVP award and the team is on the brink of an MLS title.

Stars flock to see this team because of Messi; Alcaraz was there Saturday night, as were some members of the US women's national team.

“Everyone in the world knows who Lionel Messi is. ... I think everyone thought he would come in here and do exactly what he's done,” said US women's forward Lindsay Horan — whose Messi fandom goes back many years.

Messi got struck along the left side of his head in the ninth minute and was briefly shaken up, remaining down near the center circle for a few seconds before eventually getting to his feet. He got tripped with Inter Miami on the attack about two minutes later, then took a direct kick from about 30 yards out — playing it into the box, but Silvetti’s header was easily caught by NYCFC goalie Matt Freese.

Inter Miami's next chance came a minute later. This one was cashed in — a long pass from Busquets was controlled by Allende, who easily beat Freese from about 12 yards out for a 1-0 lead.

Allende struck again on a header off a long pass from Alba in the 23rd minute, making it 2-0. And after Messi set Silvetti up for the 3-1 lead, what essentially was a 25-minute or so countdown to a celebration was underway.

“This is a very satisfying result but the work continues," Allende said in Spanish. "There is still work to do but happy with what we have accomplished.”

Luka ‌Modric is still available to play for Croatia, the country's soccer association (HNS) said on Saturday, ending speculation that the veteran midfielder would end his international career after this year's World Cup.

Croatia captain Modric, who turns ‌41 on ‌Wednesday, has been ‌playing for the national team since 2006, earning over 200 caps and helping them reach the 2018 World Cup final.

"Luka's decision makes me extremely happy, we are all aware ‌what ‌he brings to Croatia, both on ‌and off the pitch," ‌said Slaven Bilic, who returned for a second spell as Croatia manager after the team ‌exited this year's World Cup in the round of 32.

Modric, who spent the majority of his career at Real Madrid, joined AC Milan last year.

Croatia will visit the Czech Republic, host England and play Spain twice in the Nations League between September 26 and October 6.

Barcelona coach Hansi Flick is hoping teenage star Lamine Yamal is fit to face Valencia in La Liga on Sunday after taking a knock.

The 19-year-old winger did not train with his team-mates on Saturday but instead worked by himself at the training ground.

"For tomorrow we have to wait, I cannot say it today," Flick told reporters Saturday.

"We have to decide if it's better that he rests or he starts from the beginning, I'll speak with him and we'll decide that.

"Lamine is a player who likes to play football."

Flick said Yamal will travel with the team to Mestalla stadium, where Barca are looking to continue their 100 percent start to the season.

"He trained separately and everything was good, he will travel with us tomorrow," said Flick.

"He took a hit and he had some pain so we said it's better that he trains separately," added the coach.

"After the training he said everything was good so he will travel and hopefully he can play tomorrow."

Yamal impressed in the 5-2 win over Rayo Vallecano on Monday, netting his first two goals of the season.

Rivals Real Madrid slipped up in a 1-0 defeat at Real Betis on Friday, giving champions Barca the chance to establish themselves as sole league leaders.

"When you see the game yesterday, Real Madrid also played well... they had big, big chances," said Flick.

"This is football, (slipping up) can always happen. For us it's important that we focus on ourselves."

New arrival Gabriel Jesus is likely to begin on the bench with winger Raphinha staying as the starting striker after notching five goals in three games playing out of position.

"In this moment (Raphinha) is doing really great," explained Flick.

"He's the best option for us at the moment in this position."

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk said Alexander Isak's quality has never been in doubt after the Swede's double delivered a first win for the Reds under Andoni Iraola at Ipswich.

Isak scored both goals of the 2-0 victory on Friday inside the opening 10 minutes to take his tally for the season to three in three games.

After a Premier League record £125 million ($169 million) move from Newcastle 12 months ago, Isak's first season as a Liverpool player was dogged by fitness and injury problems.

He has already matched his Premier League goal tally from last season and Van Dijk is confident Isak will return to the level that made him one of the world's most sought-after strikers.

"I don't think the quality is anything that we doubt," Van Dijk told Sky Sports.

"Last year he had an unfortunate bad injury and it was down to him, the hard work that he put in each and every day to get back as quickly as possible.

"I think he had a very good World Cup, he had a very good pre-season, and he's getting up to speed now.

"We've seen how good he is playing against him and now he's going to show the world with a Liverpool shirt as well."

Isak was sidelined for three months last season after breaking his fibula and is hoping a difficult first year as a Liverpool player is finally behind him.

"It was not easy, obviously. It was a long injury, a difficult season in general," he said.

"I was thinking to have a good World Cup firstly and then to start off this season well, which I feel like I've done now.

"That's kind of behind me, but obviously it wasn't easy."

Both of Isak's goals were set up by Cody Gakpo, who nearly departed Liverpool this week.

A move to Manchester City was reportedly in the pipeline had Liverpool been able to source a replacement in the final days of the window.

But Van Dijk is happy that his Dutch international teammate remained at the club.

"I said it before the transfer window was closed, he's important for us," added Van Dijk.

"He showed it today again with assists and over the last couple of years as well, so let's keep going."
