Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday held phone calls with the leaders of Israel and Iran, the Kremlin said, offering mediation amid large-scale protests in Iran that have raised fears of a military confrontation in the region.

Independent monitors say Iranian security forces have killed thousands in a forceful response to nationwide anti-government protests -- a crackdown that prompted threats of military action by the United States, Israel's key ally.

Iran and Israel fought a brief war in June that saw unprecedented Israeli attacks on Iranian military and nuclear facilities. The United States had briefly joined those strikes, hitting three major Iranian nuclear sites.

On Friday, Russia announced Putin was in contact with both Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian in a bid to cool tensions between the two rivals.

"The situation in the region is highly tense, and the president continues his efforts to facilitate de-escalation," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

Moscow is a close ally of Iran. It has also strived for good relations with Israel, though those ties became strained amid Russian criticsm of Israel's actions in Gaza since October 7, 2023.

In a call with Israel's Netanyahu on Friday, the Kremlin said Russia had expressed its "readiness to continue its mediation efforts."

It did not clarify what current efforts were being undertaken or comment on the protests in Iran.

Moscow had previously offered mediation during the June war.

Peskov said that Moscow would announce "the results of our telephone conversation with the Iranian President very soon."

Netanyahu said Sunday that he hoped Iran would soon be freed from what he described as the "yoke of tyranny", amid the protests.

However, the rallies appear to have diminished over the last few days in the face of repression and a week-long internet blackout.

Iran has repeatedly accused the United States and Israel of inciting the unrest and trying to undermine the Islamic republic's national unity.

A man with dual UK-Iranian citizenship was arrested Thursday over a mysterious "major incident" at an airbase in southwest England as Israel said it had warned London about an attack.

The sixth arrest came after British Prime Minister Andy Burnham told the BBC there were "strong indications that Iran played a part in what happened over the weekend at RAF Fairford", a base used by the US military in its war against Iran.

Iran denounced the British government's "baseless accusations" and condemned London for making military bases and facilities under its jurisdiction "available for the planning and execution of the US-Israeli military aggression against Iran".

Counter Terrorism Policing said in a statement Thursday that a "25-year-old man, a dual UK/Iranian national, was arrested" in Westminster in central London "on suspicion of preparation of terrorist acts".

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, speaking to Fox News late Wednesday, said Israel had tipped off Britain about a plot.

"We gave the Brits the intel that there was going to be an attack, and it's an Iranian-sponsored attack," he said.

Police were called to the base in the Cotswolds early Sunday, triggering an evacuation of the nearby village and the declaration of a "major incident".

A farmer living in the village of Whelford near the airbase called the police after seeing vans blocking a road and a group of masked men.

Police arrested five London-based Britons, all men in their mid-20s, at the scene and examined several vehicles. The men were then released on bail Monday, a move criticized by Washington.

Police then revealed no explosives were found at the scene and the nature of the threat has not been explained by officials.

Adding to the mystery, British media reported that officers were alerted to the incident by one of the initial suspects but police have not commented on the reports.

According to AFP, Vicki Evans, senior national coordinator for Counter Terrorism Policing, said in a statement Thursday that the investigation is "hugely complex" and police are looking at "all possible angles -- including possible foreign state involvement".

Iran's embassy in London earlier said it "categorically rejects and strongly condemns" speculation it was involved while Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Burnham was "barking up the wrong tree".

Britain gave the US the greenlight to use RAF Fairford for defensive strikes against Iran, drawing Tehran's ire and unease from some residents in the Gloucestershire countryside where the base is located.

About ‌400 schools in France are expected to remain closed on Friday after student protests that began over education-related grievances escalated into violence in some places, said Reuters.

"There are a little over 400 schools and other educational establishments that I know of that will be closed," French Education Minister ‌Edouard Geffray ‌said in an interview ‌with broadcaster France 2 late Thursday.

According to close to Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu, intelligence agencies told a crisis meeting on Thursday that the protest movement had been initiated by politicians from the hard left, including members of ‌La France ‌Insoumise (LFI).

LFI lawmaker Louis Boyard denied the claim ‌in comments to French broadcasters.

The protests ‌against teacher shortages and dilapidated school buildings erupted in the Paris region last month but have turned increasingly violent ‌as they spread nationwide, with dozens injured and police making hundreds of arrests.

Student protesters started fires in at least two high schools on Thursday, while teachers were inadvertently splashed with petrol at a third in the southern city of Marseille, officials said. At least one car was torched in Strasbourg in the east and riot police clashed with youths in Toulouse in the southwest.

A tanker was attacked Thursday while transiting the Strait of Hormuz, a British maritime agency said.

The vessel was hit by an "unknown projectile" in the strategic waterway, "resulting in a fire," the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations Centre (UKMTO) said.

The crew were reported safe, but the damage was as yet unknown, UKMTO added.

The agency did not specify which flag the tanker was flying, nor did it offer its planned route. It also did not say if it was carrying crude or liquefied natural gas (LNG).

The Strait of Hormuz, through which a fifth of the world's oil and LNG passed before the US and Israel launched strikes against Iran in late February, is still at the heart of the conflict, said AFP.

Tehran has been blocking the passage of commercial ships, firing on vessels it accuses of unauthorized crossings.

Washington responded with a counterblockade of Iranian ports in an effort to prevent Tehran from exporting its oil.

The United States has not launched strikes on Iranian targets since September 1, even if ships are still regularly targeted in the strait.
