Red Sea Global (RSG) announced on Tuesday a major sustainability milestone, revealing that it successfully avoided 117,879 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO₂e) emissions during 2024.

The achievement was independently verified and officially certified by DNV, confirming the company's full reliance on renewable energy and low-carbon operations.

In a statement, Red Sea Global said this figure represents the volume of emissions that would have been generated had conventional energy sources and transportation systems been used. To put the impact into perspective, the achievement is equivalent to removing approximately 27,500 cars from the roads for an entire year or eliminating the annual electricity consumption of nearly 24,500 homes.

Group Chief Environment and Sustainability Officer at Red Sea Global Raed Albasseet said: "Avoiding nearly 118,000 tons of emissions at this advanced stage of development demonstrates the powerful impact of embedding sustainability into operations from day one.”

“As our destinations continue to expand, this positive impact will grow further, proving to the world that luxury tourism can be a leading force in protecting and regenerating nature,” he added.

He stressed that these results stem from Red Sea Global’s strong commitment to clean energy principles. The Red Sea destination is currently powered entirely by 100% renewable electricity, supported by more than 760,000 solar panels and the world’s largest battery storage facility, ensuring a continuous supply of clean energy around the clock.

In the field of sustainable mobility, he explained that the company operates an advanced fleet of electric vehicles and buses, supported by a network of 150 renewable energy-powered charging stations.

Albasseet also noted that Red Sea International Airport has taken pioneering steps by beginning the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and Lower-Carbon Aviation Fuel (LCAF) for seaplane operations, while continuing to work with partners to expand their use on commercial flights serving the destination.

These initiatives form a key pillar of Red Sea Global’s journey toward achieving net-zero emissions (Scopes 1 and 2) by 2030. The results align with the goals of Saudi Vision 2030 and the Kingdom’s Circular Carbon Economy Framework, supporting Saudi Arabia’s ambition to reach net-zero emissions by 2060.

Saudi Arabia’s KACST and Imperial College London Strengthen Collaboration in Quantum Brain Research

Saudi Arabia’s King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST) signed a research partnership with Imperial College London to advance quantum brain research, study quantum mechanical phenomena, and connect quantum science with engineering, neuroscience, and biochemistry.

The agreement was signed in the presence of President of KACST Dr. Munir Eldesouki on the sidelines of the Quantum Forum. The event is organized by the Center for the Fourth Industrial Revolution in Saudi Arabia, an affiliate of the World Economic Forum, in partnership with KACST and King Salman Science Oasis, under the theme “Shaping the Future Quantum Workforce.”

The partnership focuses on developing an engineering framework to study quantum properties associated with neuronal cell membranes and the role of fatty acids in neural signaling.

It includes the development of measurement and testing technologies and tools that bring together quantum electronics, semiconductors, biomimetic platforms, and neuroimaging. The partnership also includes a research track examining the relationship between maternal fatty acid nutrition and fetal brain development and function, particularly in relation to cognitive abilities.

Director General of the Bioengineering Institute at KACST Dr. Mai Alzaydi said the partnership is focused on advancing quantum brain research as part of KACST’s efforts to support multidisciplinary research that brings together fundamental science and promising technological applications, enabling Saudi researchers to participate in this scientific field.

Head of Research at the Quantum Brain Laboratory at Imperial College London Professor Mark Johnson said the collaboration represents a significant milestone in quantum brain research by integrating quantum physics, neuroscience, engineering, and biochemistry within a testable research framework.

It also opens new opportunities for KACST researchers to take a leading role in shaping this emerging field in collaboration with leading scientists from Imperial College London, he added.

Sinabung Volcano on Indonesia’s Sumatra Island Erupts without Reports of Casualties

Mount Sinabung on Indonesia erupted Monday, spewing a column of black ash and smoke 3,500 meters (11,482 feet) from the top of the mountain into the sky over Sumatra island.

There were no immediate reports of casualties, evacuations or disruptions to flights in the region. But residents, visitors and tourists were advised to refrain from activities in nearby villages in Karo district in North Sumatra province and areas within 6 kilometers (3.7 miles) of the summit.

Roads, vehicles and buildings in several villages in Karo affected by the eruption were covered in gray ash. Local authorities distributed masks to residents to protect themselves.

Officials raised the volcano alert level to “Watch,” the second-highest level for volcanic activity, which expanded the safe zone around the 2,600-meter (8,530-foot) mountain.

“This eruption is considered an initial eruption, and it is possible that a larger eruption could occur,” Lana Saria, chief of Indonesia’s Geological Agency, said in a statement Monday.

The agency previously recorded visual evidence of Mount Sinabung's increased activity in mid-August including dozens of earthquakes and expanded the recommended radius for public activities.

About 30,000 people have been forced to leave their homes around Sinabung in the past few years because of volcanic activity.

Indonesia is an archipelago of more than 280 million people with frequent seismic activity and Sinabung is among more than 120 active volcanoes. The country is prone to seismic upheaval due to its location on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” an arc of volcanoes and fault lines encircling the Pacific Basin.

Coral Bleaching Occurring Too Frequently for Reefs to Recover, Scientists Say

Coral reefs are experiencing bleaching events so frequently that they no longer have time to recover before the next one strikes, with global coral cover now well below normal levels and at risk of irreversible decline, scientists said on Monday.

The world's coral reefs sustain a quarter of all marine life, make coastlines more resilient and provide food and livelihoods for millions of people, but their survival has been threatened by pollution and increasingly frequent mass bleaching caused by soaring ocean heat.

The gap between bleaching events once stretched for decades, but now averages just five or six years, a group of ‌scientists known as the ‌Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network said in a report based ‌on ⁠more than 40 ⁠years of data from nearly 37,000 reef sites in 120 countries and territories.

"If we give them enough time, they have the capacity to recover," lead author Manuel Gonzalez Rivero said. "But we haven't seen that amount of time being allowed. In fact, the frequency of those bleaching events has pretty much doubled."

Bleaching occurs when corals expel the colorful algae living in their tissues. Without the algae delivering nutrients to the corals, they become pale and vulnerable to starvation and disease. While a ⁠bleached coral is not dead, ocean temperatures need to cool off if ‌it is to have any hope of recovery.

The ‌report's release comes as Pacific leaders gather in Palau on Monday for the annual Pacific Islands Forum. ‌The leaders are expected to coordinate climate priorities before the COP31 climate conference later this ‌year.

Its findings provide further evidence of the impact that climate change is having on fragile coral reef ecosystems, with hard coral cover shrinking 9.5% below the historical average over the 2020-2024 period.

"We had 40 years of coral cover around the world that had remained relatively unchanged until 2010," Gonzalez Rivero said. "Since 2010 ‌there has been a very steep change."

'STAIRCASE OF DECLINE'

Scientists recorded the world's first mass bleaching event in 1998 and three more ⁠have occurred since 2010.

When ⁠temperatures fall, the reefs can recover relatively quickly. Over 2017-2019, reefs gained 6% coral cover, nearly offsetting the 6.6% loss from the 2016 bleaching event.

The latest bleaching in 2023 was the most extensive on record, impacting 77% of the world's coral reef areas, part of what Gonzalez Rivero described as a "staircase of decline".

With El Niño weather patterns intensifying and ocean surface temperatures reaching a record high of 21.1 degrees Celsius (69.98°F) on August 22, another bleaching event could strike the world's reefs this year, he said.

"It is very likely given the temperatures."

Rapid cuts in emissions and the management of local threats — including unsustainable fishing and excessive coastal development — could limit further losses, the report said.

"We must act now to halt this decline and invest in solutions that reduce pressures and build resilience," said David Obura, chair of the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services.

"Delayed action risks locking in irreversible losses."
