Croatia coach Zlatko ‌Dalic was unhappy with what he called the "bad refereeing" in his team's 2-1 loss to Portugal in their round of 32 clash on Thursday that eliminated them from the World Cup but said he did not want to use it as an excuse.

Portugal were awarded a penalty after a Video Assistant Referee review, which Cristiano Ronaldo slotted home to tie the game before Goncalo Ramos fired them ahead in the 94th minute.

Drama ensued late in stoppage time when Josko Gvardiol thought he had ‌equalized but a ‌review showed the ball touched Igor Matanovic ‌on the way through, which made Gvardiol offside, and Norwegian referee Espen Eskas awarded a penalty.

"It was very bad refereeing," Dalic told reporters, saying he felt his team should have been given more free kicks.

"But Croatia lost. I'm not going to find any excuses," the 59-year-old added. "We could have won this earlier."

Dalic said his team did not create enough chances in the first half ‌and looked much better in the ‌second but ultimately their luck from the previous two World Cups ‌had run out.

Croatia finished runners-up in 2018 and third in ‌2022 but will leave without a medal this time around.

It was also likely 40-year-old captain Luka Modric's last chance to win the sport's greatest prize -- and his final match at the tournament -- after being ‌Croatia's heartbeat for years.

"Well, this was probably his last World Cup," Dalic said of the midfielder. "And I'm sorry that it ended this way."

But while the curtain is closing on this era of Croatian football, Dalic said the national side's future was bright.

"I'm not afraid for the future of the Croatian team," Dalic added. "We have a lot of young players coming in and some of them have shown the quality today.

"We've come to an end of a wonderful era," he added. "And some new beginnings await us."

As for his own future, Dalic, who has led Croatia since 2017, did not offer any insight.

"God knows what will happen in the next World Cup, but we'll talk about it in Croatia," he said.

Ailing Novak Djokovic suffered his earliest Grand Slam exit in 20 years on Sunday, falling in five brutal sets to Mariano Navone in the first round of the US Open.

The 48th-ranked Argentine's 7-6 (7/5), 5-7, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 victory ended Djokovic's latest bid for a record 25th Grand Slam title.

It also ended his run of 78 Grand Slam first-round victories, a streak stretching all the way back to Djokovic's 2006 loss to Paul Goldstein at the 2006 Australian Open.

Djokovic was seen vomiting on court and struggled with late-match cramps but appeared to have finally taken control when he broke Navone for a 2-1 lead in the fourth set with a vintage backhand winner down the line.

But Navone won the next five games, raising his arms in celebration after fighting off two break points for a 5-2 lead and breaking Djokovic again to force the fifth set.

Djokovic took a medical timeout before the final set, receiving massage on his spine and another delivery of medication.

But Navone jumped to a 3-0 lead in the decisive set and there was no road back for the Serb as his opponent dropped just one point on his own serve as he sprinted to the finish line.

England forward Ollie Watkins has left Aston Villa to join Al Hilal, his new Saudi club announced on Sunday.

The deal follows Villa's signing of Senegal forward Nicolas Jackson from Chelsea.

Al Hilal said the 30-year-old Watkins had signed a three-year deal and will be in line to play in their league match against Al Ahli on Tuesday.

He joins a squad including Crysencio Summerville, who signed from West Ham earlier in the transfer window.

Watkins has scored seven goals in 24 appearances for England.

Villa coach Unai Emery had criticized Watkins for refusing to play in last weekend's 4-0 defeat to Brighton to open their Premier League campaign as he sought to force through his move to Al Hilal.

But Emery said on Friday that there were no hard feelings.

"Last week I was a little bit disappointed. I was disappointed, but we spoke about it, and now (it's) clear, he is a fantastic player, fantastic guy and one mistake is not closing all the good things he did here," Emery said ahead of Arsenal's visit to Villa Park on Monday.

Watkins began his career at Exeter City in League Two before he moved to Brentford in the Championship.

He then joined Villa, where he spent six fruitful seasons, culminating in a Europa League victory last season.

Barcelona coach Hansi Flick indicated teenage star Lamine Yamal is finding his way back to his "top level" ahead of Monday's LaLiga clash against Rayo Vallecano.

The 19-year-old struggled in Barca's first match of the season at Elche but improved against Athletic Bilbao in the second, albeit without finding the net.

Flick said the Spanish World Cup winner is returning to his best, which Yamal has not hit since suffering a hamstring injury in April.

The winger returned at the World Cup but, despite Spain's success, had limited individual impact at the tournament.

"I know everyone is worried about how is Lamine, how is he doing. And of course, look at his situation, he played a World Cup after a huge injury," Flick told reporters Sunday.

"Now he's coming back after three weeks' holiday... and also the first game maybe was not his best game.

"But I said this, I was very happy that he starts the game and he worked for the team."

Yamal disappointed in the first half against Athletic on Thursday, but stepped up a gear after the break.

"He played 90 minutes against Bilbao. And for him at the moment, it's also good to (have) 90 minutes on the pitch," continued Flick.

"We saw him in some situations really on this top level. And now, you couldn't see this in the training (session) today, but I saw it and it was excellent.

"Everyone loves Lamine and he's in a good way. And we have to support him and we do that."

Yamal seemed in a bad mood after the game against Elche, but happier in training ahead of the Rayo clash.

"Of course, it's always good when the players are smiling, but it's not every day the same day," added Flick.

"I'm also not smiling every day -- it's like that."

Barca won both of their opening fixtures with Raphinha playing as a makeshift number nine, with the champions unable to land top target Julian Alvarez from Atletico Madrid.

"Of course I'm happy with my team, (sporting director) Deco is working on that to strengthen the team. We don't have pressure," said Flick, reiterating he is content with the players available to him if Barca don't sign a new striker.
