The future is bright for Canada even though the present is clouded by a 3-0 loss to Morocco in ‌the round of 16 at Houston on Saturday.

To be fair, the score was not indicative of how the Canadians had the No. 6 team in the world on the ropes in the first half and doesn't diminish the fact that the Canadians went further in this World Cup than any previous foray, Reuters said.

Despite key injuries and the novelty of playing the big boys on the biggest stage, coach Jesse Marsch, as only he can be, was ebullient when looking ahead.

"I'd rather be us than them," he said. "As good as Morocco is, I'd rather be us, right? I'm really proud of our guys. We went after the game, they're hurting right now, but my goodness, I couldn't be prouder.

"What a privilege our fans have had to root for a team like this that goes after the game, that doesn't play defensive, that shows that they can be better. Of course, we have to be in these situations more and more and then we have to find ways to succeed and then we have to build from that. But what a great team."

But no matter how Marsch feels, Morocco took advantage of their chances while Canada failed to pounce early in the physical match. There were four yellow cards apiece ‌and Canada had ‌24 fouls to 14 for Morocco.

Azzedine Ounahi gave Morocco the lead in the 50th minute and ‌added another in the 82nd minute on a breakout before Soufiane Rahimi scored against a pressing Canada in the eighth minute of stoppage time.

Morocco, unbeaten in 34 matches, play July 9 in Foxborough, Mass., against France, a 1-0 winner over Paraguay on Saturday.

Morocco suffered a major blow in the 22nd minute when leading scorer Ismael Saibari had to leave with a possible hamstring injury. The 25-year-old attacking midfielder scored in all three group matches and on Wednesday it was announced he was joining Germany's Bayern Munich from Dutch side PSV Eindhoven.

After a listless first half, Morocco stunned Canada with a goal from nowhere on only their second shot of the match.

Achraf Hakimi lined up for a free kick to the right of the goal after a yellow card, the seventh of the match, to Canada's Luc de Fougerolles for a sloppy foul on Rahimi.

"We had 11 incredible performances in the first half, we were unlucky not ‌to get the lead," Marsch said. "We should have been on top of the game. We should have ‌had the lead, and then it's the fine details, right? "Like, do we need to foul on the sideline, and then dealing with the set piece, but ‌they have quality."

Ounahi scored an insurance goal to become the first Moroccan to score twice in a World Cup match since Salaheddine Bassir in ‌1998 against Scotland.

With the victory, Morocco is the first African country to make the World Cup quarterfinals more than once, having done so in each of the last two World Cups.

"We are no longer a surprise," Morocco manager Mohamed Ouahbi said through a translator. "Now when people talk about Morocco we're a major contender and it's a great source of pride. I think it's only the beginning and I hope we continue to have runs like this."

Canada, even through disappointment, exits its first knockout stage ‌appearance with pride.

"I think everybody back home should be very proud," Canada midfielder Stephen Eustaquio said. "We always felt the love back home from the Canadians. We're finally a soccer country. We need this support to go forward.

"We're going to enter another cycle of four years. Everybody, the youngsters here, they need (the fans') support throughout the four years so that we make sure that we can go even further in the next World Cup."

Being healthy would help. Canada was dealt a serious setback in the second group match vs. Qatar when midfielder Ismael Kone broke his leg after a horrendous tackle against him.

Also, captain Alphonso Davies, who sustained a hamstring injury in early May playing for Germany's Bayern Munich, made only one appearance in the World Cup - the final 15 minutes against South Africa in the round of 32.

Still, Marsch was defiant to the end in praising his team's effort against Morocco.

"We were the better team," he said. "They made a couple more plays than us. ... It was just they have a little bit of quality in the final third, but we lacked a little ability to make a play when we needed to."

That makes him even more anxious for 2030.

"I think that there's real excitement and with that excitement comes higher expectations," he said. "So next World Cup, everyone's going to say that anything less than the round of 16 is a failure, right? Anything less than the next Copa America semifinals is a failure.

"We enjoy those expectations. Nobody has higher expectations of ourselves than us. Nobody's more disappointed in the fact that we lost the game that we were very much in control of than ourselves and so we have to swallow that pride. We have to continue to think about how to get better, be humble to the fact that we have a lot more work to do."

Former Wimbledon finalist Nick Kyrgios has been provisionally suspended after testing positive for a cocaine metabolite during an ATP event in Mallorca, the International Tennis Integrity Agency said on Wednesday.

The 31-year-old acknowledged the finding on his Instagram account, telling his followers: "I wanted you to hear this from me first."

"I recently failed a drug test in Mallorca after testing positive for cocaine. I made a huge mistake and I take full responsibility for it," he wrote.

Kyrgios provided a sample at the ATP 250 tournament in Spain on June 22 and a World Anti-Doping Agency accredited laboratory subsequently detected benzoylecgonine, a metabolite of cocaine, the ITIA statement read.

Cocaine is classified as a stimulant and a substance of abuse under WADA rules and is prohibited in competition.

Former Manchester United and Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba will be released by Monaco after a series of injuries, the French club said on Wednesday.

Pogba, 33, won the World Cup with France in 2018 but since serving a ban for doping has struggled to return to the elite level.

According to AFP, Monaco said in a statement that the objectives they had set for Pogba were "only partially achieved" and the Ligue 1 club were therefore ending his contract that would have run until June 2027.

Pogba is currently sidelined with a thigh injury, just after returning from a knee problem.

Monaco paid tribute to the player's "remarkable mindset, determination and unwavering high standards" and said even when injured he had had a positive influence on the Monaco squad by "sharing his experience and know-how" with the other players.

The new Premier League season kicks off on Friday, setting the stage for a galaxy of stars to shine in the 2026-27 campaign.

AFP Sport looks at five players to watch:

Morgan Rogers (Chelsea)

Signed for a British record £117 million ($158 million) from Aston Villa, the England midfielder will be expected to lead the Xabi Alonso revolution at Stamford Bridge.

Rogers is Chelsea's marquee close-season recruit and must live up to his eye-watering price tag if Alonso is to revitalize the Blues after their dismal 10th-place finish in the Premier League last season.

The 24-year-old arrives fresh from helping Villa end their 30-year trophy drought by winning the Europa League.

Rogers' friendship with Chelsea forward Cole Palmer from their time together in Manchester City's youth academy will help his acclimation, but Alonso must find a way to harness the talents of two players that operate in similar areas of the pitch.

Elliot Anderson (Manchester City)

The 23-year-old held the record as the most expensive British player for just a matter of days before being eclipsed by Morgan Rogers' move to Chelsea.

Signed from Nottingham Forest for £116 million, Anderson has the formidable task of replacing the prodigious output of Rodri and Bernardo Silva.

Spain World Cup winner Rodri has joined Barcelona, while Silva moved to Real Madrid, leaving a huge void in City's midfield that Anderson must fill for new boss Enzo Maresca to enjoy a successful debut season.

Anderson's astute reading of the game, smooth passing and composed demeanor earned the England international his big-money move and a massive pay rise.

Now he has to justify that huge expense as City try to dethrone champions Arsenal after two years without a Premier League title.

Bruno Guimaraes (Arsenal)

The Brazil midfielder was Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta's consolation prize after missing out on Morgan Rogers.

The Gunners declined to match Chelsea's record-breaking offer for Rogers and pivoted to Guimaraes, who makes the champions' already formidable squad even stronger.

Arsenal paid £75 million to sign the Newcastle captain and he will slot in alongside Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard in midfield.

"Since the first day he came in, it has been such a natural thing," Arsenal captain Odegaard said of Guimaraes' transition.

"Although we had some big fights with him in the past, he has just come in as a real natural part of the team.

"He can win the ball, he's a fighter. But he also has so much quality and is calm on the ball."

Sandro Tonali (Tottenham)

The Italy midfielder took just 10 minutes to agree to become Tottenham's record signing. Now he must show that rapid decision was the right move for himself and his new club.

With his relentless work ethic and quality in possession, the 26-year-old was a key figure in Newcastle's renaissance before their dip last season.

Looking to take his career to new heights, Tonali was quickly convinced to join Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi's overhaul of a club that are looking upwards after narrowly avoiding relegation in May.

"When you are happy after a 10-minute chat, everything is perfect," said Tonali, who acknowledged the size of his fee brings "a lot of pressure".

Jeremy Jacquet (Liverpool)

Jacquet has been signed to quell the mounting concern about a creaky defense that lacked the authority of Liverpool's title-winning unit in 2025.

Now 35, Virgil van Dijk no longer looks impregnable.

The Liverpool captain's struggles were exacerbated by the woes of his defensive colleagues last term.

Ibrahima Konate has joined Real Madrid, while Andrew Robertson moved to Tottenham.

Jacquet, 21, had to wait for his Anfield move after a £60 million switch from Rennes was agreed in the winter transfer window.

And Van Dijk acknowledged their nascent partnership at the heart of Liverpool's defense is a work in progress.

"It's pretty clear that you need to form a connection together and that takes a bit of time," he said.

"That's absolutely normal, but hopefully we can get that going as quickly as possible."
