Federico Chiesa said the arrival of new Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola would mark a fresh start after he spent much of last season on the sidelines under Arne Slot, as the Italy forward insisted his focus remained on Liverpool despite reports of interest from Italian clubs.

Chiesa, who scored in Liverpool's 4-2 pre-season win over Sunderland in Nashville on Saturday, made 36 appearances in all competitions last season but started only five matches as he struggled to establish himself in Slot's plans.

The 28-year-old was linked with a return to Serie A after last season, but said his priority was to work with Iraola, who succeeded Slot in June, and earn more opportunities at Anfield.

"It is always a fresh start at the beginning of the year. Maybe there have been too many fresh starts. But I don't care, I am trying to do my best for this new manager," Chiesa told reporters, according to Reuters.

"Last season under Arne Slot, I was trying to do my best. Last year I felt ready for a bigger role, then it depended on the coach whether he wanted me to play or not.

"Of course I wanted to play more but it is what it is. The gaffer had his gameplans, he took his decisions, I have nothing to say about that. It is football. This year, let us say it is a new chapter. There is a new manager and I have to focus on that."

Chiesa, who joined Liverpool in 2024 and is under contract until 2028, indicated in an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport in June that he could consider his options if he was unable to secure regular playing time.

However, the Italy international said he remained committed to Liverpool and was concentrating on his performances under Iraola.

"Right now, at the moment, I am happy here at Liverpool. I love the club, the fans, everything," he said.

"I am doing the best I can to have a chance here — and then we will see. At the minute, the only thing I am thinking about is Liverpool."

Venus and Serena Williams are slated to compete in women's doubles at the 2026 US Open after being granted a wildcard, tournament officials announced Wednesday.

The announcement by the US Tennis Association follows Serena Williams' dramatic return to Arthur Ashe stadium Tuesday when she and mixed double partner Carlos Alcaraz of Spain won their first match before losing in the quarterfinals.

Venus Williams had earlier been granted a USTA wildcard to compete in women's singles, an event Serena Williams is not participating in.

The sisters together have combined for 14 women's doubles Grand Slam titles, including two US Opens. They have also won three gold medals together at Olympics in women's doubles.

The sisters last competed together in New York in 2022 when they lost their opening match to the Czech team of Lucie Hradecka and Linda Noskova.

They dropped their opening match at the Cincinnati Open earlier this month.

The pair had been entered in Wimbledon earlier this summer, but withdrew after Serena suffered an injury in an opening round singles loss.

Former England forward Raheem Sterling has been charged with three offenses including dangerous driving after being involved in a collision on a highway, police said Wednesday.

The charges relate to an incident on May 28 when a Lamborghini was involved in a “single-vehicle collision” on the M3 in southern England, the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary said in a statement provided to The Associated Press.

The 31-year-old Sterling is accused of dangerous driving, possession of nitrous oxide — also known as laughing gas — for wrongful inhalation and failing to provide a sample for suspected alcohol or substance use, said the police force, which added that no other vehicles were involved in the collision and no injuries were reported.

Sterling is due to appear at a magistrates’ court on Sept. 15 for a hearing.

Sterling is currently without a club. He has played for a number of England's top teams — Liverpool, Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal — and was at Dutch club Feyenoord on a short-term deal last season.
