Few young players on the WTA Tour ‌have experienced the level of expectation and support Alexandra Eala has received since she earned a place on the elite women's circuit, and on Monday the Filipina showed what all the fuss is about by winning the Washington Open.

Eala capped her breakthrough run by rallying to defeat top seed Jessica Pegula 4-6 6-4 6-0 in a rain-interrupted final that began on Sunday, becoming the first woman from her country to claim a tour-level singles crown.

Along the way, the 21-year-old beat Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen, last year's winner Leylah Fernandez, second seed Elina Svitolina and four-times Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka, ‌victories which ‌will mark her out as a dangerous outsider for ‌the upcoming US Open.

"It's an incredible milestone for me," Eala told reporters.

"At the beginning of the week, there's no way I'd have thought that I'd be holding this trophy. These things creep up on you, and I hold these moments really close to me.

"It was a very steep hill. Coming into the tournament, I knew that the competition was super strong and my draw was quite tough. Every match was a different set of obstacles. ‌I'm really proud.

"I ended the tournament in ‌better shape than I started. Each match I kept improving and kept learning things ‌about myself. So it definitely gives me a lot of confidence.

"It's ‌really nice to see all the things I've been working on off court or during training being implemented in matches."

PROGRESS CLOSELY WATCHED

Eala's progress has been closely watched since her US Open junior triumph in 2022. Reaching the Eastbourne final last year ‌and making the fourth round at Wimbledon last month signaled steady improvement.

As Eala's reputation grew, so too did her following, with large groups of Filipino fans packing the stands at tournaments around the world to back a player many see as a pioneer for tennis in their country.

Her popularity was evident in the final of the WTA 500 event on Monday, with Eala's opponent Pegula impressed by the level of support on show.

"It's amazing that you guys showed up and again, to all the Filipino fans that came out, you are helping grow tennis around the world," she said.

"I appreciate that being a female athlete and being in tennis, we love to see that grow."

Eala can expect that support to continue at this week's Canadian Open in Toronto before she heads to New York for the US Open beginning on August 30.

Manchester United boss Michael Carrick said he expected to have to ride out a storm at some point this season after a dreadful start to the current campaign.

Carrick was appointed on a permanent basis after his successful temporary spell at the end of last season secured third place in the Premier League and a return to the Champions League.

But United have taken just four points from their opening four league games this season and were dumped out the League Cup in a 3-2 defeat by Brighton in midweek after blowing a two-goal lead at Old Trafford for the first time in 50 years.

"History tells you that any team that's successful goes through periods when you have to work through it, come through it and improve," Carrick said ahead of Sunday's trip to Fulham, according to AFP.

"We've had a small period, in recent time, when it hasn't been exactly what we want it to be.
"I was expecting a point when we would go through it, it was going to come. We had such a good spell last season, going into this season."

Former United and England midfielder Carrick also has reason to bemoan his side's luck in recent weeks.

United received a swift apology from referees' chiefs after Erling Haaland's winning goal for Manchester City last weekend was wrongly awarded because the VAR officials did not spot an offside against Enzo Fernandez in the build-up.

Carrick's men were also heading for three points at Everton last Sunday before until Toffees defender Ainsley Maitland-Niles produced a stunning strike into the top corner from long range.

"It is a week or two, the games haven't gone our way," added Carrick. "It's tiny margins in some of those games. We will work through it. Winning games is always the answer, it can cover up a lot of things at times as well.

"Sometimes it's the small disappointments that lead to something a bit bigger. It's part of coping and being at this great football club."

United could be boosted by the return of Luke Shaw from injury for the visit to Craven Cottage.

Carlos Baleba is also in contention to make his first appearance since a £70 million ($95 million) move from Brighton.

Trent Alexander-Arnold has the chance to prove a point after being recalled to the England squad, manager Thomas Tuchel said on Friday as he named his first selection since the World Cup.

England begin their Nations League campaign against world champions Spain at Wembley on September 26, the first of four matches they will play during the international break.

Real Madrid's Alexander-Arnold had not featured for England since June 2025 and returns after more than a year out of the international set-up, with Tuchel favoring other options at right back.

Brighton goalkeeper Jason Steele and Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott were also included in the squad and could make their England debuts. Scott trained with England before the World Cup but did not play in their warm-up friendlies.

Tuchel made 10 changes from the 26-man squad that travelled to the United States, Canada and Mexico. Cole Palmer and Lewis Hall return alongside Alexander-Arnold, while the experienced pair Jordan Henderson and John Stones miss out.

The German manager said that an improvement in Palmer's statistics and a positive start to the season from Alexander-Arnold were behind their return to the squad.

"I think Palmer has a point to prove. The same goes for Trent, he was never non-selectable for us. It's his chance to show it, to come to camp, to be the best version of himself," Tuchel told a press conference, according to Reuters.

Arsenal winger Noni Madueke was left out, with Tuchel selecting Liverpool's 18-year-old Rio Ngumoha, who will hope to earn his second England cap after making his debut in June against New Zealand.

After hosting Spain, England visit the Czech Republic and Croatia before playing the Czechs again at home. The remaining two fixtures of the group will be completed in November.

"The next match is against Spain, the reigning world champions, and we feel the gap is closing and we want to prove a point. The motivation cannot be higher," Tuchel added.
