US President Donald Trump on Thursday ordered Lake Ontario to be renamed "Lake America" as he escalated his trade war with Canada, sparking immediate pushback from Ottawa.

Trump stepped up his trolling of Canada by signing an executive order changing the name of the body of water on the border between the North American neighbors.

But Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney swiftly rejected Trump's move, saying it would be called Lake Ontario "then, now and always."

The volatile US leader's move comes after US-Canada trade talks collapsed at the last minute last week, prompting the two longtime allies to slap tit-for-tat tariffs on each other.

"We're going to be changing the name of Lake Ontario effective immediately to Lake America," the 80-year-old Republican told journalists as he signed the order at the White House.

Asked by an AFP reporter why he was targeting an ally for punishment instead of America's adversaries, Trump replied: "The Canadian officials have treated us very badly. They're nasty people."

Behind Trump's desk in the Oval Office were two maps -- one with the words "Lake America" in red over the lake, and the other with the header, "Making the Great Lakes Even Greater."

- Canada strikes back -

Lake Ontario is the smallest by surface area of the five Great Lakes, which straddle the border between the United States and Canada. It borders the Canadian province of Ontario and the US state of New York.

The name change mirrors Trump's unilateral altering of the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America in January 2025 -- a move Mexico has also rejected.

Carney retorted that the name of the lake was 400 years old -- predating the formation of both the United States and Canada -- and came from an Indigenous word meaning "the lake is beautiful, the lake is big."

"We know that America is changing," he said in a post on X.

"Canadians also know that naming reality means calling it Lake Ontario -- then, now and always."

Carney's defiance of Trump in recent days has won plaudits at home.

In Toronto, Canada's largest city which lies on the lake's northwestern shore, Canadians and Americans alike criticized Trump's move.

"Typical Trump. He's being a bully, he goads, he antagonizes," said Mark Weicker, who lives in Kitchener, west of Toronto.

"He's just trying to egg us on," chimed in Jake Marchuk, who was visiting from Alberta province.

- 'All we need is an ocean' -

Trump's executive order tells the US Department of the Interior to update references to the lake in the official geographical naming service within 30 days and ensure the federal government calls it "Lake America."

It justifies the name change by saying that the deepest part of the lake is on the American side, meaning that the United States "claims most of the Lake's volume."

Trump -- who faces low approval ratings amid the Iran war and economic woes at home, with crucial US midterm elections around the corner in November -- said he had been thinking about the name change "for a long time."

The US president even hinted at renaming oceans that border the United States.

"We have a gulf and we have a lake. Now all we need is an ocean. So, maybe we'll have to change the name of the Atlantic and/or the Pacific. Maybe we'll change them both," he said.

During his second presidential term, Trump has irked a series of allies with his outlandish territorial claims, including that Canada should become the 51st US state.

Trump has also laid claim to Greenland, an autonomous territory of NATO ally Denmark, and talked about making Venezuela a state following the US capture of its leader Nicolas Maduro.

In recent days, he has also said that he will make the Strait of Hormuz between Iran and Oman a US territory, despite the fact that the war with Tehran remains ongoing.

Russia launched waves of drones at Ukraine's capital Kyiv and surrounding region on Friday, damaging warehouses and homes in a second consecutive day of strikes Ukrainian officials said were an attempt to derail daily life for millions of residents.

At least one person was killed outside Kyiv, said Governor Tymur Tkachenko, adding that 14 warehouse premises, 16 homes and three blocks of apartment buildings had been damaged.

Frequent air-raid sirens blared throughout the city on Friday morning, a day after an hours-long missile and drone attack on Ukraine that targeted major retailers and consumer ‌logistics in Kyiv ‌and elsewhere.

Those strikes continued on Friday, destroying sorting centers ‌belonging to Ukraine's top private courier Nova Poshta near Kyiv and in the northern city of Sumy, the company said.

In the southeastern city of Zaporizhzhia, a Russian drone tore into major home-improvement store Epicenter, wounding at least four people, Governor Ivan Fedorov said on Friday.

GOAL IS TO 'PARALYSE' KYIV

Ukraine's state emergency service said Russia had attacked the Kyiv region 38 times during the past 24 hours, warning residents not to approach areas where firefighters ‌were still battling blazes.

Friday's attacks appeared aimed ‌at prolonging the snarl-up sparked by strikes a day earlier, which delayed trains across several ‌regions and left passengers stranded for long periods.

"The enemy is ‌launching small numbers of jet-powered UAVs in waves with the aim of paralyzing Kyiv," said Andriy Kovalenko, head of Ukraine's Center for Countering Disinformation (CCD), a branch of the National Security Council.

"The aim - to wear down the air defenses and the population."

Ukraine's ‌state railway said on Friday that delays were gradually decreasing, but that the effects of frequent strikes and air-raid alerts would be felt at least another day. Kyiv spent nearly 15 hours under air-raid alert on Thursday, according to Ukraine's foreign ministry.

NEW STRIKES ON RETAILERS, LOGISTICS

Russian forces also attacked a shopping center in the city of Kharkiv in northeastern Ukraine, said Mayor Ihor Terekhov, the second such attack there in two days.

Russia and Ukraine have stepped up strikes in recent weeks on consumer logistics and online retailers in a bid to dent each other's economies and weaken their respective war efforts.

Also on Friday, a Russian drone attack destroyed a warehouse in Kyiv region for a major book retailer that shipped thousands of titles per day, the company said.

Democratic Republic ‌of Congo on Thursday began vaccinating frontline health workers with a vaccine approved for a different Ebola species, as authorities seek to contain the country's largest and deadliest Ebola outbreak on record.

* Health Minister Samuel-Roger Kamba said Congo had received more than 50,000 doses of the Ervebo vaccine and would begin vaccinations in provinces affected by ‌the outbreak, ‌prioritizing health workers.

* Ervebo is licensed ‌against the Zaire species of Ebola and was used successfully in previous outbreaks. The current epidemic is caused by the Bundibugyo species, for which there is no approved vaccine or treatment.

* Early animal studies suggest Ervebo could provide some protection against Bundibugyo, and authorities ‌are using 20,000 of ‌the 70,000 doses allocated to Congo in ‌a clinical trial to assess its effectiveness ‌in humans.

* Several vaccines specifically targeting the Bundibugyo species are also under development, including candidates from the University of Oxford and the International ‌AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI).

* Vaccinations began in the northeastern city of Kisangani, the capital of Tshopo province, one of six provinces affected by the outbreak.

* Kamba said the campaign would first cover provinces surrounding Ituri, where the outbreak was first detected and remains most heavily concentrated, before progressively moving inward.

* The outbreak, declared on May 15, has infected 5,794 people and killed 2,786, according to the latest government figures, making it the world's second deadliest Ebola epidemic on record.

Typhoon Saudel made two landfalls on China's eastern coast on Friday morning, as authorities evacuated people and halted trains and ferries.

The typhoon made landfall at the city of Taizhou around 8:05 a.m. (0005 GMT) and the city of ‌Wenzhou around ‌9:10 a.m. (0110 GMT), according to ‌state media, marking the third typhoon to strike the eastern province of Zhejiang this year.

Saudel is set to bring heavy rain to Zhejiang and Fujian, a province on the southeast coast, with possibilities of local torrential ‌downpours, state-run ‌Xinhua news agency reported.

As the typhoon ‌moves inland, it could drench ‌provincial-level regions including Hubei, Guangxi and Yunnan.

The Wenzhou government ordered the evacuation of more than 820,000 people, while Taizhou ‌authorities suspended eight passenger ferry routes and identified 52,000 people needing evacuation, state broadcaster CCTV reported.

Rail operator China Railway Shanghai Group temporarily suspended some services on several lines in Zhejiang from Thursday to Friday, according to CCTV.

Fujian launched an emergency response to the typhoon on Thursday, halting projects along the coast and closing 57 passenger ferry routes.
