Riyadh Condemns Iran Attack on Saudi Vessel in Hormuz

Saudi Arabia condemned on Wednesday Iran for attacking a Saudi vessel, SIDR, as it sailed the Hormuz Strait and the resulting loss of life among the crew.

A Foreign Ministry statement said the Kingdom also condemns the Iranian attacks against Jordan, Bahrain and Kuwait.

Saudi Arabia “stands by the fraternal states and the measures they take to protect their security and sovereignty against any threat,” it added.

The Kingdom “underscored the need to stop the escalation and respect international marine lanes and their safety, as well as the global energy supplies.”

It urged “good neighborliness and respect for the sovereignty of nations, the UN Charter and international laws and norms.”

The Kingdom “called on all parties to restore calm, end the escalation, respect international law, return to the negotiations and turn to peaceful solutions.”

Saudi Arabia's national shipping company, Bahri, said on Wednesday that two Filipino seafarers were killed in a security incident involving its vessel SIDR as it transited through the Strait of Hormuz on August 31.

The company said in a statement that it continues to maintain constant communication with the vessel and is coordinating with the relevant authorities while monitoring developments in the incident.

Bahri emphasized that the safety of its crew members, protection of the marine environment, and safe management of its vessels remain its top priorities, at a time when shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz is experiencing disruptions and escalating security risks.

SIDR was among two tankers involved in separate incidents occurring in close succession as they passed near the Strait of Hormuz, according to maritime sources.

Jordan, Kuwait and Bahrain said they intercepted new Iranian attacks overnight, while Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps said early on Wednesday that it had launched an attack on US bases in Iraq's Erbil with drones and missiles, according to Iranian state media.

Jordan said it intercepted and destroyed 10 ballistic missiles launched from Iran. Three other missiles fell in remote areas, the official Jordan News Agency (Petra) reported early Wednesday. No casualties were reported.

The Kuwaiti military also said its air defenses intercepted “hostile drone attacks” coming from Iran. It added that the explosions heard across the Gulf state were caused by the interception operations. Bahrain said its air defense systems intercepted and destroyed Iranian drones over the kingdom.

Iran had earlier said it targeted US military bases in Jordan in response to previous US attacks. Iran had already attacked US bases in Jordan.

Iranian media outlets reported attacks on a US base in Bahrain. No official confirmation was made.

On Tuesday, the United States and Iran said they had carried out new attacks against each other. US President Donald Trump said the United States had again targeted Iranian sites near the Strait of Hormuz.

In a statement carried by state media, Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps said it had launched a “combined missile and drone attack” on US bases in Erbil, destroying a maintenance facility and warehouses containing technical equipment belonging to the US military.

The statement added: “Ground forces fighters also set fire to the base's fuel tanks and killed a number of attackers”.

Secretary-General of the Islamic Military Counter Terrorism Coalition (IMCTC) Major General Mohammed bin Saeed Al-Moghedi held on Tuesday a series of high-level meetings in London with officials from the UK Home Office and the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office.

Discussions focused on strengthening cooperation in combating terrorism and extremism, addressing escalating threats in the digital sphere, and supporting countries' capabilities to counter terrorist organizations and fortify societies ideologically.

Al-Moghedi met with Director, Counter Terrorism, Homeland Security Group, at the UK Home Office Jemima Murray.

They discussed the growing dangers of online extremism and rapid transformations in the digital environment, which extremist groups and organizations exploit to spread their ideology, recruit individuals, and influence thoughts and beliefs.

During his visit to London, Al-Moghedi also met with a high-level delegation from the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, including Head of the UK's Counter Daesh Communications Cell Martyn Warr and other officials.

During the meetings, the secretary-general reviewed the IMCTC's areas of work in combating terrorism and the specialized programs and initiatives it implements to support member states and build their capabilities according to their needs and the challenges they face.

He stressed the importance of international partnerships and the integration of efforts in confronting terrorism, particularly considering the evolving tactics of extremist organizations and their increasing use of technology and digital platforms for recruitment and the dissemination of extremist ideologies.

The meetings are part of the IMCTC's efforts to expand its international partnerships and strengthen cooperation with institutions and entities concerned with combating terrorism, thereby supporting its mission to assist member states, develop their capabilities, and enhance regional and international security and stability.
