Chinese President Xi Jinping unveiled on Sunday initiatives in areas ranging from AI to trade to deepen cooperation among the "Greater BRICS" emerging economies, as Beijing seeks to weld the grouping into a practical platform for Global South development.

Cooperation in areas from politics and security to economics and finance are the main focus areas of the grouping, with 2026 chair India and 2027 chair China seeking wider partnership to boost its global clout.

The success of the "Greater BRICS Initiative" depends on laying a solid foundation for pragmatic cooperation, Xi told the leaders' annual summit in New Delhi, the ‌official Xinhua news agency ‌said.

"Greater BRICS" nations should further cooperate, maintain the stability of industrial ‌and supply chains, and cultivate an integrated market, Xi told the summit's closing session.

China will take the lead in establishing a BRICS AI Open Source Zone to promote cooperation on large language models, AI training and an open AI ecosystem, Xi added.

He also proposed a BRICS Special Economic Zone partnership and said China would host a BRICS Service Trade Forum next year to boost trade and investment ties.

EXPANDED ROLE FOR 'GREATER BRICS' GROUPING

BRICS has expanded to include Iran, Indonesia, Egypt, Ethiopia and the United Arab Emirates beyond an original membership of Brazil, Russia, India, China and ‌South Africa two decades ago that aimed to transform a ‌world order dominated by the United States.

In addition, 10 partner countries span emerging economies across Asia, Africa, ‌Latin America and the Middle East, broadening its reach across the Global South.

China and Russia ‌sometimes refer to this larger bloc as "Greater BRICS".

BRICS HELPS CREATE FAIRER WORLD ORDER, PUTIN SAYS

The benefits of solutions developed within BRICS should not stay limited to BRICS alone, but should be made adaptable and accessible to meet the needs of the Global South, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in ‌remarks earlier.

Russian President Vladimir Putin called BRICS a powerful driving force towards creating a new, fairer and multipolar world order, urging its members to find ways to combine the competitive advantages of their individual economies.

The summit comes amid renewed fighting in the Gulf region, with tit-for-tat attacks by the United States and Iran and Iran-backed Houthis widening the conflict by launching attacks on Saudi Arabia.

The weekend summit expressed deep concern over the continued escalation of tension in the Middle East and urged the exercise of maximum restraint.

Three-way negotiations with Ukraine and the United States on ending Europe's worst conflict since World War II could take place in October, the Kremlin said on Sunday, according to Russian agencies.

"We do not rule out such a possibility; we are talking about the foreseeable future," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told journalists, cited by Russia's Ria and Tass news agencies.

The leaders of France and Canada will next week visit France's North Atlantic territory of Saint-Pierre-and-Miquelon to underscore their support for national borders in the face of Donald Trump's territorial ambitions, Paris said Sunday.

The US president on Monday posted an image to social media with a map of North America in which Canada, Greenland and Mexico, much of central America and the Caribbean, as well as Iceland, were colored in with the US flag.

The image also encompassed several French overseas territories, such as Saint-Pierre-and-Miquelon, Guadeloupe and Martinique.

French President Emmanuel Macron and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney will make a symbolic visit to Saint-Pierre-and-Miquelon to underscore that their countries share "the same values of freedom, democracy, the rule of law and respect for the sovereignty of nations", the Elysee said.

Macron was set to visit the territory on September 19-21, with Carney joining the French leader on September 20.

"In a world marked by the return of power politics, geopolitical tensions and new forms of dependency, France and Canada share a common ambition: to work together, and with all countries that share these values, to strengthen their capacity to make decisions and act independently," the Elysee said.

The three islands of the archipelago of Saint Pierre and Miquelon, located about 20 kilometers (12 miles) off Canada's Atlantic coast, is home to around 6,000 people.

Macron will stop there on his way to New York, where he is due to attend the UN General Assembly.

It would be the first official visit by a Canadian prime minister to the archipelago, the French presidency said.

The territory has previously been the scene of tensions with the United States during World War II, when France was under German occupation.

In 1941, General Charles de Gaulle's Free French forces seized Saint-Pierre and Miquelon from the collaborationist Vichy regime, despite opposition from US President Franklin D. Roosevelt's administration, which had sought to maintain existing arrangements with Marshal Philippe Petain's government.

The last visit by a French president to the strategically located islands, some 4,300 kilometers from mainland France, was by Francois Hollande in 2014.

Macron is also set to address climate change affecting the territory.

The village of Miquelon has started moving inland to escape the growing threat of sea-level rise, in what is widely regarded as France's first climate-driven community relocation.

A Russian drone struck near the Ukrainian-Polish border in the small town of Yahodyn overnight, Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said on Sunday.

The minister corrected his earlier statement saying the drone struck on the border crossing at Yahodyn.

"Russia's barbaric strikes at ‌the Ukraine-Poland ‌border in Yahodyn are not ‌just a continuation of its attacks on our state borders," Sybiha said on X.

"This is Putin's terror "knocking" directly on the doors of the EU and NATO. Russian barbarians are at your gate, dear partners," he added.

Polish border guard ‌spokeswoman told ‌Reuters that the site of the attack was ‌800 meters (less than a mile) ‌from the Polish border, and the border crossing was temporarily closed during the attack.

In a separate statement, Ukrainian Railways, Ukrzaliznytsia, said ‌that in another region bordering Poland, Volyn, a drone attacked the locomotive of a passenger train just 2 km (1.2 miles) from the Polish border.

The company said no one was injured.

Ukraine operates several border crossings with Poland, through which a significant proportion of the military and humanitarian aid from its allies is delivered to the country.
