Some supermarket shelves and gas station pumps were empty in the southern city of Naples on Tuesday due to a weeklong protest by truck drivers against the high cost of diesel driven up by the Iran war.

Protesters blocked the loading and unloading of fresh food and other goods at supermarket distribution warehouses near Naples on Monday, Sky TG24 reported. The truckers are adding their voices to demonstrations that have spread across Europe as the war disrupts economies, The Associated Press said.

One supermarket in the city posted a note on empty shelves apologizing that “some products may be temporarily unavailable or available in a reduced range" due to the truckers' strike.

Shortages of fresh pasta, packaged cheeses and meats as well as produce have been reported in Sicily, partly due to stockpiling by shoppers. Partially empty supermarket shelves were also reported in the southern regions of Calabria and Puglia.

Transport Minister Matteo Salvini met Tuesday with national trucking associations to help the truckers cope, promising tax credits to offset soaring diesel prices and funds to modernize trucking fees.

Diesel prices are roughly a third higher than before the Iran war, despite government-backed efforts to curb pump prices. A temporary diesel tax discount expired earlier this month.

The president of the Unatras group of trucking associations, Paolo Uggè, said Salvini promised that payments would begin Wednesday and pledged legislation to address operating costs, the news agency LaPresse reported. Another meeting was set for next week.

Elon Musk ordered a reduction in Starshield services for Ukraine, the Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday, after the tech billionaire said any limits on the SpaceX-operated communications system would ultimately have come from the president.

Musk capped the speed at which Ukrainian equipment could connect to the system, making some of Kyiv's drones useless, the Journal reported, citing anonymous US officials and people familiar with the matter.

Kyiv has accused Washington of deliberately slowing speeds at which Starshield can be used effectively -- a charge denied last week by US President Donald Trump.

Musk had previously said that "any limits on speed or usage" of Starshield systems were "decided by the US military and ultimately POTUS," referring to Trump.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Wednesday that Washington had no prior knowledge of the slowdown.

"The president has nothing to do with the decisions that are made by Starlink and Starshield and by Mr. Musk," Rubio said during his trip to India.

"That's a private company; the president doesn't run that company and can't direct that company to do anything... I'm telling you, there was no foreknowledge."

On Tuesday, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said that the Pentagon had not directed any changes to Starshield, saying: "We haven't pulled anything back."

"Nothing's changed from our view. We haven't made any directives or anything like that," he said.

Trump said last week he did not request any curbs to Starshield, adding: "It wasn't me. And I don't think it was Elon."

Kyiv last week reported restrictions to the service, which it sees as crucial to fending off Moscow's invasion, shortly after Trump criticized Ukraine and urged it to stop targeting Russian oil refineries.

Ukraine uses Starshield, Starlink's military-grade satellite service, for its battlefield communications, mid-range strikes on Russia-occupied territory, and its interceptor drones. It also uses SpaceX's parallel Starlink civilian satellite system.

Relations between Washington and Kyiv have been increasingly tense in recent days, with Trump calling for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to be replaced after he criticized a US deal allowing more Russian diesel into global markets.

President ‌Donald Trump's administration has revoked over 300,000 US visas during his second term, the State Department said on Tuesday as the federal government continues its sweeping immigration crackdown.

The number showed an acceleration in the pace of visa revocations in recent weeks.

In an update issued on August 10, the State Department had put the number of visa revocations since Trump's current term began in January 2025 at ‌over 175,000, Reuters reported.

Trump ‌says his immigration crackdown and deportation ‌drive aim to improve domestic security. Rights advocates say the crackdown has violated due process and free speech rights and has created an unsafe environment, particularly for ethnic minorities, who have raised concerns about racial profiling.

In announcing the latest number on X, State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott said the Trump administration "has revoked more ‌visas at a faster ‌pace than any administration in history."

Pigott said the administration ‌had "zero tolerance for foreigners here on visas who break ‌the law, commit fraud, or undermine our national security."

Among visa revocations particularly condemned by rights advocates are those of pro-Palestinian foreign protesters demonstrating against US ally Israel's attacks ‌on Gaza and of foreigners over their social media comments about conservative commentator Charlie Kirk's assassination.

In addition to attempts to deport foreign protesters, the Trump administration has enforced tightened social media screening of immigrants and visa applicants.

Rights advocates say the government has deployed national security reasons to target critics and used isolated cases of fraud to broadly target immigrant communities such as the Somali American community in Minnesota.

While Trump campaigned in 2024 on stopping illegal immigration, his administration has also made legal immigration more difficult — for example by imposing expensive fees for certain work visas.
