Andoni Iraola became the latest coach from the Basque region to take charge of a Premier League team after being hired by Bournemouth on Monday, hours after Gary O'Neil was fired despite keeping the team up last season with four matches to spare.

Iraola joined after his contract expired at Spanish club Rayo Vallecano, which finished in 11th place in La Liga last season in his third year there.

Rayo had a high-energy, heavy-pressing style under Iraola, who follows fellow Basque coaches Mikel Arteta, Julen Lopetegui and Unai Emery to England's top division.

"He was highly sought after by other clubs across the continent, and his style of play has been an important factor in making this decision," said Bournemouth owner Bill Foley, an American who bought Bournemouth in December. "His achievements in Spain have certainly been very impressive, and we’re confident that he is the right man to lead our next chapter."

Foley said it was a "difficult decision" to part company with O'Neil but that "it has been made with great consideration to best position ourselves ahead of the coming season."

O'Neil took charge of Bournemouth early last season following the departure of Scott Parker after a 9-0 loss at Liverpool, which cemented the team's status as a favorite for relegation.

Initially hired on an interim basis, O'Neil was given the job on a full-time basis in November and helped Bournemouth stay up against the odds in its first season back in England's top division.

Foley, who fronts the Black Knight Football and Entertainment consortium that also owns the NHL champion Vegas Golden Knights, said a change of manager was part of the club's plans that are in place "for long-term success," including the development of a state-of-the-art training facility and upgrades to our stadium.

"We have also identified a number of significant targets in the transfer market this summer and believe this change in direction will provide us with the best platform from which to build," Foley said. "Gary will go on to have a long career as a head coach or manager, but we feel that, at this moment in time, a change is in the best interests of this football club."

The team finished last season in 15th place in the 20-team Premier League.

According to stats supplier Opta, only Bayern Munich forced more high turnovers that produced a shot than Iraola’s Rayo Vallecano last season.

Liam Lawson will be the partner for world champion Max Verstappen at Red Bull for the 2025 season, the Formula 1 team said on Thursday.

Lawson, a New Zealander, replaces Sergio Perez, who was dropped on Wednesday after months of poor results.

Red Bull announced on Wednesday the termination of Perez's contract two years early, and said a replacement will be announced “in due course.”

Nicknamed “Checo,” Perez started the 2024 season with four podium finishes from the first five races, but he wasn't in the top three since. His last race finish higher than sixth was in May. Verstappen won nine races and his fourth consecutive title this year.

The last time there was such a gulf in results between an F1 champion and the team’s other driver in F1 was in 1994, when Verstappen’s father Jos was dropped before the end of the season as Michael Schumacher won the title with Benetton.

“Driving for Red Bull has been an unforgettable experience and I’ll always cherish the successes we achieved together,” Perez said in a team statement.

“We broke records, reached remarkable milestones, and I’ve had the privilege of meeting so many incredible people along the way," he added.

"A special thank you to the fans around the world, and especially to the Mexican fans for your unwavering support every day. We’ll meet again soon. And remember... Never give up."
