Atletico Madrid got the better of Real Madrid this time, beating its crosstown rival 4-2 in extra time Thursday to reach the quarterfinals of the Copa del Rey.

Antoine Griezmann and Rodrigo Riquelme scored after a 2-2 draw in regulation to send Atletico to the last eight less than a week after it lost to Madrid in the semifinals of the Spanish Super Cup in Saudi Arabia.

Atletico thrived again at home, where it also beat Madrid in the first Spanish league derby of the season in September in what had been its rival’s only loss this season. Atletico is unbeaten in 25 consecutive matches at its Metropolitano stadium in all competitions, with two draws since a 1-0 league defeat to Barcelona in January 2023.

Defending champion Madrid eliminated Atletico in the Copa quarterfinals last season, winning 3-1 in extra time at home. The city rivals will play again on Feb. 4 — the third meeting in less than a month — in the Spanish league at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium. Madrid won 5-3 in extra time in the Super Cup semifinals last Wednesday.

Griezmann secured Atletico's win this time with a beautiful goal after making a run through the right side of the area. The France international, Atletico's all-time top scorer with 175 goals, got past Madrid forward Vinícius Júnior before finding the top corner from a tight angle.

“It was an amazing goal, probably one of his best,” Madrid coach Diego Simeone said. “We played a very good match and the players gave everything they had against a top opponent. It was a great match.”

Riquelme sealed Atletico's win from inside the area on a breakaway in the 119th after an assist by Memphis Depay.

Atletico had opened the scoring with a goal from close range by Samuel Lino after Madrid defender Antonio Rüdiger deflected the ball backward into the area in the 39th. Madrid equalized after a rare mistake by Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak, who punched the ball into his own net while trying to clear a cross.

Álvaro Morata put Atletico ahead again from close range in the 57th after Madrid goalkeeper Andriy Lunin failed to fully clear a cross. The ball bounced off Rüdiger and went toward Morata in front of an open net.

Striker Joselu, who came on for Rodrygo in the 80th, equalized with a header in the 82nd after a cross by Jude Bellingham. Morata had missed a clear chance in a one-on-one situation with Lunin just moments earlier.

Brahim Díaz thought he had scored an equalizer late in extra time but the goal was disallowed because of an offside by Bellingham.

Bellingham hit the crossbar early in the first half, and Rodrygo struck the woodwork in the second.

Madrid went on to win the Spanish Super Cup 4-1 in the final against Barcelona on Sunday, but there was no guard of honor by Atletico before the match at the Metropolitano.

There was a report by The Athletic and some Spanish media that some Atletico fans called Vinícius a monkey before the game. The Brazil international had been racially abused by Atletico fans before other derbies, including by some who hanged an effigy of the player off a highway bridge last year.

Simeone exchanged a few heated words with Vinícius after the end of regulation. The coach appeared to be upset with Vinícius because of his celebration after Joselu’s goal. Vinícius apparently also got into a spat with one of the ball boys at the Metropolitano.

“It was a very competitive match, he was involved in many duels, and sometimes you are not able to keep your cool,” Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti said about Vinícius. “I think it's understandable.”

Ancelotti’s Madrid had come into the game on an unbeaten run of 21 matches in all competitions, with 17 wins and four draws.

BARCELONA ADVANCES Barcelona picked up the pace in the second half to beat third-division club Unionistas 3-1 in its round-of-16 match.

It will be the second straight last-eight appearance for the Catalan club, which arrived under pressure after losing the Spanish Super Cup final to Madrid.

After being held 1-1 at halftime, Barcelona improved in the second half to secure the victory with goals by Jules Koundé and Alejandro Balde.

The hosts had taken the lead with a beautiful one-timer by Álvaro Gómez in the 31st minute before Ferran Torres equalized for Barcelona on a breakaway in the 45th. Koundé scored with a long-range shot in the 69th and Balde sealed the victory with a strike from a tight angle in the 73rd.

“After a tough loss in the Super Cup we needed to rebound,” Koundé said. “It wasn't easy, they have a good team and were very motivated.”

Unionistas had a few chances to move closer toward the end, but Barcelona goalkeeper Iñaki Peña made some good saves to maintain the comfortable lead at the 5,000-capacity Reina Sofia Stadium.

Barcelona defender Pau Cubarsí, 16, made his first-team debut by entering the match after halftime to replace Andreas Christensen.

Unionistas had eliminated Villarreal on penalties in the previous round.

Ousmane Dembele missed a penalty but later scored as Paris Saint-Germain produced a fightback to win 3-1 away at Strasbourg on Saturday and go to the top of the French Ligue 1 table.

PSG were trailing to an early goal by United States star Giovanni Reyna for Strasbourg at the Stade de la Meinau, and last year's Ballon d'Or winner Dembele came off the bench before he put a penalty wide in the 72nd minute.

But Dembele made amends in style, first by setting up Illia Zabarnyi to equalize in the 78th minute and then by putting the reigning French and European champions ahead with five minutes to go.

He then played a part in setting up Desire Doue for PSG's third in stoppage time, as Luis Enrique's men made it four straight Ligue 1 wins, and six on the bounce including the Champions League.

"I told him: 'If you play for 25 minutes and you give an assist and score a goal, you don't need to play any longer. That is enough'," Luis Enrique said of Dembele, one of a host of PSG players rested from the starting line-up in between key European games against Manchester City and Barcelona.

"Ousmane and the other players are not machines and they will not always be at their best. There are games over the course of a season where you are not at your best level because that is normal," added Luis Enrique.

After failing to win any of their first three domestic league matches this season, PSG are up to 14 points from seven games and are therefore top of the standings on goals scored from Lille as well as Monaco, before the principality club visit Lorient on Sunday.

Lille drew 1-1 with Brest, while Rennes, Paris FC and Lyon all have the opportunity to go back above PSG when they play on Sunday.

This game, one of PSG's toughest domestic tests of the season, fell awkwardly just three days after their 4-2 Champions League victory at City and three days before they host Barcelona.

- Spot-kick woe -

True to form, Luis Enrique therefore made sweeping changes with eight in total from the City game. Dembele was one of those relegated to the bench here with an eye on the meeting with Barcelona, his former side.

Strasbourg sought to take advantage and went in front on 17 minutes when Reyna received a Gessime Yassine pass just inside the area, turned and beat Matvey Safonov low at the goalkeeper's near post.

The visitors were grateful to Safonov for a superb save to deny Conrad Harder just after half-time, before Luis Enrique sent on some of the cavalry, including Dembele and Doue.

They won a penalty after a VAR check confirmed that a Doue shot had hit the arm of Pape Demba Diop, but Dembele -- who scored a penalty in May's Champions League final win over Arsenal -- put his spot-kick wide. Three different PSG players have now missed penalties in their last three games.

"We have lots of players who can take them but it is true that we don't have one specialist," said Luis Enrique.

However, Dembele crossed from the right for Ukraine defender Zabarnyi to equalize with a cushioned close-range finish, and then controlled on the edge of the box before firing in to make it 2-1.

That was his first Ligue 1 goal this season to go with three in the Champions League, and Dembele -- who is nominated again for this year's Ballon d'Or -- then brought down a long Safonov kick before finding Ferran Torres who set up Doue to seal the win.

Lille were looking to bounce back from a 3-0 Champions League loss at Arsenal when they entertained Brest, but they needed a penalty from 40-year-old Olivier Giroud to get a 1-1 draw.

Lens, France's other Champions League representative, won 3-1 away at Troyes.

The ongoing financial scandal enveloping Manchester City isn’t affecting the team’s results in the Premier League.

Or Erling Haaland’s appetite for scoring goals.

Playing in front of fans waving inflatable bananas, City became only the third team to open a Premier League season with seven straight wins by beating Ipswich 3-2 at home on Saturday. Haaland netted twice to move to a competition-high eight goals for a campaign being played under a cloud of controversy.

It made it back-to-back victories in the league for City — either side of a 4-2 loss to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League — since being found guilty of large-scale financial wrongdoing in the Premier League for nearly a decade. The seismic verdict threatens the club’s place in England’s lucrative top flight, though City continues to protest its innocence and has appealed.

City manager Enzo Maresca believes the saga has galvanized the squad and the defiance among the fanbase continued, with many supporters bringing along inflatable bananas — a throwback to an item that fans brought to games in the 1980s for fun amid tough times for the team — for Ipswich’s visit. They also jeered the Premier League anthem before kickoff.

“The fans, the club, the players — we are all together in this journey,” Maresca said of City's defiance in troubled times.

“Going down with the City,” was the chant by some home fans in the first half at Etihad Stadium as they watched their team extend their lead in the league to six points. Second-place Arsenal will visit Nottingham Forest on Sunday.

Hobbling Haaland

Haaland and second-half substitute Antoine Semenyo were seen hobbling off the field at the end of the game, which finished with Ipswich grabbing its second goal in stoppage time and piling on the pressure in the final minutes.

Maresca said Haaland, who had taken a blow to the foot late in the match, wasn't worried.

“We will see," Maresca said. "I asked him and he said he was OK, so hopefully it is nothing serious.”

Maresca added that Semenyo’s injury might be more serious.

Perfect seven

Maresca became the first manager to win his first seven Premier League games in charge of a team.

“I didn't expect to win seven out of seven," said Maresca, who replaced Pep Guardiola in the offseason, "but we are working well, working good.”

Chelsea (in 2005) and Liverpool (in 2019) are the other teams to win at least their first seven games of a Premier League season — and they both went on to win the title.

Liverpool rallies to beat Brentford but gets more injuries

Liverpool came from behind to win 2-1 at nine-man Brentford but lost two more players to injury in a busy stretch of fixtures.

Trailing to Keane Lewis-Potter's 44th-minute header, Liverpool found itself with a man advantage when Brentford midfielder Yehor Yarmoliuk was shown a red card in first-half stoppage time for aiming a head-butt at Jeremy Jacquet.

Liverpool took advantage, with Victor Munoz and Alexander Isak scoring after the break to consign Brentford to its first league defeat this season.

Vitaly Janelt became the second Brentford player sent off after getting a second yellow card in second-half stoppage time.

Isak has just returned from an injury sustained on international duty with Sweden but two players are back on the treatment table, with Dominik Szoboszlai and Jeremie Frimpong — a halftime substitute — forced off with injuries.

Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola said Szoboszlai’s problem was the reoccurrence of the hamstring injury he got while playing for Hungary in the recent international break.

Martinez head injury in Chelsea win

Pedro Neto scored early and late in the second half to lead Chelsea to a 2-0 win at Everton in a match marred by a serious-looking head injury to Chelsea goalkeeper Emi Martinez.

Neto slotted home the opening goal 44 seconds after the resumption and then added the second in the 90th minute after pouncing on the loose ball following a blocked free kick.

Chelsea handed Everton a first loss of the season after seven rounds, keeping a first clean sheet in nine months in the process.

Martinez was conscious and in the hospital, Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso said, after receiving 10 minutes of treatment on the field and then being carried off on a stretcher following a head-on-head collision with Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite at a free kick.

Manzambi thriving for Villa

Johan Manzambi could easily have joined Newcastle in the offseason. On Saturday, he grabbed the winner against the team for Aston Villa.

The 21-year-old Switzerland midfielder scored for the third time in four games to seal Villa’s 1-0 victory at St. James’ Park.

It would have been a painful sight for Newcastle, which reached an agreement with Freiburg to sign Manzambi after his impressive World Cup performances but not with the player himself. Now he’s thriving for Villa.

Fulham win eases pressure on Arbeloa Fulham eased the pressure on manager Alvaro Arbeloa by beating Hull 1-0 for its first league win of the season.

Alex Iwobi scored the goal in the 33rd minute, helping Fulham climb off the bottom of the table — much to the relief of Arbeloa, the former Real Madrid coach who arrived in the offseason.

Emiliano Martinez has undergone surgery following his collision with Everton's Jarrad Branthwaite, the Chelsea goalkeeper said on Sunday, after his club's 2-0 Premier League victory.

Pedro Neto's double on Saturday at the Hill Dickinson Stadium ended Everton's unbeaten start to the league season, but Chelsea's victory was overshadowed by the lengthy injury stoppage in the second half.

Martinez and Branthwaite came together when Everton's Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall whipped ‌a free kick ‌into the box and, although the ‌defender was back on his feet after treatment, the Argentina goalkeeper required treatment from paramedics.

The 34-year-old was eventually strapped to a stretcher and carried off the field before being taken to hospital with a concussion, as Argentine media reported he had suffered a jaw injury in the collision.

Martinez, wearing a hospital gown, posted on social media early on Sunday: "Thanks to everyone for ‌the messages. The operation went ‌well.

"The most important thing is that we won, and kept a ‌clean sheet. In a few weeks we'll be back."

Martinez's ‌injury forced Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso to give Mike Penders his Premier League debut, and the 21-year-old keeper helped Chelsea keep their first clean sheet in the league since January.

Penders, a Belgian youth ‌international, will likely have to step in until Martinez is cleared to return to training.

Chelsea host Tottenham Hotspur in the league next Saturday followed by a League Cup fourth-round game at Liverpool on October 28 and a home Premier League match against Manchester United three days later.

"Mike has personality. He's brave and we have full trust with him. He did well," Alonso told reporters.

"He played in the cup games and whenever he's needed, like the other players whenever they are needed they can perform.

"It's all about the squad, that all the players feel important and can have their moment whenever they are needed, and that's very positive."
