Lionel Messi scored after coming off the bench but his Inter Miami were held to a 2-2 draw by the Colorado Rapids in Major League Soccer on Saturday.

The Argentine had been out of action for almost a month with a hamstring injury, missing the last four games, but was named among the substitutes for the home game.

Messi missed Wednesday's 2-1 home defeat to Mexico's Monterrey in the CONCACAF Champions Cup quarter-final and with the return game on Wednesday, Inter coach Gerard Martino rotated his squad.

Martino fielded a heavily second-string line-up with Messi's former Barcelona team-mates Luis Suarez, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba also on the bench, AFP reported.

The youthful starting XI looked comfortable, without threatening too often, but fell behind on the stroke of half-time when defender Ryan Sailor lunged into a rash challenge in the box on Colorado's French forward Kevin Cabral.

The Rapids' Brazilian forward Rafael Navarro drilled home the penalty to give Colorado a 1-0 lead at the break.

Messi was brought on after the interval and made an instant impact.

After just 12 minutes on the field, the Argentine World Cup-winner brought Miami level firing home off the inside of the post after meeting Franco Negri's low cross from the left.

Busquets was then introduced and Miami took the lead on the hour -- Messi bursting forward from midfield, feeding David Ruiz down the right and his cross was coolly converted by debutant Leonardo Afonso.

Messi then brought a fine save out of Colorado's former Manchester City goalkeeper Zack Steffen and then from a tight angle at the back post, struck the woodwork.

But the third goal never arrived and Miami paid the price in the 88th minute when Calvin Harris lead a counter-attack down the right and found Cole Bassett who slotted home the equaliser.

While Miami were disappointed to have the let two points slip from their grasp, the return to the field of Messi was a boost for Martino ahead of the trip to Monterrey.

"What Leo did is the usual for him, what he provokes in our team, in his teammates, in the people. The most important thing is that he felt comfortable, he felt good, he felt loose," said the coach.

"This will help him to be more confident, especially with regard to the injury, for the second leg in Monterrey," he added.

But Martino was disappointed with the way his team had given up the late goal.

"It is a shame to give up two points (...) but I think we continue to make mistakes that really make us drop points along the way.

"In the 87th minute, leading 2-1, to be caught on the counterattack is not usual, it is typical of not having a good reading of the match, of the moment, of not having people looking in front of them, we surely struggle with that," he said.

In the Los Angeles derby -- LAFC beat the LA Galaxy 2-1 after a controversial penalty from Denis Bouanga.

Timothy Tillman put LAFC in front in the fourth minute, bundling the ball home from close range after a corner.

The Galaxy pulled level in the 29th minute through Argentine Julian Aude who saw a shot strike the post but pounced on the rebound, had another shot blocked before drilling home at the third attempt.

But the outcome was decided by a questionable penalty award when French-born forward Bouanga went down under challenge from the Galaxy's Japanese defender Miki Yamane.

Bouanga looked to have dragged his own foot and then drawn some slight contact and the VAR sent referee Jon Freemon to the pitchside monitor but surprisingly he opted to stick with his decision.

Bouanga, last season's top scorer in MLS, converted the spot kick to earn LAFC the three points.

Defending champions Columbus Crew had to battle back with 10 men to salvage a 1-1 draw at home to D.C. United.

Belgian forward Christian Benteke put D.C. ahead in the 61st minute with a close range finish before the Crew's Colombian striker Cucho Hernandez, returning after a three-match absence, was sent off for lashing out at Christopher McVey.

But three minutes from the end, Aidan Morris levelled for Columbus with a thundering strike from 25 yards out.

Tottenham Hotspur manager Roberto de Zerbi is convinced that his team will score a lot more goals and pick up wins once they finally click, despite a 3-1 loss to Liverpool in the League Cup on Tuesday which left them winless in four straight games.

The North London side finished just two points above the relegation zone last season and are winless in the new Premier League campaign with just two points from four games.

"We are suffering because the results are our life. If we lose, we are sorry, we are sad, we are disappointed, we are frustrated," De Zerbi told Spurs' official website after the third-round defeat.

"It's tough. But it's the first moment, the first part of this new project,” Reuters quoted him as saying.

De Zerbi took over in March and has been backed in the transfer market, the club spending more than £300 million ($404 million) to bring in Sandro Tonali, Mateus Fernandes, Savio, Omar Marmoush and Mykhailo Mudryk.

"I think when we make the click ... but the click is not mentality, because today we showed the right mentality, the right behavior and we played until the end of the game," the manager added.

"I think we are going to win many games and score many goals.”

Spurs next face Aston Villa in the league on Saturday.

Newly-crowned US Open champion Alexander Zverev makes a quick return to action this weekend as he bids to help Germany reach the Davis Cup Finals, while American Ben Shelton hopes to put his Flushing Meadows final defeat behind him.

World number two Zverev downed Shelton in four sets on Sunday to continue a dream season after ending his long wait to win a Grand Slam title at the French Open in June.

Leading Germany to a first Davis Cup crown since 1993 would cap off his year in style, AFP reported.

But to reach November's eight-team Finals, the Germans must first get through a second-round qualifying tie against Croatia in Halle on Saturday and Sunday.

The seven qualifiers will be decided this week, joining hosts and three-time defending champions Italy in Bologna in two months' time.

Zverev admitted that his coaching staff were not keen on him being back on court so quickly.

"I really, really would like to play in the Davis Cup. Everyone around me is trying to talk me out of it," he said after lifting the US Open trophy, which he initially did not realize he had won after match point.

Michael Kohlmann's Germany will be strong favorites to get the better of a Croatia team including 37-year-old Marin Cilic and youngster Dino Prizmic.

The Croatians have not reached the Finals since a group-stage exit in 2023, when there were still 16 teams taking part.

"Now the goal is to stand our ground against a strong opponent, together with the team and the fans," Zverev said last month.

"We want to experience a fantastic weekend of tennis together and qualify for the Finals once again."

Germany came up just short in the Finals last year, as Tim Puetz and Kevin Krawietz suffered only their second defeat in 24 Davis Cup matches together in a deciding doubles rubber against Spain in the semi-finals.

The United States, record 32-time winners of the competition, face a serious test in their bid to end a 19-year wait for a 33rd title when they take on a strong Czech Republic side in Prague on Friday and Saturday.

There will be even more pressure on Shelton to deliver after world number 10 Taylor Fritz and Tommy Paul both withdrew from the American team.

Rising star Learner Tien and world number 104 Martin Damm were named as their replacements. Damm shares his name with his Czech-born father, a 2006 US Open men's doubles champion.

French Open semi-finalist Jakub Mensik, 24th-ranked Jiri Lehecka, Tomas Machac and Vit Kopriva make up the home outfit, captained by Tomas Berdych.

It will be a rematch of the second-round qualifying tie from last year, when Mensik beat Frances Tiafoe in a deciding singles rubber to give the Czechs a surprise 3-2 victory in Delray Beach.

USA skipper Bob Bryan, who was in the team the last time they won the trophy in 2007, will need Shelton at his best, despite the new world number four admitting he was "tired before I took the court" for the US Open final.

The winners of the contest between South Korea and India in Seoul will become the first Asian country to reach the quarter-finals since Kazakhstan in 2021.

The Koreans have included Kwon Soon-woo and Chung Hyeon, a former Australian Open semi-finalist now ranked 549th in the world, in their team.

Rafael Jodar, who turns 20 on Thursday, will make his Davis Cup debut for Spain as they continue their tilt at a seventh title against Chile in Santiago.

"It's so exciting to be able to represent Spain for the first time," said the world number 14.
"I was a hitting partner two years ago in Valencia and it was an incredible experience. I can't imagine what it's like as a player."

Britain, featuring surprise Wimbledon semi-finalist Arthur Fery, welcome Ecuador to London, while Austria take on Belgium, for whom Alexander Blockx withdrew following his run to the US Open quarters.

Felix Auger-Aliassime and Arthur Fils are slated to go head-to-head as Canada face France in Quebec City.

Greek Football Association ‌president Makis Gagatsis and former Germany national team director Oliver Bierhoff on Tuesday backed UEFA's push for change in FIFA's leadership, underscoring a united European front in opposition to FIFA president Gianni Infantino.

"The Greek FA (EPO) has taken a clear position against a candidacy of Gianni Infantino," EPO President Makis Gagatsis told reporters.

"We saw things happen at the World Cup that are not acceptable to football public opinion," Gagatsis said.

"Then... came a program to sell World Cup rights and we are clearly against it, so we withdrew our support of the FIFA president."

He was speaking after a meeting ‌of the UEFA ‌Executive Committee in the northern Greek city of ‌Thessaloniki, with a "legends'" five-a-side game held in the city center to promote UEFA's grassroots program.

UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin was also present at the event but did not talk to media.

Infantino has been under mounting pressure ever since he unveiled a proposal to sell a commercial stake of the World Cup to private investors. The plan prompted fierce opposition, with UEFA, the Asian Football Confederation and North America's CONCACAF among those calling for change at ‌the top of FIFA.

FIFA quickly abandoned ‌the plan and apologized to member associations for mistakes made, but its leadership reaffirmed ‌support for Infantino after a crisis meeting in August in Morocco.

UEFA ‌has been among the staunchest critics of Infantino and have said a change in leadership is now necessary given the loss of trust in Infantino, who is planning to run for re-election in March.

"We have to take care of ‌football," Bierhoff, who was Germany's national team director for 18 years until 2022, said.

"It is already commercial but it is a property for all of football.

"The world views may be different but in the last weeks and months a lot happened so that we have no trust anymore that it will be going in the right direction."

Infantino has weathered the opposition against him since he apologized to FIFA members in August over errors surrounding the abandoned proposal but has since declined to discuss the fallout publicly.

Sources have told Reuters his critics are now having to rethink their strategy.

They have until mid-November to name a rival presidential candidate but so far there is no clear frontrunner.

On Saturday, Danish football chief Jesper Moller, a member of UEFA’s Executive Committee, said he would continue working with European colleagues to find a candidate who could command a majority.
