Mohamed Salah broke a Premier League scoring record in Liverpool's opening game of the season, The AP reported.
Salah poked home a finish from close range in the 65th minute to take his tally of goals in the opening round of a Premier League season to nine, breaking a tie he had with a trio of English soccer greats in Wayne Rooney, Alan Shearer and Frank Lampard.
Five minutes earlier, Salah set up Diogo Jota for the first goal as Liverpool improved after a slow first half in its first competitive game under Slot, who replaced longtime manager Jurgen Klopp during the offseason, according to The AP.
While Liverpool joined Manchester United — a 1-0 winner over Fulham on Friday — in making a triumphant start to the season, it was an early lesson for Ipswich, whose most famous supporter, pop star Ed Sheeran, was cheering the team on from a VIP box at Portman Road.
This is Ipswich’s first season in the top flight since 2002 and the team looks sure to entertain, even if it might concede plenty of goals in the process with its open, expansive style.
There were five more games later Saturday, including Arsenal — the runner-up in the past two seasons — hosting Wolverhampton.
Reigning champion Manchester City begins its title defense at Chelsea on Sunday.

By netting Liverpool's second against Ipswich, the Egypt star took his tally of goals in the opening round of a Premier League season to nine — more than anyone else.

He previously shared the record with Frank Lampard, Wayne Rooney and Alan Shearer.

Salah's goal put Liverpool 2-0 ahead at Portman Road.

Liverpool veteran Andy Robertson said Thursday he is open to talks with the Anfield hierarchy over the question of a new contract that will keep him at the reigning Premier League champions.

The Scotland captain, in the final months of his current deal, has lost his first-team spot to £40 million ($53.5 million) summer transfer window signing Milos Kerkez.

But 31-year-old left-back Robertson has still made 20 appearances so far this season.

"It's a difficult question to answer. I've got five months left and we need to see the option to stay or if there's options to go," said Robertson, who has won eight major trophies since joining the Reds in 2017.

"I need to see what myself and my family want moving forward. I've given absolutely everything for the club for the last eight-and-a-half years and the club have been very good to me.

"They have rewarded me with good contracts when I have been playing well. My relationship with the people higher up in the club has always been excellent since the day I came in."

He added: "Signing me for £8 million (from Hull) and then doing what I have done helps that -- I remind people of that all the time!

"The relationship is good and it's not quite 'what do they need to show me and what do I need to show them' as we've shown each other more than enough respect over the last eight-and-a-half years and we'll see what comes."

Robertson could have moved to Atletico Madrid after helping Liverpool win a second Premier League title in five years but stayed in the knowledge the 22-year-old Kerkez might take his place.

But Robertson insisted his desire for first-team action remained undimmed.

"I think Jurgen Klopp left me out of one game and I was raging, so I'm a player who wants to play," said Robertson, who may be back on the bench for Saturday's visit of Burnley.

"I've played through injuries, I've played when I've only been 50, 40, 30 percent fit for this club and my country.

"I do have a different role here this season which I'm getting enjoyment out of but at the end of the day, footballers want to play, and if anyone is sat happy on the bench then they don't belong at any football club."

Tottenham Sign England Midfielder Gallagher from Atletico

England midfielder Conor Gallagher has signed for Tottenham Hotspur from Atletico Madrid on a long-term contract, the Premier League club said on Wednesday.

The 25-year-old, who joined the Spanish side from Chelsea in 2024, made four starts in LaLiga this season. Spurs and Atletico agreed a transfer fee of approximately 34.6 million pounds ($46.60 million), according to British media.

"I'm so happy and ‌excited to ‌be here, taking the ‌next ⁠step in ‌my career at an amazing club," said Gallagher, who will be hoping a return to the Premier League will boost his chances of making England's World Cup squad.

The pressure is mounting on manager Thomas Frank with Tottenham ⁠registering one win in their last seven games across ‌all competitions.

To add to their ‍troubles, forward Mohammed ‍Kudus suffered a quad injury keeping him ‍out until April, while midfielders Lucas Bergvall and Rodrigo Bentancur have also been sidelined due to injuries.

Striker Richarlison also went down with what appeared to be a hamstring strain in their 2-1 loss to Aston Villa ⁠last Saturday which sealed Tottenham's exit from the FA Cup.

"Conor has captained teams so will bring leadership, maturity, character and personality to our dressing room, while his running power, pressing ability and eye for goal will strengthen us in a key area of the pitch," Frank said in a statement.

Tottenham, 14th in the Premier League standings, face ‌relegation-threatened West Ham United on Saturday.

Massimiliano Allegri, the coach of Italian soccer side AC Milan, joined the ranks of Winter Olympics torchbearers on Wednesday, amid a row over the exclusion of former athletes that has prompted government intervention.

The torch is journeying through Italy's 110 provinces ahead of the start of the Milano-Cortina games, scheduled for February 6-22.

Allegri walked with other volunteers through the city of Borgomanero, about 70 kilometers (45 miles) northwest of Milan.

Some 10,001 torchbearers have been mobilized to carry the flame, ‌wearing white ‌uniforms with a red-and-yellow pattern ‌recalling ⁠the Olympic flame.

But ‌former cross-country skiing champion Silvio Fauner is complaining that he and other Olympic medal winners have been sidelined.

"There's no respect for us champions. I consider it an incredible insult," Fauner said in an interview on Tuesday with sports daily La Gazzetta dello Sport.

"I represent 10 athletes who ⁠have won 35 Olympic medals, starting with the two gold relay ‌teams of 1994 and 2006... We ‍were not involved in the ‍slightest in any Winter Olympics initiative in our ‍country. Neither torchbearers, nor ambassadors, nor any role. Nothing," he said.

Olympics organizers said in a statement Fauner had been excluded from torchbearing duties because political office holders are disqualified.

Fauner is deputy mayor of Sappada, a ski resort in the Dolomites.

In a follow-up on Facebook, the retired ⁠athlete complained of double standards, noting that a local politician was among the torchbearers in Sicily.

He said he was speaking up for "at least 15 (other) athletes who have won Olympic medals in winter sports, champions who have written the history of Italian sport and who today feel sidelined."

Italian Infrastructure Minister Matteo Salvini, who is heavily involved in Olympics preparations, and Sports Minister Andrea Abodi announced on Wednesday an "urgent meeting" with Games organizers to deal with ‌the controversy.

In a joint statement, they said they wanted to shed light "on very baffling decisions".
