Luis Suarez and Marcelo Weigandt each had one goal and one assist to help Inter Miami record a 4-1 victory over the New York Red Bulls on Saturday night at Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
Lionel Messi added his first MLS goal since April 6 and Fafa Picault also found the back of the net for Inter Miami (6-1-3, 21 points), Reuters said.
Mohammed Sofo had the lone tally for the Red Bulls (4-4-3, 15 points), who remain winless (0-3-2) on the road this season.
New York had allowed just nine goals in 10 matches before Miami put on an offensive show. The Herons have scored seven goals in their past two MLS matches but lost the first one, 4-3 to FC Dallas last Sunday.
Miami goalkeeper Oscar Ustari and New York counterpart Carlos Miguel Coronel each had two stops.
The Herons held a 12-10 edge in shots and placed six on target to three for the Red Bulls.
Miami scored the first three goals of the match and was never again threatened.
Picault scored in the ninth minute to get things started. Weigandt sent a cross to the left and it glanced off the head of Suarez. Picault was there and placed a right-footed shot into the top left corner.
Miami scored twice in nine minutes later in the half. In the 30th minute, Weigandt had his header stopped by Coronel but got the rebound and set a right-footed shot into the net.
Suarez also went the rebound route to make it 3-0. His right-footed shot was blocked by New York's Kyle Duncan before he hurried forward and sent a left-footer into the net.
The Red Bulls got on the board in the 43th minute as Sofo sent a high looping header from the left side that landed in the right-hand corner of the net. The foot of Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting appeared to touch the ball inside the post but the goal was awarded to Sofo.
Any thought of a New York comeback was put to the rest in the 67th minute when Messi ripped a short-range left-footed shot into the net.

Kimi Antonelli on Miami GP Pole; Race Moved Up Due to Forecast

Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli earned his third consecutive pole by edging Red Bull's Max Verstappen and Ferrari's Charles Leclerc during Saturday's session ahead of the Miami Grand Prix.

Antonelli, who leads the drivers' standings, posted a time of 1 minute, 27.798 seconds that held up even though the 19-year-old Italian was unable to improve upon the time on his final lap at the Miami International Autodrome.

Verstappen threatened but ultimately finished a little more than a tenth of a second behind, Reuters reported.

Reigning world champion Lando Norris will start fourth for McLaren, followed by Antonelli's teammate George Russell.

With Sunday's forecast calling for heavy thunderstorms and rain, Formula 1 moved the start of the race up three hours from 4 p.m. ET to 1 p.m. following discussions with the FIA.

"This decision has been taken to ensure the least amount of disruption to the race, and to ⁠ensure the maximum ⁠possible window to complete the Grand Prix in the best conditions and to prioritize the safety of drivers, fans, teams and staff," read a statement by the FIA, Formula 1 and the Miami Grand Prix.

Even with the new start time, weather could prove to be a significant factor in the 57-lap race. According to F1 rules, a race can have a maximum active run time of two hours, and Sunday's race could ⁠see multiple start and stops.

The Miami GP follows a lengthy break in the schedule with races in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia canceled due to the war in the Middle East. It also saw several teams introduce significant upgrades as they continue to adjust to the 2026 regulations.

Verstappen qualified and finished fifth in Saturday's Sprint and has shown increasing pace throughout the week.

"I think over those last few weeks the team has been pushing flat-out to try and bring upgrades to the car, and making me feel more comfortable with a lot of things in the car," Verstappen said.

"It really pays off. I feel more in control of the car again, then I can push a ⁠bit more, then ⁠the upgrades are working. To be on the front row is way better than I expected heading into the weekend."

Verstappen said his first priority is to get off to a good start on Sunday, hopefully before weather impacts the race.

"We'll try to have a look at that, for sure, and see what the weather will do tomorrow, but I'm already very happy with where we are," Verstappen said.

"From here there's like light at the end of the tunnel, and we can just push on and try to close the gap further."

He'll have to find a way past Antonelli, who rebounded from a poor start and a time penalty during the Sprint to earn the pole for Sunday's race.

"I'm super happy with the recovery," Antonelli said. "This weekend has obviously been a little bit more difficult for us, but we're keeping all this together and we're maximizing the performance."

Real Madrid defender Dani Carvajal will miss the Clasico on May 10 after suffering a toe fracture, his club said Saturday.

The veteran right-back is set to miss the next two weeks according to Spanish media and could return for the club's final game of the season against Athletic Bilbao.

Real Madrid, second, are 11 points behind league leaders Barcelona who could clinch La Liga this weekend with a win at Osasuna, if Los Blancos drop points at Espanyol on Sunday.

Carvajal will be out for the Clasico clash at Barca next Sunday, which may be his last as a Madrid player.

The defender, who has won six Champions League titles and four La Liga titles with Madrid, is out of contract at the end of the season.

The 34-year-old had hoped to form part of Spain's World Cup squad this summer but after an injury-hit season his chances were already slim before his latest setback.

Alex Zanardi, Auto Racing Champion-Turned-Paralympian, Dies at 59 After Life-Altering Accidents

Alex Zanardi, the Italian auto racing champion-turned-Paralympic gold medalist whose career was marked by two life-altering accidents, has died. He was 59.

Zanardi’s family announced his death on Saturday, saying that he passed away on Friday night.

“Alex died peacefully, surrounded by the affection of those closest to him,” the family said in a statement without providing a cause of death.

In 2020, Zanardi was seriously injured in a handbike accident after crashing into an oncoming truck during a relay event in Tuscany. Zanardi suffered serious facial and cranial trauma in the crash and was put in a medically induced coma.

Nearly 20 years earlier, Zanardi lost both of his legs in an auto racing crash.

"Italy loses a great champion and an extraordinary man, capable of turning every challenge of life into a lesson in courage, strength, and dignity,” Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni said on X.

“Alex Zanardi knew how to bounce back every time, facing even the toughest challenges with determination, clarity, and a strength of spirit that was truly exceptional,” Meloni added. “With his sporting achievements, with his example, and with his humanity, he gave all of us much more than a victory: he gave hope, pride, and the strength to never give up. On behalf of myself and the government, I extend my heartfelt thoughts and the sincerest closeness to his family and to all those who loved him. Thank you for everything, Alex.”

Zanardi won two championships in CART in the United States before a brief move to Formula One. He returned to America and was racing in Germany in a CART event in 2001 when both of his legs were severed in a horrific accident the weekend after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. CART raced only because the series was already in Germany at the time of the attacks and could not return to the US.

During his recovery, Zanardi designed his own prosthetics — he joked that he made himself taller — and learned to walk again. He then turned his attention to hand cycling and developed into one of the most accomplished athletes in the world. He won four gold medals and two silvers at the 2012 and 2016 Paralympics, competed in the New York City Marathon and set an Ironman record.

His spirit, will, and determination gave the beloved Italian a larger-than-life persona. When he returned to the US in 2019 to compete for BMW at the Rolex 24 of Daytona without his prosthetics, he was the most revered driver in a field that included F1 champion Fernando Alonso.

Drivers from around the world sought out Zanardi for photographs and were transfixed as he told elaborate tales of his adventures in the nearly two decades since many had seen him.

Noted for his infectious smile and fanciful storytelling, Zanardi was praised by Pope Francis after his 2020 crash as an example of strength amid adversity. Francis penned a handwritten letter of encouragement assuring Zanardi and his family of his prayers.

Zanardi’s family added that it “thanks everyone who is sharing their support right now and asks for respect during this time of mourning.”

Funeral details were still to be announced, the family said.
