Mohamed Salah inspired Egypt to their first-ever World ‌Cup win as they came from a goal down to beat New Zealand 3-1 with a brilliant second-half display on Sunday, moving top of Group G and boosting their hopes of reaching the knockout stage.

After a relatively quiet first half that saw them go in behind at the break, Egypt and Salah turned up the heat in the second period as the 34-year-old winger showed he is still capable of conjuring magic from his boots.

"It's a great achievement for all the players. It's a great win. It's a great vibe. The next game is very important," Salah said as he took the plaudits amongst his teammates.

Egypt, who drew 1-1 with Belgium in their opener, moved top of the group with four points from two matches. The All Whites, held 2-2 by Iran in their opener, are bottom with one point. Belgium and the Iranians have two points after their 0-0 draw.

New Zealand’s ‌first-half gameplan was ‌as simple as it was effective, kicking long when they needed to and ‌keeping possession when they could, and defender Finn Surman broke the deadlock from a corner, losing marker Ahmed Fatouh before steering a powerful header into the net.

Though Callum McCowatt had a glancing header tipped over the bar early on for New Zealand, Egypt piled on the pressure after the break and they levelled through Mostafa Zico, who headed home Mohamed Hany's cross from the right in the 58th minute.

Salah then finally gave the crowd what they wanted nine minutes later, breaking forward down the right and playing a one-two with Zico before slotting the ball into the far corner.

Salah almost scored his second in the 81st minute, cutting in from the right and firing ‌a deflected shot over, but he notched an assist from the ‌resulting corner as substitute Mahmoud Trezeguet dived to head home at the near post.

EAR-SPLITTING ROAR GREETS EGYPT VICTORY

The New Zealanders ‌gave it all they had to reduce the deficit and Hossam Abdelmaguid had to be replaced late on ‌with a suspected concussion, his eye swelling up as he left the field.

By the 10th minute of stoppage time, the Egyptian fans were whistling loudly for the referee to end the game.

When he did, an ear-splitting roar went up as Salah and company made history with the country's first World Cup win and coach Hossam Hassan lapped the stadium with an ‌Egyptian flag.

"My feelings are the same as those of the Egyptian people because I am one of them. I am one of them and I love them - those who came here and those who stayed up back in Egypt watching," Hassan said.

"The stadium felt as if we were in Egypt. The fans made it feel as though we were playing in Egypt, and I told the players, 'We're playing in Egypt.' The stadium was full, like Cairo Stadium."

New Zealand, after twice being pegged back by Iran in their 2-2 draw, again let a lead slip, and this time it proved more costly as Salah worked his magic.

"I think we contained them well enough, but they have good enough people in the whole side," New Zealand captain Chris Wood told reporters.

"You can't just focus on one player, and he (Salah) can pop up with a goal at any time and he showed that."

"He's a good player, you have to keep an eye on him, but there's also a lot of other boys in that team that create problems and eventually they scored goals as well."

New Zealand round off the group stage against Belgium in Vancouver, while Egypt will meet Iran in their final game with all to play for in the race for a spot in the Round of 32.

Prince William, joined by his wife Kate and a host of leading British sporting figures, launched a new initiative on Thursday aimed at helping the sports sector play a greater role in suicide prevention.

The issue of mental health and suicide prevention is one of the British heir's key campaigning priorities. Last October he came close to tears as he discussed the impact of suicide with a woman whose husband had taken his own life.

"Sport has the ability to reach people who may never walk through the door of a mental healthcare service," William said at Everton soccer club's ground on World Suicide Prevention Day.

The campaign is backed by England captain Harry Kane, former striker Alan Shearer and Olympic gold medallists Kelly Holmes and husband-and-wife cycling champions Jason and Laura Kenny.

It was William's highest profile appearance in Britain since his brother, Prince Harry, and his wife and children, returned to live in Britain last month.

The brothers, who have fallen out since Harry moved to the United States six years ago and publicly criticized the royal family in interviews and his memoir, previously campaigned together to raise awareness of mental health issues.

AIMING TO CREATE A MOVEMENT ACROSS SPORT

William described suicide as one of society's greatest challenges and said preventing it was everyone's responsibility.

"We want to start a movement across sport," he said. "We're calling for a commitment to create environments where people feel able to speak openly, where asking for help is seen as a sign of strength, and where support is never out of reach."

The initiative, called "On Your Side", has been developed by the Royal Foundation, the charitable organization founded by William and Kate. It aims to help people involved in sport recognise warning signs and support those struggling before they reach crisis point.

William's office, Kensington Palace, said the initiative's toolkit could be used by organizations ranging from grassroots clubs to elite sports bodies.

The Football Association, Premier League and British Cycling are set to commit to incorporating the toolkit into their policies and practices, the palace said.

The Asian Games began in Japan on Thursday with Qatar beating Iran in men's basketball, the first action in the continental multi-sport showpiece that has more participants than the Olympics.

Over 17,000 athletes and officials are expected to take part in 43 sports at the Nagoya-Aichi Games -- which do not officially start until the opening ceremony on September 19 and will run until October 4.

Several events such as basketball, football, cricket, hockey and modern pentathlon will get under way before the opening ceremony, AFP reported.

Qatar held off a comeback from Iran to win their Group B encounter 59-35 at the Aichi International Arena in Nagoya in the first match of a men's basketball competition that will hold medal finals on September 20, the day after the opening ceremony.

"We know we need to win at least one game so we can qualify for the next round," said Qatar's Michael Lewis, the United States-born player who scored a game-high 21 points.

"Feels good to get some team camaraderie back, and now we have got to keep going."

Later in Group B, Taiwan beat Jordan 83-80.

Los Angeles 2028 Olympics qualifying spots are up for grabs in several sports at the Asian Games, which are returning to Japan for the first time since 1994.

Organizers hope the athletes will have a "unique experience" staying in accommodation ranging from a cruise liner and wooden containers to standard hotel rooms.

Officials are confident that the plan will not be affected by Japan's typhoon season, which is usually in full swing in September-October.

Weather has already caused disruptions, with record rainfall on Tuesday forcing hundreds of athletes briefly to evacuate their accommodation.

Rainwater also leaked into some competition venues, with more wet weather forecast for the coming days.

Among those in action at the Games will be Philippine tennis sensation Alexandra Eala and a pair of world-class teenage talents in 15-year-old Indian cricketer Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and 13-year-old Chinese swimmer Yu Zidi.
