England's much-vaunted attack clicked impressively in their opening World Cup win over Croatia, but defensive fears linger as they attempt to seal a place in the knockouts on Tuesday.

Thomas Tuchel's men were twice pegged back in the first half in Arlington, Texas, before upping their game to win 4-2.

It was an impressive performance against an experienced if ageing Croatia team, but there will be stiffer challenges ahead against sides who boast more pace and firepower, such as France, Spain and Argentina.

Next up for England are Ghana in Boston -- the Three Lions will go through to the last 32 as Group L winners if they beat the African side and Panama fail to beat Croatia.

On the surface, the problem is not obvious. After all, England breezed through qualifying without conceding a single goal in eight matches.

But their defense has two major weaknesses -- a lack of experience and a worrying injury record.

Former England defender Gary Neville, now a Sky Sports pundit, said the team's first-half display against the Croats would have unnerved them.

"I think that it will make Thomas Tuchel adjust for maybe games two and three, and make him think slightly differently about how he sort of maybe plays that defense, and how he looks at protecting them," he said.

The head coach opted to leave three players with significant tournament experience at home -- Real Madrid right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold and Manchester United pair Luke Shaw and Harry Maguire.

England lost Tino Livramento to injury before they had kicked a ball in anger, replacing him with Trevoh Chalobah, who has just one cap under his belt.

- Inexperience -

It means the nine defenders in the 26-man squad have a total of 191 caps between them, with 90 of those belonging to John Stones.

Three members of the back four -- the injury-prone Reece James, Ezri Konsa and 21-year-old Nico O'Reilly -- were making their World Cup debuts against Croatia.

The main debate centers on whether Manchester City defender Marc Guehi should replace Konsa in central defense, though the Villa defender has been a favorite under Tuchel.

The German values the experience and composure of Stones even though he started just five Premier League games last season before leaving City.

But former England striker Chris Sutton believes Tuchel should pair Konsa and Guehi rather than start Stones, whom he says lacks the athleticism of the two younger defenders.

"I think Konsa and Guehi have better attributes in terms of one-against-one situations than John Stones and there will be times in games when they will be isolated one-against-one against players of the highest class," he told the BBC.

England forward Ollie Watkins is less concerned, brushing aside concerns over the back four while speaking to reporters at the team's training base in Kansas City on Sunday.

"I think people are always going to try and criticize and find certain areas they can pick on but I think defensively we've got world-class players at the end of the day who have won major trophies and played at the highest level possible," he said.

"I think maybe we started the game a little bit nervously the other day but you've seen once the nerves are out of the lads' system, I think in the second half we absolutely blew Croatia away."

David Beckham said Lionel Messi's "legacy will live forever" after the Argentina legend announced his retirement from international football.

Messi on Monday revealed he had called time on his remarkable career with Argentina after 207 caps and 125 goals.

The 39-year-old won the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and his last game for his country was Argentina's World Cup final defeat against Spain in July.

Messi's brilliance for Argentina and Barcelona made him one of the world's greatest ever players.

Former England captain Beckham has had a close-up view of Messi's career as an opponent and now as co-owner of the forward's current side Inter Miami.

"This is the moment we get to look back on and realize how grateful we were to witness the greatness of a young kid with a dream," Beckham wrote on Instagram on Tuesday.

"Leo, you have been a credit to yourself, your family, your friends and your country. Leading by example and creating inspiration for millions of children not just in Argentina but around the whole world.

"Leo, you delivered the greatest gift to your country and, for that, your legacy will live forever. Congratulations on all you achieved for Argentina."

Manchester City hope to seal a blockbuster move for Enzo Fernandez, while Arsenal have their sights set on Julian Alvarez in the final hours before the transfer window closes.

With Premier League clubs unable to sign players until January once Tuesday's 2200 GMT deadline passes, City, Arsenal and company have one last chance to improve their squads.

Frantic last-minute spending is on the agenda as City try to finally seal a swoop for Chelsea midfielder Fernandez.

Chelsea value Fernandez at around £120 million ($162 million) and City have yet to match that hefty price tag.

A reunion with City's former Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca might suit Fernandez, who had angered the Blues last season by expressing interest in joining Real Madrid.

Maresca is keen to land the Argentine after the recent sale of influential World Cup winner Rodri to Barcelona, as well as the departures of fellow midfielders Bernardo Silva, Nico Gonzalez and Tijjani Reijnders.

Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has left Fernandez out of his squad for the last two games as speculation swirls over his potential switch to the Etihad Stadium.

City are also expected to announce the signing of Senegal midfielder Iliman Ndiaye from Everton in a deal worth £65 million.

Tottenham had been linked with Ndiaye, but City appear to have won the race for the 26-year-old's signature.

Champions Arsenal can make a major splash if they can land Argentina striker Alvarez.

Alvarez reportedly prefers a move to Barcelona but, while Atletico do not want to sell to their La Liga rivals, they could be persuaded to do a £128 million deal with Arsenal.

- Statement of intent -

Alvarez has missed several training sessions and was not part of the Atletico team that beat Sevilla last weekend.

Landing the former City star would be a significant statement of intent from Arsenal, who are looking to win the club's first back-to-back English titles since the 1930s.

Meanwhile, Arsenal striker Ethan Nwaneri is lined up for a season-long loan at Borussia Dortmund.

Liverpool splashed out on France forward Bradley Barcola on Monday, spending £123 million to lure him from Paris Saint-Germain.

But Reds boss Andoni Iraola still wants another winger as the club adjusts to life without Mohamed Salah, who joined Trabzonspor in August after ending his iconic Liverpool career.

Crystal Palace's Ismaila Sarr and Brighton's Yankuba Minteh are on Iraola's wanted list.

If Liverpool sign either of those targets, it could clear the way for Dutch forward Cody Gakpo to leave Anfield amid interest from City and Tottenham.

Harvey Elliott is due to leave Liverpool, with a loan at Valencia lined up for the playmaker after his disappointing stint at Aston Villa last term.

Tottenham are keen to bring in Chelsea winger Mykhailo Mudryk on loan after missing out on Ndiaye.

City winger Jack Grealish is set to rejoin Everton on loan after spending last season with David Moyes's men.

Grealish has fallen out of favor at City over the last two years, but impressed at Everton before suffering a season-ending foot injury in January.

Everton are also on the verge of signing United States forward Folarin Balogun from Monaco in a £40 million deal.

Newcastle striker Nicolas Woltemade is set to join Juventus on loan.
