Finishing chances is just what Erling Haaland does. And on Sunday, that was enough to give Norway their biggest win in World Cup history.

Haaland powered in a 79th-minute header and added a second in the 90th minute as Norway stunned Brazil 2-1 to reach their first-ever World Cup quarterfinal at the expense of the five-time champions.

Kept under wraps for most of the round of 16 fixture, Haaland's sixth and seventh goals of the tournament sent Brazil to their earliest exit since being eliminated in the round of 16 in 1990.

He's now tied with Argentina's Lionel Messi and France's Kylian Mbappe for the tournament lead.

"I mean, it's like things normally are," the imposing 25-year-old center forward explained, via an interpreter. "If I have a chance or two, then very often I score. I'm not quite sure, but this is what I do. It's all about being focused and taking the chances I get. And I normally get them even if I don't score on the first one."

Norway's Orjan Nyland made four stops, including a diving denial of Bruno Guimaraes' 14th-minute penalty kick. The 34-year-old Neymar converted a second late spot kick deep in second-half stoppage time in what will be his final appearance for Brazil, he announced after the match.

Norway will now face England in a quarterfinal in Miami Gardens, Fla., on July 11 after the Three Lions beat Mexico 2-1 later on Sunday.

"I never thought about it," Norway manager Stale Solbakken said of reaching this stage. "I just thought that we needed to proceed from the group stage. And then, of course, it's the next game, and now it was Brazil.

"I told the boys that maybe we didn't have a 50-50 chance today, but if we can play up to our best, then we have a 50-50 chance."

The result maintained one of the all-time World Cup oddities, the Nordic nation's perfect 2-0-0 record against the Selecao in the competition. The other victory in 1998, also a 2-1 Norway triumph, came in a group-stage finale after Brazil had already secured passage to the knockout phase.

Haaland's first came after an extended stretch in which Carlo Ancelotti's side looked more likely to score.

Just seconds after coming into the match, the 19-year-old Endrick missed Brazil's best chance of the afternoon, getting his footing all wrong and firing wide after reaching Vinicius Junior's excellent throughball in the 59th minute, Reuters reported.

Nyland also denied Rayan and Guimaraes after the break before Norway turned the tables in the final 15 minutes and guaranteed Brazil's World Cup drought would extend to at least 28 years.

"Obviously, everyone is profoundly disappointed, given what happened," said Ancelotti, who took over the program in late spring of 2025. "We didn't do a spectacular World Cup campaign, but we did a good one, and we even deserved to win the match at some points today."

Less than five minutes after Andreas Schjelderup forced Alisson into a 75th- minute stop, he found Haaland with a looping cross from the left. Haaland rose above Gabriel Magalhaes and nodded downward beyond Alisson's dive.

The same duo combined 11 minutes later to seal it. Schjelderup provided the square ball from the left, and Haaland controlled it and snapped a low, right- footed shot into the bottom right corner.

Afterward, he was given the honor of leading the minority of Norway fans in the building in their now-famous Viking Row celebration, and he had advice for his countrymen across the Atlantic.

"Everyone just needs to enjoy themselves," the Manchester City man said. "This is just an insane day. Like I said, it's one of the most insane days in Norwegian history. Just enjoy it. Embrace it and enjoy the moment."

Early on, American referee Ismail Elfath originally waved play on following Kristoffer Ajer's penalty-area tackle on Matheus Cunha, only to reverse his decision and point to the spot following a look at the replay monitor.

Guimaraes stepped to the spot, hesitated and fired toward the bottom right corner, where Nyland made a strong diving save.

Jude Bellingham's double inflicted a rare defeat on Mexico at the Estadio Azteca as 10-man England won a nerve-racking World Cup classic 3-2 to reach the quarter-finals.

Harry Kane also scored from the penalty spot as the Three Lions overcame Jarell Quansah's red card, high altitude and a fervent home support to keep their quest for a first major tournament win in 60 years alive.

England have relied on Bellingham and Kane throughout the tournament and that duo have carried them into a last eight showdown with Erling Haaland's Norway.

Bellingham struck twice in 98 seconds in the first half to condemn Mexico to just a third defeat in 90 matches at the Azteca.

Julian Quinones and Raul Jimenez reduced the Mexican arrears but they fell short of a place in the quarter-finals, AFP reported.

Victory also helped to erase some of England's nightmarish memories at the Azteca in the quarter-finals of the 1986 World Cup when Diego Maradona scored a double for Argentina, including the infamous "Hand of God" goal.

The match was delayed by an hour after a thunder storm and heavy rain lashed the Mexican capital for hours before the planned 6.00pm (0000 GMT) kick-off time.

Despite the sodden conditions, over 80,000 fans crammed into the stadium to create a deafening noise.

England coach Thomas Tuchel was wary of a fast start from Mexico as his side adjusted to the altitude 2,240 meters (7,350 feet) above sea level.

Mexico had flown out of the traps when they won a World Cup knockout game for the first time in 40 years against Ecuador 2-0 on Tuesday.

This time England managed to keep Javier Aguirre's side at bay, but did need a crucial intervention from Jordan Pickford to deny Jimenez opening the scoring with a diving header that was headed for the bottom corner.

Tuchel made three changes to the side that needed a heroic performance from Kane to prevent an embarrassing early exit to DR Congo.

Quansah was forced to deputize at right-back with Reece James not fit to start for a third consecutive game, opening up Tuchel to criticism over his decision not to select more specialist cover in that position.

Anthony Gordon and Bukayo Saka also started out wide and both made telling contributions.

Saka's cross picked out Bellingham to power in a header for the first goal Mexico had conceded in five World Cup games.

The hosts failed to compose themselves as within two minutes the Real Madrid midfielder had doubled England's lead.

Kane's ball across fell perfectly for Bellingham to power in his fourth goal of the tournament.

Yet what should have been a comfortable lead was nearly wiped out by half-time.

Julian Quinones blasted in his fourth goal of the tournament to spark the Mexico rally after England failed to clear a free-kick.

Jimenez drilled wide and saw another header saved by Pickford before Bellingham made a last-ditch intervention to deny Cesar Montes a certain equalizer.

Nico O'Reilly nearly restored England's two-goal cushion as his deflected shot cannoned off the post.

Quansah was shown a straight red card on 54 minutes after a VAR review for a mistimed lunge on Jesus Gallardo.

But just six minutes later the 10 men had added to their lead when Gordon was wiped out by Mexico goalkeeper Raul Rangel and Kane emphatically dispatched the penalty.

The England captain's sixth goal of the tournament puts him just one behind Haaland, Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe in the race for the Golden Boot.

The game took another huge momentum swing when this time Kane was penalized for a foul inside his own box and Jimenez slotted home the penalty to set up a frantic final 20 minutes.

England though stood tall, defending at times frantically to resist the Mexican wave during 11 minutes of additional time and reach a third consecutive World Cup quarter-final.

Thousands of ecstatic fans greeted Cape Verde's Blue Sharks Sunday, waving banners at the Praia airport as the team returned after its slim defeat to Argentina in one of the World Cup's most surprising matches.

The Sharks are set for a parade through the streets of the capital before meeting with the president and other members of the government of the small archipelago nation off west Africa.

Cape Verde progressed to the knockout stages in their first World Cup, thrilling supporters back home and gaining fans abroad as they confounded expectations.

In an epic last-32 contest in Miami, Cape Verde pushed Argentina to the brink, but the reigning world champions snatched a 3-2 win in extra time.

The team's arrival back home coincided with Cape Verde's independence day.

"After the heroes who fought for our independence, we now have these heroes -- the Blue Sharks", fan Edmilson Correia, 28, told AFP from the airport crowd.

Cape Verde head coach Bubista spoke to the press after landing.

"We demonstrated that our World Cup qualification wasn't down to luck. We showed hard work and resilience, and we left the United States with our heads held high", he said.

Supporters dressed in the team blue strained to catch a glimpse of their heroes, such as Sidny Lopes Cabral and Vozinha.

Twelve-year-old Ivan Goncalves said he was on the lookout for Cabral in particular because of his "fabulous goal against Argentina".

Minister of Culture and Sports Antonio Duarte commended the Blue Sharks and their coach for "cementing Cape Verde's status as a great nation".

Despite the team's loss to Argentina, celebrations erupted in Praia in the early hours of Saturday morning, as fans commemorated the fairytale journey and slim defeat against the world champions.

Cape Verde, a nation of just 500,000 people, on Sunday marked its 51st anniversary of independence from Portugal, which ruled the country for 500 years.

Charles Leclerc took his first Formula 1 win in nearly two years as a chaotic British Grand Prix ended behind the safety car on Sunday and standings leader Kimi Antonelli missed the points again with a damaged car.

Leclerc surged past Antonelli at the start as the Mercedes driver dropped to third but the Italian was chasing Leclerc down in the final laps when he reported a steering problem. Leclerc took the win under the safety car after a spectacular spin into the gravel from third by Max Verstappen.

“Finally!” Leclerc said over the radio after taking the win. “This one felt particularly good, even if I wished it was a more normal ending.”

Leclerc leaped out of his car and ran to a crowd of Ferrari staff who surged forward to embrace him, toppling a crowd barrier onto their driver. Leclerc’s last F1 victory was at the United States Grand Prix in October 2024.

After Antonelli reported issues with his car, he came into the pits but that didn't help and he started dropping back through the field. Later, Verstappen's spin shook up the race again.

Antonelli's Mercedes teammate and title rival George Russell went on to second to deny Ferrari a one-two finish, staying out on old tires when Lewis Hamilton came into the pits under the safety car.

Hamilton had fresh tires but couldn't use them because the race finished behind the safety car. He crossed the line third.

Hamilton was also facing an investigation after the race for allegedly infringing yellow-flag conditions around the time he lost the place to Russell.

Antonelli was ninth across the line after ignoring the team’s pleas to retire the car so he could fight for the final points places. He ended up outside the points anyway. The Italian dropped to 16th with a time penalty for going off-track as he wrangled his damaged car around the corners.
