The president of the Spanish football league, Javier Tebas, accused FIFA of acting "irresponsibly" following the announcement of discussions regarding a possible 64-team World Cup in 2030, in an interview with an Italian sports daily published Tuesday.

Tebas also said that FIFA president Gianni Infantino's time was "over", telling La Gazzetta dello Sport that there is a "system that is fundamentally flawed", which has allowed him to lead football's global governing body for a decade.

"The football industry is not just about the World Cup, however important it may be," he said.

"They are destroying the football industry -- which generates tens of thousands of jobs -- for an event that lasts 40 days and involves only a minority of players."

At the World Cup opening ceremony in June, Infantino mentioned "discussions about expanding to 64 teams" for the World Cup's centenary in 2030, which will be co-hosted primarily by Spain, Portugal and Morocco, with Paraguay, Uruguay and Argentina also welcoming some matches.

"We have repeatedly expressed our concerns about the competition calendar. And now they want to organize a 64-team World Cup," Tebas added, emphasizing that "it is the domestic leagues that keep this sport alive".

"We need fewer national teams and better protection for domestic football at all levels. They don't realize this and are making decisions irresponsibly," Tebas added.

Iga Swiatek has withdrawn from the Ningbo Open in China because of an injured left thigh, diminishing her chances of contesting the season-ending WTA Finals at Indian Wells next month.

The six-time major winner lost to eventual champion Maja Chwalinska in the semifinals at the Wuhan Open last week a nd struggled at times in that match.

“After careful consideration, I’ve decided to withdraw from the tournament,” Swiatek said in a statement posted on social media Tuesday by the Ningbo tournament.

“I’ve been experiencing an ongoing problem with my left thigh over the past weeks and I feel that giving myself the time to rest and recover is the right decision,” The Associated Press quoted her as saying.

Swiatek was one of three players in contention for the last spot in the eight-player field for the WTA Finals with Karolina Muchova and Marta Kostyuk ahead of tournaments this week.

The WTA, in a preview of the Ningbo tournament, said if Swiatek didn't reach the quarterfinals and Kostyuk doesn't reach the final here, Muchova will secure the remaining spot for the season-ending tournament at Indian Wells starting Nov. 8.

Champions League hopefuls Bayern Munich are set for an early test of their title credentials when they host English champions Arsenal on Wednesday without in-form winger Michael Olise.

The London-born Olise, who started in Arsenal's junior system, is suspended after picking up two yellow cards inside a minute in Bayern's 3-3 draw with Viking last week.

After seeing a first yellow for a foul, a clearly frustrated Olise responded to some verbal provocation from Viking captain Zlatko Tripic by throwing the ball at his head to be sent off for the first time in his career.

After being thrust into Ballon d'Or contention due to last season's stellar showing, the former Crystal Palace winger has continued his excellent form this campaign.

Olise has nine goals and five assists from 10 games in all competitions for Bayern.

With Jamal Musiala struggling with injury and illness and both Serge Gnabry and Lennart Karl well off their best form, Olise and the ever-reliable Harry Kane have shouldered Bayern's attacking burden so far this season.

The England captain has nine goals and six assists in 10 games. With Bayern 2-0 down away at Viking last week, Kane almost single-handedly engineered a comeback, scoring twice and setting up another.

Speaking after Bayern's ruthless 6-1 victory over RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga on Saturday, Kane said Bayern would miss Olise but called on the rest of their star-studded squad to step up.

"Missing one of your biggest players, you're going to feel it for sure, but that's where other people have to step up and show they can take their opportunity," Kane said.

"We talk about the squad a lot, we talk about being ready for your moment and whoever plays will have to be ready."

One of the many positives to come out of Saturday's thumping win over Leipzig was the performance of Luis Diaz.

The 29-year-old had cut a frustrated figure after a poor start to the season but scored three goals and set up another in one of his best performances since moving from Liverpool in 2025.

Despite swapping north London for the Bavarian capital back in 2023, former Tottenham captain Kane has seen plenty of Arsenal since joining Bayern.

Bayern faced the Gunners in two quarter-final legs in 2023-24, progressing by just a goal, but were outclassed in a 3-1 defeat in the league phase of last year's competition.

With domestic and international matches coming thick and fast, Kane has not had time to exchange pleasantries with any of his Gunners rivals.

"I spoke to them a bit in the international break previously and we knew the game was coming up, but I think we're all too busy right now to text each other, with a game every three days," he explained.

Saturday's thrashing of Leipzig once again showed the perennial German champions are a cut above their domestic rivals and Kane said Bayern were relishing a chance to take on Mikel Arteta's side.

Still smarting from last year's painful loss on penalties to Paris Saint-Germain, Arsenal have started strongly, winning 10 of 11 games in all competitions.

"It's a big game and we're playing against one of the best teams in Europe, you have to always enjoy these occasions," Kane said.

"We're testing ourselves against one of the best, we're here at home, the energy, the fans, it's going to be a special night."

Liverpool boss Andoni Iraola says it will be a "special" experience to go up against a Villarreal side managed by longtime friend Inigo Perez when the teams meet in the Champions League at Anfield on Tuesday.

The two Spaniards first knew each other as young players making their way at Athletic Bilbao before Iraola recruited Perez as his assistant coach when in charge of Madrid club Rayo Vallecano.

"For me it is a special game because Inigo is my friend," Iraola told a pre-match press conference at Anfield on Monday.

"We know each other since the academy years in Athletic Club, we played with each other in the first team. As soon as he retired, I was quick enough to grab him to help as an assistant. We've been through a lot of things together.

"It is a privilege for me to face him in a Champions League game. He knows me very well, he knows everything. It is a team that I follow, I know the players and it is going to be a little bit strange but in a good way."

Iraola, asked if he had spoken to Perez lately, said Tuesday's game had put a temporary restriction on their friendship.

"When these things happen (facing each other in a match), it is not good for relationships," the 44-year-old Iraola explained.

"I talk to him a lot, but when you know you are going to face each other, you stop talking because you leave the distance, you don't want to... Lately, it is probably the moment we have talked less.

"We normally call time to talk about La Liga, the Premier League, about football, other stuff, about our families. But now when the game gets closer, we haven't been in touch."

Iraola is in his first season in charge of Liverpool, having arrived at Anfield from Premier League rivals Bournemouth -- where he tried to bring Perez only for his friend to be denied a work permit by British authorities.

"We tried to take him to England, he was here but he couldn't work," said Iraola. "He didn't receive the work permit. We tried to do everything to convince the panel. I complained in the moment because I came with just two guys, but it has worked well for him also.

"Now he is coaching in the Champions League with Villarreal and I am so, so happy for him."
