For Italian football this has been a chastening year, yet, ahead of a likely frenzy before their transfer window shuts on September 1, Serie A clubs have spent the summer asserting their place in Europe's financial pecking order.

In both overall outlay and net spend, Serie A is a clear second among the "Big Five" leagues.

While fee structures, conditional payments and financial sleights-of-hand can make the precise transfer values a little hazy, German site Transfermarkt on Thursday put Italy's total outgoings at more than one billion euros ($1.165 billion), far ahead of La Liga, at three-quarters-of-a-billion, and then the Bundesliga.

In all, the 20 Serie A clubs are almost 430 million euros in the red this summer, against just under 300 million euros in Spain. Both the Bundesliga and French Ligue 1 are in profit.

Of course, the "Big Five" is a misleading phrase. European club football has become the Premier League and everyone else. English clubs have, so far, spent 3.2 billion euros, more than the other four league put together.

The second round of the Serie A season opens Friday with AC Milan, for now restored to their role as Italy's biggest spenders, hosting smartly-dressed yoyo club Venezia.

When Milan spent a reported 74 million euros to acquire Goncalo Ramos from Paris Saint-Germain, he became the most expensive Serie A signing since Juventus bought Dusan Vlahovic from Fiorentina five years earlier.

With Diego Moreira, coming from Strasbourg for 50 million euros, Milan have spent a total of almost 160 million euros, a whisker more than Juventus, with plenty of moves to come.

Under new boss Ruben Amorim, Milan opened the season with a 2-1 win at Torino.

On Thursday, Amorim did not rule out further recruits.

"We have to wait five more days until the transfer window closes," the Portuguese coach, who started last season in the Premier League with Manchester United, told his pre-match press conference.

"If someone arrives, it will be because they can help us both now and in the future."

- 'Things will take time' -

He made clear that the transfer market was not simply about spending to bring players in.

"It's impossible to train during the week with 27 players. Nobody is going to be prepared, nobody is going to be satisfied, so there are some players that if they stay, they will not be part of the squad," he said, when asked about reports that the club was trying to unload Fikayo Tomori, Youssouf Fofana and Santiago Gimenez.

After a summer in which Italy missed the World Cup, sparking a debate on the lack of talent in the national team, Amorim said clubs need to develop from within.

"We need to take time and believe in our young players," he said. "We are going to have some problems with young players in some games, but big surprises happen.

"Everyone wants everything really fast and I'm a little bit old school. I think a lot of things will take time."

Yet on the opening weekend, five of the six biggest spenders, Milan, champions Inter Milan, Juventus, Roma and Napoli all won. The exception were Fiorentina, trying to spend their way into the top end of the table, who crashed to Roma.

Lionel Messi's Inter Miami on Thursday appointed his fellow Argentine Cristian "Kily" Gonzalez as new head coach of the reigning Major League Soccer champions.

Gonzalez, who hails from superstar Messi's hometown Rosario, will attempt to turn around Miami's poor run of post-World Cup form under interim manager Guillermo Hoyos, AFP said.

"Inter Miami CF announced today that it has reached an agreement with Cristian Alberto 'Kily' Gonzalez to become the Club's new First Team head coach," said a club statement.

Hoyos will remain in post until his replacement's US work permit is approved, it added.

Gonzalez, 52, played left wing for European giants Inter Milan, Valencia and Zaragoza in a career that also included 56 international caps for Argentina between 1995-2005.

He moved into management in 2020, taking the helm at three Argentine club sides before his move to Miami.

The MLS Cup holders have endured a rough spell since the North American league's mid-season World Cup break, despite adding Brazil's Casemiro from Manchester United to a star-packed squad.

The side under Hoyos has lost four of its last five games, remaining second in the Eastern Conference but slipping 10 points adrift of leaders Nashville.

Hoyos on Thursday received a one-game ban and fine for the club's multiple violations of the league's late kick-off policy, his team repeatedly slow to return to the field after half-time breaks.

Hoyos, previously Miami's sporting director and a longtime friend of club captain and talisman Messi, only stepped into the temporary role in April after Javier Mascherano departed the club for "personal reasons."

"Inter Miami would like to especially highlight and thank Hoyos for his commitment and full dedication to the Club, demonstrated by his willingness to assume the role during this period, which began last April," said the club statement.

Tottenham Hotspur have signed Omar Marmoush ‌from Manchester City on a season-long loan, the Premier League club said on Thursday, with the deal including an obligation to make the Egypt forward's move permanent next summer.

British media said the obligation to buy is for a guaranteed £50 million ($67.96 million), with £10m more in add-ons.

"It feels amazing to be here. I'm so excited to get started with the team and I can't wait to meet the fans," the 27-year-old said in a statement.

"Tottenham Hotspur is one of the biggest clubs in England, if not ‌the world, and ‌the project was very attractive to me.

"I've ‌spoken with the head coach (Roberto De Zerbi), I loved what he had to say and I'm sure our passion for the game will go very well together."

Marmoush had a tale of two seasons at City, impressing in his debut 2024-25 campaign before finding consistent playing time elusive behind established players, including leading striker Erling Haaland, in Pep Guardiola's squad last season.

He scored only three goals ‌in 21 Premier League matches for ‌City last term, a far cry from the seven goals in ‌his first half-season at the Etihad Stadium.

De Zerbi, who took ‌over at Spurs in March and helped them avoid relegation, wanted to add forwards to a rebuilt squad after they added midfielders Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes plus defender Jan Paul van Hecke for a ‌combined £237 million.

Spurs have also signed Brazilian winger Savio, formerly known as Savinho, from City in a deal reportedly worth around £75 million and a further £10 million in add-ons.

Marmoush is a versatile forward capable of playing centrally or from the left wing, with the Egyptian expected to receive more playing opportunities under De Zerbi at Tottenham.

Spurs have needed more attacking quality after two difficult seasons in which they finished in a lowly 17th place.

Marmoush represented Egypt at the 2026 World Cup, playing five games, albeit without scoring, as they reached the last 16 before being eliminated by eventual runners-up Argentina.

Tottenham got off to a terrible start in their Premier League opener with a 3-0 drubbing at Brentford. They next host Newcastle United on Saturday.

More Than Goals: What Mourinho Wants from Real Madrid’s Mbappe

The 2026/27 season has barely begun and Real Madrid superstar Kylian Mbappe is already on top of La Liga's goalscoring charts ahead of the visit of promoted side Malaga on Sunday.

The French forward hit a hat-trick as Jose Mourinho's team steamrollered Real Sociedad on Wednesday, securing a second league win from two matches this season.

Mbappe, who won the league's top scorer trophy in both of his two prior seasons at the club, will be licking his lips ready for more with Malaga visiting the Santiago Bernabeu.

However, despite his superbly taken treble, Mourinho said goals are not enough for the forward, who he described as "incredible".

"I prefer 40 (goals) with titles than 60 without titles," Mourinho told reporters.

"I prefer 40 with a lot of work for the team than 60 just playing for himself, as often happens with forwards."

That was not a criticism of Mbappe this season but instead an encouragement for the Frenchman to maintain the level he has shown so far in terms of work-rate.

"I'm very happy with him," continued Mourinho. "From a technical standpoint, there's obviously nothing to say, but in terms of helping the group grow, taking responsibility, working...

"He arrived two days early, and two days early in that pre-season period can mean something positive."

Getting more out of Mbappe, beyond the slew of goals he is guaranteed to provide, may be the key to unlocking a team which boasts great quality and potential but has failed to win a major trophy in the last two seasons.

- New history to create -

"I'm really happy that he made history in the World Cup because there are 25 world champion players, but only one is eternal in football -- the player who has the most goals in the World Cup," said Mourinho, referring to Mbappe's exploits with France this summer.

The 27-year-old won the Golden Boot at the World Cup by notching 10 goals, meaning he has netted 22 at the tournament in his career, keeping him one above Lionel Messi, with both players surpassing Miroslav Klose's previous record of 16.

"I see him really hungry to make history with Real Madrid," continued Mourinho.

Since Mbappe joined Real Madrid from Paris Saint-Germain in 2024, he has watched his former side go on to win the Champions League twice, while Los Blancos' rivals Barcelona have claimed both La Liga titles in that time.

Madrid failed to win a single trophy last season and Mbappe's only silverware with the club is the 2024 UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Intercontinental Cup, despite scoring 86 goals in just 103 appearances for the club in his first two campaigns.

"This year, we have to win, that's what we all want, and that's what we're going to do," said a determined Mbappe on Real Madrid TV at the start of the season.

The way to do that, Mourinho believes, is through teamwork.

"I always say that with these players, you have to teach them to play as a team and teach them very little from an individual perspective," added the veteran Portuguese coach.

Mourinho, 63, may have the aura and steel needed to bring the club's biggest stars together and get them pulling in the same direction, despite his own struggles in recent years away from Europe's biggest clubs.

During a chaotic 2025/26 campaign it did not always feel like that was the case at Madrid, as Xabi Alonso and then Alvaro Arbeloa came and went, Mbappe's goals alone unable to keep them afloat.

Malaga will provide another opportunity for Mbappe to add to his ever-growing numbers on Sunday, but Mourinho will be looking for more than another hat-trick.
