He made ‌his Ligue 1 debut in 2024 and won eight trophies, including two ‌Champions League titles and two Ligue 1 crowns.

David Beckham said Lionel Messi's "legacy will live forever" after the Argentina legend announced his retirement from international football.

Messi on Monday revealed he had called time on his remarkable career with Argentina after 207 caps and 125 goals.

The 39-year-old won the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and his last game for his country was Argentina's World Cup final defeat against Spain in July.

Messi's brilliance for Argentina and Barcelona made him one of the world's greatest ever players.

Former England captain Beckham has had a close-up view of Messi's career as an opponent and now as co-owner of the forward's current side Inter Miami.

"This is the moment we get to look back on and realize how grateful we were to witness the greatness of a young kid with a dream," Beckham wrote on Instagram on Tuesday.

"Leo, you have been a credit to yourself, your family, your friends and your country. Leading by example and creating inspiration for millions of children not just in Argentina but around the whole world.

"Leo, you delivered the greatest gift to your country and, for that, your legacy will live forever. Congratulations on all you achieved for Argentina."

Manchester City hope to seal a blockbuster move for Enzo Fernandez, while Arsenal have their sights set on Julian Alvarez in the final hours before the transfer window closes.

With Premier League clubs unable to sign players until January once Tuesday's 2200 GMT deadline passes, City, Arsenal and company have one last chance to improve their squads.

Frantic last-minute spending is on the agenda as City try to finally seal a swoop for Chelsea midfielder Fernandez.

Chelsea value Fernandez at around £120 million ($162 million) and City have yet to match that hefty price tag.

A reunion with City's former Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca might suit Fernandez, who had angered the Blues last season by expressing interest in joining Real Madrid.

Maresca is keen to land the Argentine after the recent sale of influential World Cup winner Rodri to Barcelona, as well as the departures of fellow midfielders Bernardo Silva, Nico Gonzalez and Tijjani Reijnders.

Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has left Fernandez out of his squad for the last two games as speculation swirls over his potential switch to the Etihad Stadium.

City are also expected to announce the signing of Senegal midfielder Iliman Ndiaye from Everton in a deal worth £65 million.

Tottenham had been linked with Ndiaye, but City appear to have won the race for the 26-year-old's signature.

Champions Arsenal can make a major splash if they can land Argentina striker Alvarez.

Alvarez reportedly prefers a move to Barcelona but, while Atletico do not want to sell to their La Liga rivals, they could be persuaded to do a £128 million deal with Arsenal.

- Statement of intent -

Alvarez has missed several training sessions and was not part of the Atletico team that beat Sevilla last weekend.

Landing the former City star would be a significant statement of intent from Arsenal, who are looking to win the club's first back-to-back English titles since the 1930s.

Meanwhile, Arsenal striker Ethan Nwaneri is lined up for a season-long loan at Borussia Dortmund.

Liverpool splashed out on France forward Bradley Barcola on Monday, spending £123 million to lure him from Paris Saint-Germain.

But Reds boss Andoni Iraola still wants another winger as the club adjusts to life without Mohamed Salah, who joined Trabzonspor in August after ending his iconic Liverpool career.

Crystal Palace's Ismaila Sarr and Brighton's Yankuba Minteh are on Iraola's wanted list.

If Liverpool sign either of those targets, it could clear the way for Dutch forward Cody Gakpo to leave Anfield amid interest from City and Tottenham.

Harvey Elliott is due to leave Liverpool, with a loan at Valencia lined up for the playmaker after his disappointing stint at Aston Villa last term.

Tottenham are keen to bring in Chelsea winger Mykhailo Mudryk on loan after missing out on Ndiaye.

City winger Jack Grealish is set to rejoin Everton on loan after spending last season with David Moyes's men.

Grealish has fallen out of favor at City over the last two years, but impressed at Everton before suffering a season-ending foot injury in January.

Everton are also on the verge of signing United States forward Folarin Balogun from Monaco in a £40 million deal.

Newcastle striker Nicolas Woltemade is set to join Juventus on loan.

Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz won his first singles match in 139 days, while Aryna Sabalenka got her bid for a third straight US Open title off to a winning start on Monday to light up the second day of the year's final Grand Slam.

Former champion Iga Swiatek and last year's runner-up Amanda Anisimova also advanced with impressive victories while Stefanos Tsitsipas served up an upset by knocking out 10th seed Arthur Fils on a sunny afternoon in New York.

Alcaraz's condition was one of the tournament's biggest question marks after his long spell out due to a wrist injury but the Spaniard enjoyed a comfortable return to action with a 6-4 6-4 6-4 win over Russian Roman Safiullin.

"You don't know what's going to happen in the match after 4-1/2 months almost. You don't know what's going to happen ‌in your body, ‌in your mind, everything. It's totally different," Alcaraz told reporters.

"But I just tried to play ‌one game at a time and tried to feel good, to enjoy playing points, feeling the love from the people. Hopefully they enjoyed it."

The second seed's win ensured some star power remained in the men's field.

Novak Djokovic's shock defeat on Sunday left another hole in a men's draw already without injured world number one Jannik Sinner.

SABALENKA, ANISIMOVA WIN EASY

Earlier at Arthur Ashe Stadium, Sabalenka looked on her way to ending a frustrating patch of poor form with a 6-2 6-4 win over Colombia's Camila Osorio that earned her a clash with Russian Polina Iatcenko in the second round.

"I'm happy with my performance," said Sabalenka, who has not reached a title match since triumphing at Indian Wells and Miami to complete the 'Sunshine Double' in March.

"She's a tough opponent, makes you work really hard to ‌get every point."

American Anisimova, whom Sabalenka beat in the final last year, got ‌her campaign off to a good start on her 25th birthday with a 6-1 6-3 win over compatriot Ashlyn Krueger at Louis Armstrong Stadium.

Greece's ‌Tsitsipas upset Cincinnati winner Fils 4-6 7-6(3) 6-1 6-4 in an early match on the same court, booking a second-round ‌meeting with South African Lloyd Harris.

"It's very easy to not feel confident, especially when you haven't beaten top players in a long time," Tsitsipas said. "I'm ecstatic about today. It's an important, good victory for me, for my confidence."

MUCHOVA, NOSKOVA GO THROUGH

Seven matches that were suspended on the outer courts on Sunday due to rain resumed on Monday, as organizers benefited from the extended three-day first-round schedule after expanding the main draw to ‌15 days in 2025.

Wimbledon finalist Karolina Muchova got the day underway on the Grandstand with a routine 6-3 6-0 win over Sinja Kraus and the Czech seventh seed plays Briton Katie Boulter next.

Linda Noskova, who defeated compatriot Muchova in the All England Club final, downed American Katie Volynets 7-5 6-1 to stay on track for back-to-back major titles.

It was a good day for the Americans on the largest of the outdoor courts. Emma Navarro ground out a 7-6(6) 6-7(1) 6-3 win over Frenchwoman Lois Boisson, while Taylor Townsend defeated Poland's Maja Chwalinska 6-2 6-3.

China's Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen, who was forced to go through qualifying only two years after reaching the quarter-finals in New York, beat Kristina Liutova 4-6 6-3 6-1.

Zheng's progress has stalled and her ranking has plummeted since an elbow injury forced her to undergo surgery last year.

Polish eighth seed Swiatek, the 2022 champion, beat China's Wang Xiyu 6-2 6-3 to kick off the night session on the second showcourt.

Another former winner, Stan Wawrinka, fell to Italy's Matteo Berrettini 7-6(4) 7-6(3) 6-0. The 41-year-old Swiss bid goodbye to the Grand Slam for the final time before his retirement at the end of the season.

Home hope Ben Shelton overcame Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor 1-6 6-1 7-6(3) 6-2 before Frances Tiafoe prevailed 6-4 4-6 3-6 6-3 6-4 in an all-American clash with Martin Damm.

Naomi Osaka unveiled another bold Grand Slam walk-on outfit before showing plenty of fight for a 7-6(6) 7-6(3) victory over unseeded Russian Anastasia Zakharova in a late-finishing match.
