Tottenham Hotspur winger Mykhailo Mudryk injured his ankle in training, according to British media reports, with manager Roberto De Zerbi hoping the Ukraine international can return as soon as possible after this latest setback.

The 25-year-old joined Spurs on a season-long loan from rivals Chelsea on transfer deadline day and made his debut off the bench in last weekend's goalless draw at Nottingham Forest.

Mudryk is expected to be sidelined until after the international break, said the media reports.

Mudryk previously played under De Zerbi on Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk before joining Chelsea in January 2023. He struggled to establish himself at Stamford Bridge, however, and his career was put on hold after an adverse analytical finding for meldonium in an anti-doping test in 2024.

The Football Association handed him a four-year ban, but he appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport and his suspension was later reduced following an agreement between the FA and the World Anti-Doping Agency.

"(With) Mudryk, it was a stupid injury and we hope he can come back as soon as possible. For him and for us," Reuters quoted De Zerbi as telling reporters on Friday.

"For him because he suffered too much and for us because we lost an important player.

"He played 15 minutes in Nottingham, he played well, but it's in the normal process when one player doesn't play for a long time."

Mudryk made 73 appearances for Chelsea, scoring 10 goals and registering 11 assists before his move to Spurs.

Spurs have made a disappointing start to the season, taking just one point from their opening three Premier League matches to sit 17th in the table. They host Everton later on Saturday.

Ferrari's Charles Leclerc led the way in US Grand Prix practice on Friday, with Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli a close second ahead of a race that could make him Formula One's youngest champion.

Leclerc set the pace of one minute 35.291 seconds in a sunny second practice at Austin's Circuit of the Americas after also lapping fastest in the earlier session with a time of 1:36.052 in his upgraded car on a bumpy track.

"It has been a very clean Friday for me, but the others seem to be gaining more than us from Friday to Saturday and seeing the little gap there is, it is not going to be so easy tomorrow," Reuters quoted him as saying.

Antonelli, the 20-year-old who must win on Sunday to have a first chance of taking the title, was fifth in session one when Red Bull's Max Verstappen was closest to 2024 winner Leclerc.

The Italian, who complained about his seat moving, then improved to second place and ended the day 0.042 off the pace.

"We didn't have the best FP1 session, with the car balance not in a great place," said Antonelli, who is 102 points clear of closest rival and teammate George Russell. "We were able to improve that for FP2 though and we took a good step forward."

Verstappen, winner in Austin last year, is chasing his third successive victory after Singapore and Malaysia. He ended second practice as the third fastest and 0.189 off Leclerc with Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton fourth and Russell fifth.

"We tried a different direction with the set-up, but I wasn’t comfortable in the car, especially over the bumps," said Hamilton. "Charles showed there’s pace there, so we need to understand how we can get the car into a better place on my side."

Russell had a black-and-white warning flag for an incident with Leclerc that led to the Monegasque going off track early in the second session, but stewards decided against any further action.

McLaren's reigning champion Lando Norris was third fastest, 0.245 off the pace, in first practice and then seventh later on and behind Racing Bulls' Liam Lawson.

"I think Lando is definitely a lot quicker than his lap time," McLaren boss Zak Brown told Sky Sports television. "He didn't get his third sector in. His first two sectors were very strong.

"So I think we are much quicker than we looked. I think Ferrari's lap time, Mercedes' lap time, there or thereabouts."

Norris sounded less sure: "The pace is not bad. We seem a step away from Red Bull and Ferrari, probably Mercedes as well, but the car is very difficult to drive, too difficult to be consistent and get a nice feeling consistently."

Teammate Oscar Piastri was eighth fastest, with Red Bull's Isack Hadjar ninth and Haas's Oliver Bearman completing the top 10.

Audi's Gabriel Bortoleto, Racing Bulls' Arvid Lindblad and Alpine's Franco Colapinto all collected grid drops for changes to their power units.

Lindblad will drop five places from wherever he qualifies on Saturday, Colapinto 10 places and Bortoleto 20.

Williams looked to be struggling, with Carlos Sainz 20th and Alex Albon 22nd in practice two.
"The car is a mess right now. It's a mess. I have no confidence in the rear," said Sainz over the team radio.

Manchester United manager Michael Carrick said on Friday he is convinced he can arrest his side's slump as he refused to confirm whether Bruno Fernandes will remain as the club's captain.

Carrick labelled a 4-1 thrashing by Champions League debutants Como on Wednesday, which stretched United's winless run to seven games, as "unacceptable".

After a successful interim spell in charge in the second half of last season, the former England midfielder was appointed on a permanent basis just five months ago.

But his position is at risk ahead of Sunday's visit of Bournemouth to Old Trafford.

United sit 13th in the table after their worst start in the Premier League era.

Carrick's men were also dumped out of the League Cup by Brighton and have lost two of their opening three Champions League games.

"We're in a moment where it's not gone well, so we need to show exactly what it means. Respect this football club, respect what it takes to be here, respect what it takes to win, what you have to do to win," Carrick said in his pre-match press conference.

"We've kind of lost our way a little bit if I'm totally honest and we'll get it back. I'm totally confident we'll get it back."

- Fernandes decision swerved -

Carrick's tactics were publicly questioned by Fernandes after the Como defeat for being too passive.

Despite being repeatedly probed on whether last season's Premier League player of the year will retain the armband, Carrick refused to clarify the Portuguese midfielder's future.

"The most important thing for me is the team, first and foremost, is the squad, is the dynamics in the squad," added Carrick.

"Again, it's about the football club. I always do what's best for the football club."

Fernandes's criticism came just over a week after defender Lisandro Martinez took aim at the club's board for a lack of investment in the transfer market.

Carrick is just the latest manager struggling to turn around the ailing fortunes of the 20-time English champions since his former boss Alex Ferguson retired in 2013.

United have not won either the Premier League or Champions League in the 13 years since under seven different managers.

Appointed on a short-term deal in January, Carrick led the Red Devils back into the Champions League for the first time in three years with a third-placed finish in the Premier League.

But their only two victories in 11 matches in all competitions this season have come against newly-promoted Ipswich and Azerbaijani side Sabah.

"Recently we haven't had a good time. I totally accept that. We had five months of relative success in a spell where I was happy with a lot of things we were doing as a team," Carrick said in an opening address to his media duties.

"We haven't done well enough lately. We've had a spell we're really not happy with. Wednesday was a bad night for a lot of reasons... it was really unacceptable."

"The supporters have to make the effort and spend the money to come and watch us. To have the feeling we all had after the game was a tough moment."

Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler said he had "too much respect" for Carrick to comment on speculation he is among the candidates to become the next United manager.

Hurzeler's side have plundered 23 goals in their opening seven Premier League games to sit third in the table.

Former Chelsea and Tottenham coach Antonio Conte also stated he is not in "advanced" negotiations with any club.

Conte, who has been out of work since leaving Napoli at the end of last season, has been repeatedly linked with United over the past decade.

"I will take the time I need to consider how and when to return to management," the Italian posted on social media.

"It will be a carefully considered decision, one I will make when I believe the conditions are right."

Former Newcastle manager Eddie Howe is another of the leading candidates should Carrick be replaced.
