The National Center for Wildlife (NCW), in collaboration with NEOM, has documented the first birth of a striped hyena following the reintroduction of two breeding pairs into NEOM Nature Reserve. The birth is a positive indication of the hyenas’ successful adaptation to the reserve and their ability to reproduce in the wild.

According to a press release issued by the NCW, the birth marks another milestone in NCW’s wildlife breeding and reintroduction programs, which include dedicated efforts for predator species aimed at restoring their natural roles within ecosystems.

Prior to the release, two pairs of striped hyenas were selected and underwent a rehabilitation program at one of NCW’s wildlife care facilities, SPA reported.

The program included veterinary examinations, health monitoring, and preparation for their transition into the wild. A specialized NCW team also conducted a field assessment of the reintroduction site to verify its readiness and ecological suitability for the hyenas.

NCW CEO Dr. Mohammed Qurban said: "This is the first striped hyena birth following their reintroduction, and it marks an important milestone in the center’s wildlife breeding and reintroduction programs.”

He emphasized that reintroducing species into their natural habitats represents an advanced stage in establishing populations capable of surviving and reproducing in the wild and restoring their ecological roles.

Striped hyenas play an important ecological role by feeding on carcasses and carrion. Their populations have declined in parts of their natural range due to several threats, particularly hunting and poisoning.

A specialized medical team from the Ministry of Interior's Medical Services successfully performed Saudi Arabia's first minimally invasive robot-assisted lumbar spine surgery at Prince Naif Center for Medical Excellence and Innovation, reported the Saudi Press Agency on Wednesday.

The procedure was performed on a patient suffering from severe degeneration of the lumbar vertebrae using the ExcelsiusGPS robotic surgical system.

The advanced technology enabled the patient to regain mobility and walk within the first hour after surgery while minimizing damage to surrounding tissues.

The ExcelsiusGPS system combines advanced surgical navigation with a robotic arm, allowing surgeons to plan procedures and precisely guide surgical instruments during operations.

The achievement marks one of the first milestones for Prince Naif Center for Medical Excellence and Innovation, which operates under the Ministry of Interior's Medical Services program responsible for operating medical cities.

The center aims to advance spinal surgery services by integrating cutting-edge medical technologies and drawing on national expertise and international experience to improve surgical practices and facilitate knowledge transfer, ultimately enhancing the quality of specialized healthcare provided to beneficiaries.

Saudi Arabia stressed its commitment to advancing environmental action at the national, regional, and international levels through the Saudi Green Initiative and the National Environment Strategy, supporting environmental protection, natural resource conservation, and environmental sustainability.

It made its statement at the 28th Meeting of Ministers Responsible for Environmental Affairs in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, held in Bahrain.

Deputy Minister for Environment at the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture Dr. Osama Faqeeha highlighted the achievements resulting from these efforts.

This includes a fourfold increase in the area of terrestrial and marine protected areas, a nearly 300% rise in waste recycling, more than one million hectares of degraded land rehabilitated, more than 180 million trees planted, and over 10,000 endangered wildlife species released into the wild.

Faqeeha commended GCC countries for supporting the Middle East Green Initiative, which has attracted the participation of 35 countries.

He noted that the Kingdom’s hosting of the 16th Conference of the Parties (COP16) to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) in Riyadh marked a turning point for the convention. The conference adopted 37 resolutions and launched key initiatives, most notably Business4Land (B4L) and the Riyadh Global Drought Resilience Partnership.

Faqeeha added that the COP16 presidency continued to follow up on the implementation of these decisions ahead of the 17th session, held in Mongolia in September. He also noted that more than 200 initiatives worldwide had joined the Riyadh Action Agenda.

Faqeeha welcomed Egypt hosting the 18th Conference of the Parties (COP18) in 2028, as well as the Kingdom hosting the upcoming meeting of environment ministers from GCC member states.

Air pollution in part of Singapore hit the country's "very high" band on Wednesday, while East Timor shut schools, as haze from forest fires raging in Indonesia causes a regional crisis.

The blazes in Indonesia have burned through hundreds of thousands of hectares of forest and plantations, sickened local residents and sent thick haze across the region.

Air pollution in western Singapore on Wednesday hit "very high" -- the country's top level -- the National Environment Agency said.

It recorded levels of tiny particulates capable of penetrating the blood and lungs -- known as PM2.5 -- at 288 micrograms per cubic meter, vastly exceeding the World Health Organization's recommended average annual exposure of five micrograms.

Indonesia regularly battles wildfires during the dry season, but has seen stronger-than-usual blazes this year as a powerful El Nino cycle brings drought.

Experts also point to slash-and-burn land-clearing practices that have changed the naturally fire-resistant landscape of Sumatra and Borneo islands.

The haze has drifted into neighboring Singapore and Malaysia, and as far afield as the Philippines and East Timor, which said it would shut schools nationwide for three days from Thursday.

The closures were necessary "as a preventive measure to protect the health of students, teachers, and other members of the educational community, given current air quality conditions", the government said.
