The European Union delegation in Israel on Monday cancelled its Europe Day diplomatic reception over the planned participation of far-right Israeli minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, who criticized the decision as a form of "undemocratic silencing".

"Regrettably, this year we have decided to cancel the diplomatic reception, as we do not want to offer a platform to someone whose views contradict the values the EU stands for," the delegation said in a statement.

Brussels marks May 9 as "Europe Day", honoring a 1950 French declaration that led to the founding of the body that became the EU. National Security Minister Ben-Gvir was set to represent the Israeli government at this year's event.

The EU reaction, however, underlines the diplomatic upsets facing the religious-nationalist coalition led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, whose alliance with Ben-Gvir and fellow pro-settler leader Bezalel Smotrich has caused unease even among Israel's international allies.

Ben-Gvir, head of the far-right Jewish Power party, was convicted in 2007 of racist incitement against Arabs and backing a group considered by Israel and the United States to be a terrorist organization.

"It is a shame that the European Union, which claims to represent the values of democracy and multiculturalism, is engaging in undiplomatic silencing," Ben-Gvir said in a statement.

"Friends know how to express criticism and true friends also know how to hear it," he said.

Netanyahu is himself still waiting for an invitation to visit Washington, and opposition leader Yair Lapid accused the government of "picking unnecessary fights".

"Managing Israel's foreign relations is a complex matter that requires expertise and a smart approach," he said in a tweet.

A container ship has sunk near the Strait of Hormuz after being hit by a projectile, while a separate dry bulk carrier damaged in an earlier attack is also reported to be sinking, maritime security sources said on Wednesday.

The Singapore-flagged GFS Pride container ship, with a small 2,824 TEU (20-ft equivalent unit) capacity, had sunk, the sources said.

"Commercial vessel 'GFS PRIDE' reported sunk with floating containers ... mariners cautioned," the Hydrographer of Pakistan said in a navigational warning to ships dated October 14.

The loss of the GFS Pride marks the second vessel to sink since the US-Iran war began on February 28, according to data from UN shipping agency, the International Maritime Organization.

Iran is deploying new tactics to target ships sailing through the Strait of Hormuz as it seeks to keep oil prices high and influence the US midterm elections, two senior Iranian officials told Reuters.

In a separate incident, the Antigua and Barbuda-flagged Cape Dao was reported to be sinking close to the strait after being struck by a projectile on September 23, the sources added.

"The Antigua & Barbuda flagged bulk carrier CAPE DAO, originally hit on the 23 September, is reported to be sinking after an unsuccessful rescue attempt," British maritime risk management group Vanguard said in a note on Wednesday.

A cargo ship has sunk after hitting a naval mine in the Strait of Hormuz, Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps navy said. It was the first time Iran has reported a ship sinking after hitting a mine during the war.

There were few details, including about the fate of the crew. State TV quoted a Guard statement as saying that the ship was traveling on what it called an illegal and dangerous route when it hit the mine Wednesday morning.

It said the ship was carrying 2,500 containers when it first caught fire.

Iran has repeatedly warned ships against trying to transit the strait without its approval.

The US military has been guiding ships through the strait on a route off Oman on the far side.

There was no immediate verification of the sinking and no report by the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations monitor.

A federal judge blocked on Tuesday the White House from banning CNN, MS Now and Politico journalists, following President Donald Trump's decision to ban the news outlets last month.

District Judge Timothy Kelly ruled that the Trump administration must grant the journalists access to the White House while the lawsuit filed by the three outlets against the ban proceeds.

Kelly said the outlets were "likely to succeed not only on their due process claim, but also on their two First Amendment claims."

The First Amendment upholds the right to a free press.

Trump barred CNN, MS NOW and Politico from the White House on September 18 for distributing what he called "fake news" and "fiction and lies."

The three outlets filed a joint lawsuit seeking a preliminary injunction against the ban.

A court order temporarily restored the White House credentials of the journalists, AFP reported. That ban was set to expire Tuesday.

"The Court will extend the relief it already ordered, which will continue to preserve the status quo while this case proceeds," Kelly wrote in an opinion accompanying Tuesday's order.

"President Trump likely banned Plaintiffs from the White House because he believes that their reporting is generally inaccurate and biased against him," Kelly added.

Trump has long attacked media that have aired critical coverage of him, repeatedly blasting the press as the "enemy of the people."
