Iran’s top diplomat, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, has confirmed receiving a message from the White House. He, however, stressed that Houthi attacks in the Red Sea will continue “until the end of the Gaza war.”
The foreign minister warned the US, UK, and their ally Israel to stop the attacks on the Houthis and the war in Gaza.
“Iran severely warns the US and Britain to stop the war against Yemen and also warns the US and Israel to end the war in Gaza,” Amir-Abdollahian said in a joint press conference with his Indian counterpart Subrahmanyam Jaishankar in Tehran on Monday.
The minister strongly affirmed Tehran’s commitment to maritime security in the region.
Amir-Abdollahian mentioned that his meeting with Jaishankar covered recent events in the Palestinian territories.
He said that both him and the Indian foreign minister stressed the need to “stop the war in Gaza and the terrible events in the region.”
Amir-Abdollahian added that Iran and India agree on the importance of preventing the war from escalating.
Moreover, the Iranian top diplomat revealed that Tehran had sent messages through Switzerland to US officials and the White House, urging them to end the Gaza conflict.
He added that the US has no right to talk about preventing the war’s expansion in the region while simultaneously escalating conflicts in the Red Sea and attacking Yemen.
During a recent visit to Tehran, Houthi spokesman Mohammed Abdulsalam had assured Iranians that maritime security will not be compromised, stressing the importance of ensuring safe navigation, said Amir-Abdollahian.
He also cast doubt on US claims of fighting terrorism, saying the US cannot claim to be fighting ISIS as it created the terrorist group itself.
He also said that Washington cannot call for restraint as tensions rise in the region and while it supports Israel’s war in Gaza.
Amir-Abdollahian reminded the US and its Secretary of State Antony Blinken that the Gaza war cannot end through military options, advising US officials not to tie the security and national interests of the American people to the fate of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
