Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy replaced his top army general on Thursday in what amounts to a major shake-up of the country's war strategy as the conflict with Russia grinds into its third year.
In a post on X, Zelenskiy said he thanked Gen. Valerii Zaluzhnyi — a military leader popular with troops and the general public — for his two years of service as commander-in-chief. “The time for such a renewal is now," Zelenskiy said.
He appointed Сol. Gen. Oleksandr Syrskyi, the commander of Ukraine’s ground forces, to lead the army.
Earlier, Zelenskiy said he met Zaluzhnyi and that the time had come for changes in the military leadership, but that Kyiv's top general should remain "on his team".
The statement follows days of speculation that Zelenskyi was considering dismissing his popular army chief.
"We discussed what renewal the Armed Forces of Ukraine need. We also discussed who could be in the renewed leadership of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The time for this renewal is now," Zelenskiy's statement said on Telegram.
In a separate statement, Zaluzhnyi said he had an "important and serious conversation" with Zelenskiy and that a decision had been made to change battlefield tactics and strategy.
"The tasks of 2022 are different from the tasks of 2024. Therefore, everyone must change and adapt to new realities as well. To win together too," his statement said on Telegram.
