NATO will launch a strategic airlift fleet of Airbus A400M transport planes and add one aircraft to its existing fleet of A330 MRTT tanker planes, Secretary General Mark Rutte said on the sidelines of a NATO summit in Ankara on Tuesday. He was speaking at a defense industry gathering where allies unveiled arms deals worth billions of dollars to show they are heeding US calls to spend more to defend Europe before joining President Donald Trump for the summit starting in the evening.

"It is about air power, which is essential to strengthen our deterrence and defense," Rutte said.

The MRTT project has nine A330s, which can double as troop or passenger aircraft, based at Eindhoven, Netherlands. By adding another tanker, the military alliance will move closer to plugging gaps left in its defense plans after the United States reduced its contributions.

NATO is seeking to expand the fleet to 12 in the longer run. Belgium, Czechia, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway and Sweden participate in the programme.

The US has not publicly disclosed details of its cuts, but they range from refuelling aircraft to fighters, drones and ships, according to figures provided by a military source.

Trump has long accused European governments of over-relying on the US to defend them through NATO.

Airbus, which builds both the A400M airlifter and the A330 jet on which the tanker is based, said the shared A400M fleet would involve Belgium, Britain, France, Spain, Türkiye, Croatia, and Poland.

The announcement is a boost for the A400M, which was designed to meet a European shortfall in military cargo and troop transport to rugged areas. Exports have been slow to materialise, leaving doubts over its long-term future.

Airbus earlier this year toned down earlier warnings to investors over the long-term future of A400M production.

The new pool would initially be drawn from aircraft already in operation and then others in the industrial pipeline. Finally, a spokesperson said, the operation may eventually lead to new orders though it was premature to speculate on how many or when.

Tech billionaire Elon Musk will make a return to officially advising US President Donald Trump's government by co-leading what the Pentagon called a study on the future of war.

Musk served as the head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) before departing in May 2025, having publicly fallen out with Trump, said AFP.

In a speech at the Quantico military base, Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth said "Project Meridian" will be "an effort led by America's best minds to study the future of warfare".

"We are leveraging a unique source of American advantage, one our adversaries do not have: our innovators, our senior leaders and our technologists," Hegseth said.

Musk will be a co-leader of Project Meridian alongside Palmer Luckey, the 34-year-old co-founder of defense technology company Anduril Industries, and Newt Gingrich, the 83-year-old Republican former House speaker.

Musk threw his support behind Trump and helped his return to the White House, but the men later had a high-profile blow-up over the president's spending legislation.

He later resumed giving to Republican causes, including multimillion-dollar donations to individual candidates and conservative political groups.

Hegseth said the project's purpose is to "creatively look to the future and identify the domains that we must conquer and capabilities we must master".

Project members will include hand-picked private sector leaders and subject matter experts from across the innovation, academic and policy ecosystems.

Hegseth said he has directed Project Meridian's findings to be completed and submitted within 120 days.

Türkiye's intelligence agency has captured a key suspect from a deadly 2013 attack near the Syrian border while he was attempting to flee to Europe, state media said Thursday, citing a security source.

The twin bombings in the southern Reyhanli district, which killed 53 people, was the deadliest attack in Türkiye linked to fallout from Syria's civil war that began two years earlier, said AFP.

Omar al-Khatib, a Syrian who was the subject of an Interpol red notice, is believed to have coordinated between the attackers and intelligence officials loyal to Syria's then president Bashar al-Assad, Anadolu news agency reported.

Türkiye's National Intelligence Organization (MIT) detained al-Khatib as he prepared to leave for Europe by sea, Anadolu said, without saying exactly where or when he was caught.

Ankara blamed Turkish extremist groups allegedly backed by the Syrian government for the Reyhanli attack, accusations Damascus denied.

Türkiye was a strong supporter of Syrian rebels seeking to overthrow Assad and has hosted millions of Syrians who fled the conflict.

Since Assad's ouster nearly two years ago, Ankara has built close ties with Syria's new leadership under President Ahmed al-Sharaa.

Explosions were heard overnight in Ethiopia's capital Addis Ababa, three diplomatic sources told Reuters.

A source linked to the opposition alliance that has been fighting federal forces in northern Ethiopia since last week said the alliance had carried out several drone strikes in Addis Ababa, including some targeting the military's headquarters there.

Reuters could ‌not independently ‌verify the claim.

If confirmed, ‌the strikes would mark the first known drone attack by anti-government forces on the Ethiopian capital.

Spokespeople for Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's office, the federal government and the military did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Last week's clashes in northern Ethiopia ‌were the biggest escalation ‌of violence in Ethiopia since the end ‌of a 2020-2022 civil war.

The national intelligence ‌service announced on Wednesday that it was banning for an indefinite period all drone flights over Addis Ababa and its surroundings for ‌security reasons.

Opposition alliance forces were not previously known to operate armed drones. However, there is growing evidence they may possess at least some drone capability.

On Tuesday, a pro-government militia in the northern region of Tigray said it had captured drone frames and batteries from forces linked to the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF), one of the alliance's main members.

Reuters could not independently verify that claim.
