Spain's Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said Saturday firefighters were working to "save lives" in the wildfires raging west of Madrid, warning of a "complex" struggle with high winds expected.

The fires in the parched countryside have forced 70,000 people to flee their homes, the government said, in what officials have called the region's worst fire on record.

"Our priority, our thinking, our aim is for your lives, to save your lives and protect inhabited areas," Sanchez told reporters in the village of Cenicientos in the fire zone.

"We are going to have some complex hours ahead because although the temperatures have gone down, we do not know exactly how the wind will develop, how strong it will be."

In the town of Brunete, local mayor Mar Nicolas told AFP she was "very worried for the residents who are suffering from these terrible fires".

"Every year there are fires, but this one has been tremendous," she said. "It is a catastrophe."

Thick grey smoke filled the sky west of the capital and the smell of burning reached the streets of central Madrid in the morning, itching residents' throats and forcing them to keep their windows closed. The health ministry on X advised people to avoid staying outside for long periods because of bad air quality.

Evacuees from surrounding villages sheltered in sports halls around the capital.

Jacqueline Villafranca, 38, from Peru, told AFP she was evacuated in about an hour on Friday evening from the village of Navalagamella.

When the fire alerts sounded on telephones, "I thought everything was going to burn, the house and everything," she said.

She was brought by coach with her husband and two daughters, aged 16 and two, to the northern Madrid suburb of Alcobendas, where they sat dozing and eating snacks in a municipal gymnasium.

"Yesterday was unbearable. My daughter came home from holiday camp and said: 'Mum, I can't open my eyes, my eyes are burning'" from the smoke, she said.

"And then the alerts started to sound and I evacuated."

- 'Opportunity' to beat fire -

Spain's government delegate to Madrid Francisco Martin told journalists on Saturday another 25,000 people had been evacuated from villages near Madrid, bringing the total who have fled to 70,000, according to central government figures.

Easing heat overnight offered a "window of opportunity this weekend to fight... this very serious fire", Sanchez said.

But Martin earlier warned that "erratic gusts" of wind were forecast.

Two separate wildfires in the Madrid region combined on Friday to form one huge blaze, which threatened to merge with a third near Avila in the neighboring Castilla y Leon region.

The government delegation in Madrid said on X early Saturday that overnight conditions had "greatly aided the fight against the wildfires, which advanced little and decreased in intensity".

It listed at least 10 villages in the Madrid region that had been evacuated and three where residents had been ordered to stay at home.

The Madrid regional government said on X that more than 2,000 people were being looked after in 14 emergency evacuation centers.

In the town of El Escorial northwest of Madrid, the historic monastery was shrouded in smoke, an AFP reporter saw.

So far this year fires have burned more than 168,000 hectares in Spain, according to the EU's European Forest Fire Information System.

Spain recorded its worst wildfire season in recent history in 2025, when more than 393,000 hectares were destroyed, EFFIS said.

A fighter jet crashed in eastern France, leaving at least one person dead, the French armed forces said on Wednesday.

The Mirage 2000D combat aircraft was returning from a mission when it crashed late Tuesday evening, according to the armed forces ministry.

The plane's crew consisted of a fighter pilot and a weapons systems officer from the French Air and Space Force. One body has been recovered and a search for the second crew member is ongoing.

The accident happened near the town of Rogeville, about 18 kilometers (11 miles) northwest of the city of Nancy. Local prefect Yves Seguy told reporters that a wooded area where the plane crashed was searched overnight in adverse weather.

An investigation into the cause of the crash has been opened, The Associated Press reported.

The plane was attached to the nearby 133 Nancy-Ochey air base. Col. Ludovic Humbert, the base commandant, said the weapons systems officer was a seasoned soldier who was teaming up with a young pilot. The plane had begun its final approach as it returned to base from a night training mission when the crash happened.

The Mirage 2000D specializes in ground-attack missions. A two-seat aircraft, it is designed to operate in complex environments, the ministry said. It supports conventional air operations and power-projection missions.

Four people were killed in a wave of Russian strikes across Ukraine on Wednesday, the government said, as US envoy Steve Witkoff headed to Saint Petersburg for talks.

Ukraine's Prime Minister Sergiy Koretsky said two people were killed when a drone hit a 24-storey building in the capital, Kyiv, while two others were killed in the northeastern Kharkiv region.

The head of the Kharkiv regional state administration, Oleg Synegubov, said the victims were an elderly couple, aged 81 and 83. Emergency services found their bodies under the rubble after their house was destroyed.

The latest attacks came as Witkoff on Tuesday wrapped up talks with Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky in Norway before heading to Russia on Wednesday to meet President Vladimir Putin.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio described the talks as "positive", after rising tensions between Kyiv and Washington in recent weeks over the course of the nearly five-year war.

Koretsky wrote on Telegram that Russian forces had struck energy infrastructure, railways, shopping centers and residential buildings "continuously" since Tuesday night.

Further strikes included one on a university building in the central city of Kremenchuk, and attacks on energy facilities in Kyiv, Volyn in the northwest, and Odesa and Mykolaiv in the south.

Koretsky also said a drone attacked a merchant vessel in the Black Sea.

Power company DTEK said emergency power outages were imposed on three parts of Kyiv alongside planned power cuts elsewhere in the city.

North Korea has moved new units into "firing positions", the powerful sister of leader Kim Jong Un said Wednesday, days after Pyongyang warned it was considering deploying additional strike means to its border with South Korea.

Tensions between Seoul and Pyongyang have soared since the South last month blamed an explosion inside the heavily fortified Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) separating the two countries on landmines laid by North Korea, an accusation it has rejected.

"Our military leadership underlined the need to make those rogues aware that our new firepower units have taken their firing positions," Kim Yo Jong said, according to state media.

Her statement came a day after Seoul warned of a "firm" response to further North Korean provocations.

She added that Kim Jong Un had "issued an order to fortify the border with an enemy state to be eternally impregnable".

The statement came as the Korea Central News Agency said the armed forces' Marshal Pak Jong Chon had inspected "pivotal positions" on the border, stressing to troops it was "time to organize the firepower strong enough to strike terror into the enemy's heart".

"If the enemy troops make a provocation actually threatening the safety of our service personnel... The border forces of the DPRK must take very proficient, specialized and overwhelming military action," he said, using the acronym for the North's official name.

Seoul's military accused Pyongyang on Tuesday of attempting to shift the blame for escalating military tensions, while confirming it had used both loudspeakers and warning shots as "legitimate defensive measures to prevent North Korean troops from crossing the MDL (Military Demarcation Line) and to drive back troops that have crossed it".

Jin Yong-sung, chairman of South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff, ordered the military to "respond with firm resolve" should North Korea use Seoul's actions as a pretext for aggressive action, while the defense ministry warned they would be met with "resolute" punishment.

North Korea has separately tested a slew of weapons recently, including a "new-type" precision-guided torpedo system and an intermediate-range hypersonic missile, both of which were said to employ AI technology.
