Iranian authorities have executed a man for killing a police officer who was run over by a vehicle during clashes four years ago, the judiciary said Sunday.

The country has ramped up executions since the outbreak of the Middle East war in February and since anti-government protests erupted late last year, said AFP.

"The death sentence for the killer of Reza Ehterami, a police officer serving in Iran's police emergency unit, has been carried out," the judiciary's Mizan Online website cited local prosecutor Aref Akbari as saying.

The execution went ahead after an investigation and trial, with the Supreme Court upholding the verdict, Akbari said.

The defendant, known in court as "Danial", was convicted of intentionally killing Ehterami, a third lieutenant serving with law enforcement in the southern city of Bandar Abbas.

Ehterami was killed in 2022 during clashes between police and fuel smugglers. He was run over by a vehicle driven by the defendant, according to previous reports from state media.

According to Amnesty International, Iran carries out more executions annually than any other country worldwide.

It imposes capital punishment for a range of offences, including murder.

Fuel prices in oil-rich Iran remain among the lowest in the world, encouraging widespread smuggling to neighboring countries.

At least 109 migrants were killed, including 15 children, and some 116 were missing after a boat sank off the shores of Djibouti overnight on October 8-9, a UN agency said Sunday.

Survivors said the vessel -- which was carrying 350 people from Djibouti to Yemen -- capsized north of the Djibouti town of Obock, according to a statement from the International Organization for Migration (IOM), whose teams are on the ground alongside local authorities to provide emergency aid.

Pakistan's president suspended the government in a province ruled by the party of jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan after declaring a state of emergency on Sunday, his office said, stripping its elected administration of its powers.

The decision comes amid a confrontation between Prime Minister ‌Shehbaz Sharif's ‌government and Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) ‌party, which governs northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

Khan's party has been rallying for several days to pressure the government for his release, threatening to march on the capital Islamabad in coming days.

President Asif Ali Zardari signed Sharif's advice to declare a state of emergency following ‌a federal cabinet ‌decision, his office said in a statement.

The advice ‌said the provincial government had failed ‌to fight extremist militancy, according to a statement from Sharif's office.

The constitution allows the federal government to take over some or all provincial government ‌functions during an emergency, but the president's office did not specify how the province would be administered.

Zulfikar Bukhari, a close Khan aide and PTI spokesman, called it a "ridiculous decision", saying Khyber Pakhtunkhwa had the country's "only legitimately elected government".

"This will only lead to further bloodshed, instability and collateral damage," he said, adding that there had always been room for talks but the decision showed negotiations were never the government's intention.
